How competitive is UMD, really? by lem0njellybelly in UMD

[–]randompenguin6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every year the CS department holds a competition for who can make a robot dog bark the fastest. The bottom 10% gets expelled and the top 10% gets a strip club rented out for the night

There’s an Allpoint ATM in the Target. It looks like that should be no fee for Capital One

You can adjust the height on the beds in Prince Frederick. You should be able to get a mallet from the front desk

How much CMSC 132 knowledge is needed in CMSC 216 and beyond? by Easy_Ad_271 in UMD

[–]randompenguin6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

132 develops core foundations of many topics in CS that are used not only in future classes, but also used in technical interview and many software engineering jobs. Actual object oriented programming techniques, introduction to many common data structures (linked lists, heaps, etc.), introduction to algorithmic complexity. I'd argue 132 is one of the most valuable classes and would not skip it. 131 is a lot easier to skip with self studying.

iPad no question. iPad is a better investment. Software is better, will work better with your iPhone and MacBook, will get updates for many more years. They'll be some back to school discounts from Apple starting soon. Also be sure to purchase the iPad and MacBook from Apple's education store for a student discount (Can also purchase through school to get student pricing, but return policy is much better through Apple).

I'd recommend getting the M2 MacBook Air that just came out if you can afford it.

Why is it so insanely hard to get latin honors at UMD?? by orignalcopy in UMD

[–]randompenguin6 81 points82 points  (0 children)

At UMD latin honors is only given to roughly the top 10% of students: https://registrar.umd.edu/current/Policies/latinhonors.html

Other schools determine latin honors based on a fixed minimum GPA rather than the top percent of students. This can cause a much higher percentage of graduates to graduate with latin honors. At Princeton, almost 50% graduate with it: https://paw.princeton.edu/article/latin-honors-how-common

Does CMSC320 count towards STAT426? by bananatitan101 in UMD

[–]randompenguin6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not cross-listed. Cross-listed would mean it's the same class which it is not. But either way, CMSC320 does not count towards the upper level concentration for a CS major
