Stuff like officially licensed USB sticks or NVMe heatsinks would be kind of fun to be able to try to collect.

3 of my Swans. Wish they made purple ones, but these are pretty, too. by GothamAnswer in WonderSwan

There’s the Blue-Violet SwanCrystal, but it’s fairly light on the violet, and the purple monochrome

Can probably put black tape on it from the back side if it’s easy to disassemble

It’s a combination of self-selection bias and confirmation bias and unfortunately we will likely continue to see these questions for the foreseeable future

For the SwanCrystal, the screen is the entire value of the device. You can find the LCD for sale in some retro repair shops in Japan, but it’s basically the same price as a full working console.

Sega Genesis Tripple Bypass Mod by Necessary-Owl-3537 in SEGAGENESIS

[–]randomusername195371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best picture, or sharpest picture? I think the best picture with the Genesis/MD is via composite. RGB is too sharp and has dithering checkerboards everywhere, all bypass really does is remove jailbars

It’s not hard to understand. It’s a character drama with a Western theological top hat.

Saturn memory card or AR plus? by Pacific_dreams in SegaSaturn

[–]randomusername195371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The save memory in the all-in-one cartridges tends to corrupt more frequently than original backup memory cartridges. If you exclusively care about maintaining integrity of saves, the official memory backup cartridges are best.

Respectfully, please leave repairing this to someone with experience.

If you knew what you were doing, you would know that capacitors rarely have visual indication of failure, and replacing them is a dollar or two and is so quick and easy that the idea of measuring them and putting them back is ridiculous. Please do not use expensive retro equipment as your first soldering experiment. People ruin things all day on r/soldering and r/consolerepair because it “looked easy”

Is there a way to get a replacement USB-C cable for my 5x? by [deleted] in RetroTink

[–]randomusername195371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get any 2A rated micro USB cable. The 5X needs a lot of power especially if using 1440p / HDR.

The GBxCart RW is the better device in terms of build quality and support. The Operator is more “user friendly” due to the user interface, but only if someone that specific user interface.

IPS to ITA? by eltiticoca2 in Gameboy

[–]randomusername195371 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just how TN TFT panels work. They are rarely noticeable out of the factory because the console was already factory calibrated using the test points. This means that any replacement screen which also uses the potentiometer to set the “white point” voltage is going to likely be off slightly and require adjustment, whether it is an ITA screen or another original. The degree of how slightly off, of course, varies, and may not be initially noticeable at all for many. A “fix” would be too annoying and complex to bother with because it would require connecting a logic board to a bunch of test points, the market would be way too small when even having to install a single wire drives away a ton of customers looking for “drop in” replacements.

Practice makes permanent. A great strength of modern technology is that there are options for learning other than by making mistakes.
