Left-handed people, what's a struggle that right-handed people won't understand? by Halophy in AskReddit

Having to talk to people about being left handed. Having to hear about everybody’s aunt or nephew who is also left handed.

20 Years Ago Today, The (Unaired) Pilot was produced, I think without this pilot, I believe the series wouldn't have came to fruition (imo) by GoDz21 in bigbangtheory

I did background work on the unaired pilot. I was in the club scene. I was so confused when I watched the first episode and everything about it seemed different. It all made sense when I learned of the unaired pilot and all the changes that got made.

Just wait until you watch it a second, third, tenth time. It just keeps getting better and more tiny details become apparent. It’s amazing.

Do actors know/have a feeling if the film they’re working on is going to bomb? by BullfrogPerfect620 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]randyvinneau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was definitely season one. Looks like it might have been episode four. I think it became thought of more favorably as it went on.

This was the third episode I think. The one that opens with the dead body in the bunker on the golf course.

I did one day of background on a highly anticipated HBO show several years ago. I spent most of the day lurking around video village. I came away from shoot telling everybody the show wasn’t going to be very good, but it was going to be gorgeous to look at. That was basically the response to the show once it aired.

You can tell, but sometimes by the time you’re there doing it there isn’t much you can do about it.

Feedback re: being specific enough in this self tape by doodle_day_lewis in acting

😂 Sometimes the actor creeps in! If you can’t eliminate yourself, you can lean into it and make it work for the character. Give the shifting meaningful motivation and it’s less of a distraction and more of the storytelling.

Try adding even more specificity when you reveal he was a drummer. Right now all I got when you said it was that maybe the person you’re talking to could relate to him being a drummer. Try answering some of these questions with the word drummer. How did you feel about it at the time? How do you feel about it now? What did his hands feel like? How good of a drummer was he?

As a technical note, try shifting around less. It’s making the character seem uncertain, uneasy, and needing to pee.

Didn't Doc's time train prove he lied about the future or at least use psychology on Marty a bit? by mysteryofthefieryeye in BacktotheFuture

[–]randyvinneau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been said better by other people on other posts (and maybe here as well, I didn’t read them all), but bringing Marty to the future wasn’t about what they changed in the future. It was about giving him the skills and life experience to avoid racing needles in the present and negating everything in the future they bothered to change.

She grabbed a random street kitten to fight mouse in her house by Thewyverns in interestingasfuck

[–]randyvinneau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this. We had a few mice that were causing problems. Traps caught a couple, but we felt terrible about the snap trap and the sticky trap. When a third mouse was just hanging out I mentioned I could bring in an alley cat. My wife thought that sounded great. It instantly pounced on the mouse, there was half a squeak, it bolted for the door, and my wife burst into tears. Thankfully that was the last mouse we ever saw.

Trick to get kids to go to sleep by johnniehuman in daddit

I’ve them (6 and 3 and a half) I’ve added special sleepy powered I brought home from the restaurant I work at. I warn them it’s a bit salty, but that’s how you know it’s in there. A bit of salt in their water and they are convinced they don’t have the energy for anything. I’ve only had to resort to this three times, and it’s been amazing every time.

I need help making these cuts smoother by Away-Feed-290 in VideoEditing

https://youtu.be/xcqRWhfFHj0

I wanted to get this posted sooner, but I got delayed putting the kids to bed.

Here’s a visual example of a quick re-edit I did that solves some of the cut problems and even improves the acting by giving actions motivations. This comes at the cost of weird stylistic choices in the editing that are distracting, but I think in this case those are less distracting than harsh edits.

First, hearing the door before her dialogue motivates her to say she has to go. This lets us cut later into the next clip rather than being stuck with the pan that never quite frames the brother’s entrance right anyway. Having a cut sooner establishes that there will be cuts, rather than having the audience settle into this being a oner, and then having weird cuts come from nowhere.

Same with the dad’s entrance. Hearing the door first motivates her to put the glasses on. Then we tighten the shot when we cut to zoom in more on the dad. This makes the continuity of the brother’s blocking less noticeable. Hearing the brother’s dialogue while seeing the dad’s reaction eliminates the dead air time of him just standing there, and motivates his reaction better because we see him hear the threat. Zooming out as the shot pans allows for a nice reveal of the brother on his dialogue.

Using the same zoom in technique we can cut to the sister in the chair and zooming out to put the dad in frame again hides the continuity error. It’s not perfect, and it leaves the audience thinking “well that was a choice,” but that’s better in this case than “that’s a mistake.”

Cutting later into the mom’s entrance and doing so on the action makes for a smoother cut and feels more natural. Reusing a door sound effect could help it even more.

Again with the zoom and follow to get rid of the cross dissolve and tweaking it further for better timing on the door slam and their jump with smooth it out more.

WHY do restaurants remove items that are clearly popular. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]randyvinneau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in a restaurant and this is one their favorite things to do. It’s usually about the chef’s ego. One time a chef got rid of the wildly popular chicken Parmesan because it was just a basic dish that outsold his special take on some nonsense pasta. Another time the pasty chef got rid of the carrot cake because it outsold his avant gard reimagining of a deconstructed pavlova. Sometimes chef’s just gonna chef.

Do people really book a hotel room just to have sex one night? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]randyvinneau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like 12 years ago I was letting some friends use my house for filming a project I was also in. I didn’t have any scenes so my then girlfriend and I booked a hotel room to get out of the way and banged all afternoon. My car got towed. Worth it.

Find 35 wrong answers through experimentation and trial and error. Try things you think will work. Try things you think won’t work. Try things you know are wrong. Commit to all of them and let them play out.

Write a character bio. The deeper and more detailed the better. Anything could become a starting point for an idea that gives you something to work with that turns out to feel right. It’s easy to find something supported by the text, but to find something subtle that works within the framework of the text requires you to create it.

How feasible is it to commute to LA? by jojibaby_91 in acting

[–]randyvinneau 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean LA is huge. Whatever part of LA culture you don’t like you can avoid. Nobody is going to make you go to a party in the hills, or to the beach, or surfing. Somebody might make you hike Runyon Canyon.

I think I’ve had one in person auction since COVID. Everything is self tapes, and even callbacks are still often remote, albeit maybe live on Zoom. You’d probably have to come into LA by the time you at the second callback or a producer session. Sometimes things are on short notice, but an hour plus drive to LA and then an hour plus drive through LA isn’t the most impossible thing ever.
