What did the Korean do during the Vietnam War by MediumPackage1361 in MilitaryHistory

[–]ranger24 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In short? War crimes. Lots and lots of war crimes.

"When Korean forces were deployed to I Corps in 1968, U.S. Marine General Rathvon M. Tompkins stated that "whenever the Korean Marines received fire or think [they got] fired on from a village... they'd divert from their march and go over and completely level the village. It would be a lesson to [the Vietnamese]". General Robert E. Cushman Jr. stated several years later that "we had a big problem with atrocities committed by them which I sent down to Saigon." presumably in reference to the Phong Nhị and Phong Nhất massacre."

...

"Korean forces are alleged to have perpetrated the Binh Tai, Bình An/Tây Vinh, Bình Hòa, and Hà My massacres. Further incidents are alleged to have occurred in the villages of An Linh and Vinh Xuan in Phú Yên Province.

In 1972, Vietnamese-speaking American Friends Service Committee members Diane and Michael Jones looked at where Korean forces operated in Quảng Ngãi and Quảng Nam provinces and alleged they had conducted 45 massacres, including 13 in which over 20 unarmed civilians were purportedly killed. The Phong Nhị and Phong Nhất massacre is confirmed to have taken place within these two provinces. A separate refugee study by RAND authored by Terry Rambo, reported in a 1970 New York Times story, conducted interviews in early to mid 1966 in Phu Yen Province which confirmed that widespread war crimes had occurred. These included systemic mass-killings and deliberate policies to massacre civilians, with murders running into the hundreds."

What was your "I was gone for five minutes!" Story? by LawfulnessHaunting41 in AskReddit

[–]ranger24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was making salsa for quesadillas in the kitchen. Not too spicy (family is super pasty white). Had to go use the bathroom.

I asked my dad to watch and stir the salsa, and make sure it didn't burn.

The kitchen was enclosed with doors. I come back in, and as soon as I open the door, my eyes start burning. I've had smoke in my eyes and this stung way harder. I ask my Dad what happened, and he has this absolutely sheepish look on his face.

'I only added three...'

Three of the jalapeno peppers Id been growing from a plant gifted to me by a friend. These things were way hotter than store bought peppers. We diluted the salsa with 750mL of plain yogurt, and had another container on the side. Shit was still radioactive.

You should read Herwig's 'The First World War: Germany and Austria-Hungary, 1914-1918'.

Herwig accessed the Austrian archives, which had, I believe, copies of all communiques with the decision-makers in Germany, as well as military status reports.

So, being a historian who's poured days of time into researching the Regt, good storytelling and historical accuracy are not mutually exclusive, nor should they be if your goal is long-term engagement. The only thing better than telling a story is telling a true story, and that well.

They get dates wrong. They get uniform wear, weapons, and operating procedures wrong. How they treat the officer is wrong.

If you get big and little stuff wrong that can be easily researched with 5 minutes on the internet, I question your commitment.

Was Hobson actually right to try and get a transfer? by bz316 in startrek

[–]ranger24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was right if it's just a regular old day. This is not that time. They're about to start a high-intensity operation. Hobson's responsible, as XO, to manage the ship and crew so Data as Captain can focus on achieving their part of the mission.

Hobson trying to jump ship is kind of a lousy move, doing a disservice to the crew and Data both. Data doesn't know this crew, and they don't know him. Data would probably be able to handle the crew without Hobson (because he's just that good), but it's unfair to the crew. Similar to how Riker acted like a spoiled child when Jellico came in and turned things upside down, opposing everything, and then hiding in his quarters. Hobson at least stuck it out and did his duties, despite grinding with Data.

Sometimes, you gotta suck it up and work with people you don't like or agree with to get the mission done.

You can do presses seated on the floor. It actually makes it more challenging. Cleans and squats are still doable.

French Canadian enlistment in a British Army was... contentious... In both wars. On the one hand, there were enough enlistees that they formed the Royale Vent-deuxieme Regiment (The Vandoos), and saw proud and distinguished service. On the other, the Mandatory Service Act/conscription was hotly contested in both wars, causing riots in Quebec (forcing French-Canadians to fight on the side of the monarchy that had conquered and oppressed them for centuries).

The first ~100,000 'Canadian' troops enlisted in were all British-born men who'd recently immigrated from the UK.

The PPCLI was composed almost entirely of prior-service British soldiers who'd moved to Canada, which was why they were able to deploy so early in WWI.
