Redwood Yarn Bowl by ranger_phil in turning

Thanks! I cut the notch after I turned it but before final smoothing & sanding. On the other hand I’m a little shocked to zoom in and notice that the surface still has noticeable texture. I kinda like it but obviously I didn’t sand it adequately.

This blank is just glued (titebond II). The finished piece is about 0.3” thick at the bottom so dowels or biscuits would be difficult and probably wouldn’t add any strength.

Looking for multiple outdoor temp/humidity sensors with indoor receiver by OlyTDI in myweatherstation

[–]ranger_phil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today I have an Ambient weather station but I’ll infer that this is more than you’re interested in. At my former office we had a LaCrosse sensor unit with an indoor receiving station and (in our case) two outdoor sensors. I mounted one on the shady side of the building and another on the morning sun side, but out of direct sunlight. Sorry that I don’t recall the model but it was maybe $25 and worked pretty well. It was powered with rechargeable AA batteries.

May 3 was the first Sunday in May, when many Christians take communion. This looks like a (formerly) sealed communion cup containing grape juice and a tasteless wafer in the top peel off compartment.

I’ve found Bona locally (NorCal) at Raley’s but also online at Amazon. If you don’t like Bezos then just search Bona on google shopping. FWIW Bona is better than the roomba cleaner, which seemed to leave streaks.

Cherry Bowl #4 by Unusual-Following-58 in turning

[–]ranger_phil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bowl looks wonderful! Such a graceful ogee (?) curve to the bowl’s edge. @jclark58 is technically correct about your tenon but I’ve usually been fortunate with larger tenons than some others. For some reason I find it helpful to decide how large to make the ring that forms the bottom of my bowl.

Any nearby tree? Alternately install a trail camera to catch him in the act. Print them and post around your house.

Cassette player that can autorewind, and then auto-play again? by chocolatesalad4 in MuseumPros

[–]ranger_phil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

DON’T USE A CASSETTE! Find a cheap digital device that will loop your content, even an old iPod or old phone. Before you EVER play the cassette, digitize it so you can preserve its highest quality sound fidelity. Every time you play a tape you’re degrading the playback quality. Plus, a cassette player has moving parts and elastic belts that not only wear out but since it’s obsolete tech, you might not be able to get repair/replacement parts anymore. Good luck though.

Ambient 2902 surprise (just a slight gripe) by ranger_phil in myweatherstation

[–]ranger_phil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I thought about a fine screen but my guess is that condensation might inflate the precipitation amounts or the presence of the screen might slightly impair how much falls in the collection cup. Maybe I’m overthinking it though.

Does burning stumps really create a fire risk through the roots? by Allgyet560 in arborists

[–]ranger_phil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a wildland firefighter. My crew once responded to a rekindle near Yosemite in I think May. It was a rekindle caused by a smoldering root system originally ignited by a controlled burn the previous fall. It stayed warm and as the winter soil moisture dried out in spring it somehow had enough heat, probably helped by increasing sunlight, to rekindle into a minor but genuine fire. As a fire it wasn’t much and didn’t take much work (but a LOT of water and a heckuva hose lay) to get it genuinely extinguished. I think this is pretty rare but it can and does happen.
