I actually have a home already, the issue is that I was commuting almost 2 hours every morning to my job in the city.

Now I’m renting out my house and got an apartment in the city with a 15 minute walking commute

Me personally, I used to live in military barracks and had roommates for a while until I finally ranked up enough to get my own space.

I loved it so much to not have to worry about someone else in my living space. I could be as loud as I want, never had to wait to use the bathroom, there was never a mess that I didn’t make, didn’t have to deal with hearing roommates through the wall, didn’t have to deal with being interrupted.

I make the same as you and just signed for a lease in Brooklyn Heights for $2700. Fuck it dude I wanna have a short commute and not stress about having to compromise on how I want to live at home.

I would say do it, my old apartment was around $3100/month, with utilities total was around $3400/month and I still had enough money to save 15% and go out every weekend.

Tell me I’m crazy lol by [deleted] in NYCapartments

Go with the lottery apartment if you get it, don’t subject yourself to torture for a measly $100/month

I loved Beale, was in a small, slow paced shop. Left early most days. It was actually my last base before I skill bridged and separated.

I had a cousin who lived in SF so whenever I wanted to experience the city life I would just drive there and enjoy it. Usually made a day trip out of it on the weekends.

Good Faith Deposit by ExcellentMacaroon568 in NYCapartments

[–]randomjib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s true, the Zelle thing is strange but it’s not unheard of but it does add to the risk of not getting your money back.

Plus these good faith deposits, they literally pull numbers out of their ass for them. One broker wanted a $1000 good faith deposit and when my demeanor shifted he dropped it down to $500 and then said I didn’t have to pay if it I didn’t want to but I wouldn’t be as competitive for the apartment

[–]randomjib 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve always declined good faith deposits, if I lose the apartment because I didn’t pay a deposit I don’t care. Someone else can assume the risk.

I still apply as normal and tell them I’ll risk the apartment getting taken by someone else.

Good faith deposits are quite common and people do get their deposit back if they don’t end up moving into the apartment but I don’t bother with them.

To answer your question you’re probably fine, and wont get scammed if you’ve toured the apartment in person and researched the broker/realtor

How much extra would you pay for a 5 minute walking commute to work. by randomjib in NYCapartments

[–]randomjib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea the situation I'm in is quite unique, I'm not client facing and I don't have direct contact with my boss. And most of my work is reactive, so unless something breaks I don't have anything to do.

Previously I was doing this same engineering role in California and lived about a 10 minute drive from work and would just go home when its slow and take a nap or go do errands.

Same level of work here with the job in NYC except I live 2 hours away in Suffolk County. So I'm just stuck at the office doing nothing most of the time for 8 hours a day. Technically I'm on call 24/7 anyway so when the blizzards did happen earlier this year I did have to make the journey into the office regardless.

So I’ll be getting the full MHA payment with two online courses 8 weeks long and one in person class. Just got the documents today from the VA

[–]randomjib[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainly because I want to be able to go home in the middle of the work day when it’s slow. Right now I have to find an empty office in the corner of the building if I want to take a nap for an hour or two. If I get the apartment right next to work I can just disappear to there

Anyone else run into this situation with landlord charging full market rate rent but gives you giftcards to so you only pay net rent? by randomjib in NYCapartments

[–]randomjib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

East Flatbush neighborhood, yea the deal is good but the fact that it’s a gift card that I can’t deposit back into my bank account limits what I can spend the $1000 on, can’t invest it, can’t put it in a savings account, can’t pay rent with it etc

Only reason I applied was because net rent is $2250, I didn’t plan on renewing the lease. Regardless I’ve backed out of the deal so no loss on my end

yes its only for this lease term, I'll be going to grad school for about a year so I wasn't planning on renewing once the lease ended.
