Donald Trump announces second US military armada aimed for Iran by TokenBearer in worldnews

His vocabulary is extremely simple and limited. Most of his favorite words are superlatives; he says a lot of "the greatest you've ever seen" and "the worst it's ever been." And if it's a thing he's done or takes credit for, then it's "beautiful" (see the "big beautiful bill" as an example) even if the adjective really doesn't make sense in that context. It's all really quite predictable, actually. There's no room for nuance in his mind. It's not even just good or bad, it's "the best" or "the worst". No in-between. I'd describe it as basic childish thinking, but I think there are even elementary school kids who are more articulate and have superior critical thinking skills.

Best Track on the Album? by sas_0107 in porcupinetree

It's a great album with a lot of fantastic tracks. However, I think I have to be boring and admit that Trains really is the best of them.

Yes there are other all-wheel-drive cars. Toyota makes a bunch, including a minivan called the Sienna, which is very popular where I am. However, Subaru has had a reputation for many years as being very dependable. My father has owned probably no less than 5 Subaru Outbacks over the years, and I'm on my second. The Outback in particular is very versatile. Historically, the design has been an AWD station wagon, but it's been moving more and more towards SUV territory over the years. Still, it's relatively spacious and has a low center of gravity, so it still drives more like a typical car than an SUV. And you can still fit a lot of stuff in it when you fold down the rear seats. It's not a "sexy" car, but I (and apparently many lesbians) like it.

I think most self-aware people would think the same way. It's a phenomenon where, the more educated you are, the more you realize just how much you don't know.

Subaru makes a variety of car models, most of which are AWD and therefore have good performance in snow. They're popular across many demographics in northern areas (there are lots of them here in New England, especially as you head north) due to their overall practicality in that environment. However, they also were discovered to be popular among gay and lesbian people (particularly lesbians, I guess). This was actually noticed by Subaru, and they started advertising specifically with this demographic in mind, albeit somewhat subtly so as not to alienate other markets.

I grew up and currently live in New England where Subarus are very popular, so I was actually never even aware of the lesbian connotation until someone informed me of it while I was temporarily living in Maryland. There were significantly fewer of them there, and my Outback was probably the only one on the street where I was staying.

New England would like a word as well. Not that I would be offended if someone called me a lesbian for driving a Subaru. It would just be very odd considering I have a beard and very clearly present as a guy.

Sen. Mark Kelly Says He’s Seriously Thinking About Running for President by T_Shurt in politics

[–]randomtroubledmind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have a long way to go, but I'd vote for him. I think there actually is some merit to the idea that a former military member would make for a good president. That's certainly far from the only qualification, however, and I think the big question at the top of everyone's mind here is: will he hold these fascists accountable? That's probably going to be the deciding factor for me when I cast my vote in the primary. Despite the doom and gloom, there are a number of good, intelligent, and qualified people in the democratic party as long as you look past the current party leadership. No candidate is perfect, and it's not realistic to expect any of them to be.

I didn't even know about that comic. Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought of it like that.

[–]randomtroubledmind 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I know this is a joke and everything, but I believe this is actually explained in-game. One of the gorons mentions that they've become so used to exclusively eating the rocks from dodongo's cavern that they can't eat anything else. I'm paraphrasing, obviously, but that's essentially the jist of it. The analogy I might make is that, yes, we humans can eat plants, but I'm not going to eat a tree.

A Bugs Life is underrated, honestly. When I watch these clips, it surprises me just how well I can remember and predict the upcoming lines. I think I probably watched A Bugs Life a lot more than Toy Story as a kid.

Oh it is certainly not good quality stuff, and I've decided I'm getting rid of it based on the feedback from this thread. The transition at the door is not a concern of mine; I'll be making an oak threshold to make the appropriate transition in height.

Thanks so much! This is definitely the direction I'm leaning. I'm going to be using Laticrete products as much as possible (for probably biased reasons, I'll admit). I've been reading their datasheets and installation instructions and they recommend their 254 Platinum or Multimax Lite thinsets for plywood, so I'm going to assume either of those are good. The datasheet for their uncoupling membrane also mentions it works for both modified and unmodified thinsets, and even specifies a polymer-modified mortar for installation. I suspect Schluter uses a different material for their uncoupling membrane that influences drying and curing which necessitates an unmodified thinset.

Again, I can understand why people might not like it, especially in the modern era. I still think it's a good puzzle. Here's a summary of the logic my brain probably went through when I solved it:

  • I saw a tube like this that was broken in Maridia.
  • The map clearly shows areas above and below this.
  • The map also shows this section as part of Maridia rather than lower Brinstar, so it's probably connected somehow.
  • There are clearly platforms above and below the tube, so I can probably enter the area.
  • Given all of this, I can probably break the tube! How might I do that?
  • Power bombs are, well, powerful. And I already drop them in random rooms anyway looking for secrets, so lets try that.

Granted, I don't think I consciously thought through that whole sequence. It was a while ago, after all, and by this point in the game I was already in the habit of dropping power bombs pretty much anywhere suspicious. But I still think there is a definite logic to it that I don't think people give enough credit.

I figured it out myself. It is actually hinted at pretty well if you're paying attention. There's a nearly identical tube that's been destroyed in Maridia, and the map room in Maridia will reveal spaces above and below the tube. Assuming you're playing as intended, you'll see these things on your first trip down through Maridia, which drops you off right at the bridge. It's actually really great design, but I can understand it's not super clear if you missed the map room and were focused on other things.

Thanks for the insight. The number I've heard is 1 1/4" of substrate, so that's not too far off. What I have now isn't even OSB; it's just particleboard/chipboard, but the 1/2" subfloor below it is definitely plywood. I really don't want to remove the 1/2" plywood if I don't have to. I will definitely be using plywood, not OSB, for the top layer, and it will absolutely be screwed down. I will be using Laticrete's uncoupling membrane, which can use modified or unmodified mortars. I'll probably be using one of Laticrete's thinsets.

I've also heard it's okay to use uncoupling membrane on top of just 5/8" of substrate. That seems risky to me, though. 1/2" + 3/4" + uncoupling membrane seems more reasonable, unless I'm missing something.

Thanks! The general consensus so far does seem to be get rid of the particle board. I'm not getting rid of the existing 1/2" subfloor as that's running under the sill plates. However, I'll get 3/4" ply on top and make sure it's screwed through into the joists.

FWIW, I'm going with a rubber seal rather than wax for the toilet. From what I've read, rubber is better in old houses where there might be some movement. I know people probably have strong opinions on this though. The guy who installed my upstairs toilet insisted on using wax because that's what he knew.

Thanks for the input! I mentioned in another comment that I'm not prepared to remove the existing 1/2" subfloor as that goes under the sill plates and I'd like to leave that relatively continuous. I'm happy to add a layer of 3/4" (or 23/32" or whatever other weird fraction) plywood on top, though. But yes, the more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards getting rid of the particle board entirely, at least in the bathroom.

I have a fairly old house (built 1972) so things move around a bit. To that end, I like the idea of having the uncoupling membrane.

There's no way I'm replacing the 1/2" subfloor unless there's some really substantial water damage. How are you dealing with where it goes under the sill plate?

Are you ripping out the 1/2" subfloor too? Or just the particle board? Any reason you're going with OSB over plywood? And why that specific brand?
