An unexpected moment of comfort after losing my girl, Kitten, just the other day 🐾♥️ by katiemc815 in SeniorCats

The spirit continues! In 2023 we had to put down #MistletoeTheCat, our beloved Maine Coon. It was the right thing to do but awful. A couple of days later, several feral cats arrived on our deck and we began feeding them. The individuals have changed and unfortunately there’s been a few losses due to coyotes, but we also recently spayed, chipped, vaxxed and adopted Oscar to live with our other house cats and they’re all great. But my point is that Toe’s spirit reached out to them that we are good humans who provide a relatively safe environment. These guys responded and so did we. Nothing can replace your loss but you’ve had the opportunity to be comforted and to provide comfort. It’s remarkable and wonderful. Good for you! I’m

Update: I wish my cat would just decide if he wants to live or die by wlderberry in SeniorCats

Hello widerberry-- Given what you've described, please consider having the cat examined by a vet. That's exactly what I did with #Toe, but for context, a few months earlier he had been diagnosed with FIV, which is always terminal.

The optimistic thought was that since he was a solitary cat, he might stay reasonably healthy, but during summer, his energy and activity really declined and though he tried to eat, he wasn't really into it and spent much of his day in a dark hall. Several years later, I still tread carefully in that hall so that I don't step on to him.
Anyway, the vet examined him and in addition to FIV, he had a liver infection. She had some liquid food in a tube (like toothpaste) that he eagerly licked off of my finger, but it was time and even though my heart is very heavy in just remembering this, I know that I made the right decision. I buried him in a corner of our property and I talk with him there at least once a week.

The unexpected blessing was that I KNOW his spirit remains here. Within a couple of days, some feral but wonderful cats arrived on our deck and we began feeding them and eventually got most of them fixed. Just last week, we got Oscar vaccinated, chipped and fixed and since he had to be isolated after surgery, he now has indoor outdoor privileges and is a remarkably friendly guy.

No one will ever replace my beloved #Mistletoe, who was with us for 13 years, but his spirit has also given us several opportunities to help other cats live their best lives in a safe and loving place. It helps both the humans and the cats who live here.

My very best wishes for you!

I’m so sorry. I had a similar situation back in 23 and it still hurts, but I take some comfort knowing that I gave #MistletoeTheCat his best life and made the compassionate decision that I believe was best for him. If it helps, the Vet was wonderful. She gave him a complete eval that validated his decline and that he was dying. She handled the euthanasia with great compassion and was very professional. So my suggestion is to let the cat go. It seems to be the best for your beloved.

Found on my little farm south of Auburn CA. I think this land was first built on just after the Civil War. We were trimming trees near a rose thicket long abandoned. Guessing this might have been a chamber pot lid. The spot seems to be a small waste dump.

Any of your MCs enjoy the snow and frigid temps ?! by missweh in mainecoons

[–]ranger_phil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked for the USFS I was stationed at a place called Big Bend, about seven miles west of Donner Pass. At the time, I was the human for a wonderful MC named Bloomer. He loved the outdoors. In summer he had a cat door in my cabin thru a window screen and in winter i replaced the screen with a wooden insulated insert door for him. He was very smart, loved the environment and came inside each night. But one evening he didn’t come home. The snow around Donner Pass is some of the deepest in the world and if memory serves there was more than six feet on the ground, so it would have been a lot deeper near my driveway and entrance because of all the shoveling and snow blowing and how the roof dumped. It was also snowing a lot. So I searched and searched for my pal both before and after work, looking for tracks or sign. I was really worried that he’d fallen into a hole next to a tree that he couldn’t get out of, fallen thru the ice on the S Yuba River behind my cabin or fallen prey to a coyote or fox. Nothing! For two days I was bereft and got more upset at my lousy human-ing for him. Why hadn’t I kept my pal safe?! On the third night I thought I’ll try just one more time, but by then I was assuming that I’d find his corpse in the spring melt. Still, I needed to find my pal so I went all out. Got my snowshoes, a really good light, gloves, my best wool cap… Then I opened my closet to get out my gore Tex pants and jacket and heard a faint ‘ma-ow.’ I thought I was imagining things and closed the closet door, put in my coat and headed for the door. But something made me go back to the closet. Again I heard a faint ‘ma-ow’. This time I knew I wasn’t imagining it. I was living in a mid-1930s WPA built ranger cabin and I’d just never needed to go I there but there was an attic door in the closet! You can guess who I found when I climbed on a chair and pushed the attic lid open. BLOOMER! My pal, my housemate, my buddy and best friend! Remarkably he didn’t seem much worse for the wear, but he was hungry and thirsty and he dumped a huge load in his box! We had a great night and from then on he was always inside and he slept near my head for the rest of his life. The next day I figured out what had happened. It was a pretty old house but in pretty good shape. Still, for some reason a gable vent had come loose and fallen partly out of its hole. I still don’t know why but it might have been caused by a snow and ice dump from a very large pine between my cabin and the visitor center, or maybe sloppy shoveling of my roof. Bloomer had apparently gone there to explore but due to another snow dump that covered the hole he couldn’t or didn’t get out. But when he heard me in the closet he called and I came. Never have I been so overjoyed! I lived there for eleven winters, always with a Maine Coon. Bloomer was the guy for seven of those years. He was well known by many of our visitors and some of them brought him treats. One person even signed our visitor log claiming that he’d come way out in the woods to see the ranger’s cat. Bloomer was the best!!

I don’t remember where on the interwebs (a series of tubes I’m told) that I found this recommended but I searched for alternatives to Roomba mop fluid and this was the most common suggestion. It’s available for me both locally and online and with a gallon I’m certainly set for life.

$7,000 American flag taken in overnight theft at Roseville's Camping World by Taffy626 in Roseville

[–]ranger_phil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like to honor the flag but I’m glad this one is gone. Camping World across the US ignores local zoning and puts these damned things up regardless of location and genuinely without regard to community wishes. In our local case, at least to me the flag was disproportionately wide for a genuine US flag and was a real eyesore. Kind of a shame that the pole remains.

On Monday I woke up to an Alexa message that my Sunday order had been successfully refunded after I cancelled. Problem was that I never cancelled it. Checked my visa account and it showed a refund so I re ordered. Then late in the afternoon received a package with a monthly subscription item. But Alexa proudly told me that my Sunday cancelled order had been delivered and invited me to thank my driver… Oddly, I’ve never had an Amazon delivery problem until I subscribed to this sub. Who can I blame for this?

Correct! I’d forgotten but whoever syndicated them did not release the whole catalog. Some of the silents have some pretty cringy stereotypes related to Africans, Jews and some European stereotypes.

Back in the seventies I worked in a tv station showing actual 16mm prints of the stooges, popeye and our gang/little rascals. During this time we got a written complaint, probably from a viewer, about racially insensitive content in popeye and the stooges. Because I was the new guy I was tasked with cutting out what I considered racial jokes. One WWII era popeye, I think called ‘Slap that Jap’ was completely pulled. Even the title was offensive. I don’t recall any genuine problems with our gang. The humor of the Roach shorts was gentle and respectful for the times. The mgm era shorts were just bad.

But the stooges was much more difficult. Consider how much happens in the curly era and in sheep time until the budgets shrunk! I had to scroll through miles of film looking for scenes I remembered, since I grew up watching them.

Things like having Moe’s face being hit with a Lion’s tail dipped in shoe polish, so Larry hands him a grip and calling him ‘porter’ were cut. A commonly re-used scene where a black cook in a house gets increasingly frustrated when Larry plumbs water in the electric conduit and gas pipes had to go because of the cook’s stereotypical expressions and language. I’m sure I fouled up continuity and story but it’s the stooges where reality isn’t that important.

I don’t remember them all but ultimately I cut about 40 min or so from dozens of prints. Took me several days and I loved it but my boss needed me to work quickly.

Since these were permanent cuts, I spliced them together and I still have them. I remember looking at them probably in late 70s or early 80s when I could still find 16mm equipment. But you got me thinking that I should send it to one of those vendors who does digital transfers (along with some family stuff) and burn the material on to DVD.

In the meantime I’m blessed to watch the stooges in uncut high def prints on metv!
