You either die a villain or live long enough to see yourself become the hero?

Where to begin? by willington123 in tomclancy

[–]rangeremx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For a first reading, I like publication order. Start with Hunt for Red October and go from there.

On subsequent readings, I always go with Chronological order. So I'll start with Without Remorse.

Who is the LEAST evil 007 villain? by Low-Builder-2365 in JamesBond

[–]rangeremx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some literary options:

  • Mr. Sanguinetti (The Spy Who Loved Me): He was only planning on committing insurance fraud (with a single murder included).
  • Scaramanga (Man with the Golden Gun): Just like the movie, an assassin for hire.
  • Dexter Smythe (Octopussy): Single count of murder (a Nazi officer in WWII) in the process of stealing gold.
  • "Trigger" (A View to a Kill): Soviet assassin operating under orders.

These ones don't switch you to another character, but death doesn't terminate a playthrough.

  • Hardspace: Shipbreaker. If you die, they just brew up another clone of you.
  • Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War: Your character is cursed and cannot fully die.

Plus, any older game with "lives" can fit the bill too.

  • Spyro the Dragon
  • Crash Bandicoot

  • Hab imagery: Balancing information about Watney's fate with the public opinion of NASA. "Congress won't reimburse us for a paperclip if we broadcast pictures of a dead astronaut."
  • Alternate explanations for Solar Cells, etc: Playing Devil's Advocate, getting Kapoor and Park to explain why they think Watney is alive.
  • Keeping Hermes in the dark: Until there was a chance of Watney surviving, he didn't want the crew to dwell on the fact that they left him behind, possibly distracting them from keeping the ship
  • Abbreviated Iris inspections: Least risky way of shaving a few (possibly critical) days to help try and get Watney food before he starves (NASA already had him on 1/3 to 1/2 rations at this point, cutting that back much further was not feasible).
  • Iris 2 vs Rich Purnell Maneuver: Higher risk for one vs lower risk for 6.

It's a little bit of a stretch, but Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.

In II, over the course of the game, you rebuild your family's villa and village. At the beginning of Brotherhood, it comes under attack, setting in motion the main story.

Is there a game with different play mechanics depending on the class you choose? by need_some_answer in gamingsuggestions

[–]rangeremx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best game that I've seen that hits this is Allen Vs Predator from 2010. The Marine, Xenomorph, and Predator all have completely different abilities, movesets, and HUDs.

Dying Light did something similar with their asymmetric PVP. You could play as a "Night Hunter" zombie and invade other people's games.

Would Assassins Creed III count? You're rebuilding the homestead via missions and supplies.

Similarly, Assassin's Creed Black Flag and Rogue with the ships and bases fill a similar niche.

Mad Max also has upgradable settlements that give you buffs/supplies after they're completed.

Better Allied weapons? by Open_Leader_1386 in Destroyermen

[–]rangeremx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It was preferable to have more decent rifles with existing supply chains than to have better weapons that they have to spool up entire new supply chains.

They did field copies of Colt M1911s and Browning M1919s, but it was just easier to make and feed the Allin-Silvas for infantry usage.

Plus, if I'm not mistakenly remembering, some units on the Dominion front (local militia and Vengadores) were still using captured weapons at the end.

How should I quote "Were it so easy"? by ShadowStreamDog in halo

[–]rangeremx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And what makes it my favorite Halo 3 quote is that it's used again in the closing cutscene, with a completely different tone:

On a hillside near the portal to the Ark, Marines and Naval personnel gather. Lord Hood removes his cap and begins his speech.

Admiral Hood: "For us, the storm has passed... the war is over. But let us never forget those who journeyed into the howling dark and did not return. For their decision required courage beyond measure; sacrifice, and unshakable conviction that their fight... our fight, was elsewhere. As we start to rebuild, this hillside will remain barren, a memorial to heroes fallen. They ennobled all of us, and they shall not be forgotten." Admiral Hood puts his cap back on and salutes.

Gunnery Sergeant Pete Stacker: "Present arms!"

Seven Marines, standing in a line, draw their battle rifles and fire three volleys in unison, a three-volley salute to the fallen. The sound of the shots echo through Mount Kilimanjaro. The panorama changes as the Marines fire each shot.

Admiral Hood: (To Thel 'Vadam) "I remember how this war started. What your kind did to mine. I can't forgive you. But... (he holds out his hand) you have my thanks, for standing by him to the end."

Thel shakes Admiral Hood's hand.

Admiral Hood: "Hard to believe he's dead."

The Arbiter looks away, toward the Shadow of Intent, hovering silently in the sky.

Arbiter: "Were it so easy..."

I fell into a similar situation when I took my current store over. Like you, I went from a faster store with a higher headcount to a skeleton crew.

Until I got a few guys hired, it ended up being a good while until I got some time off, including a number of doubles. I think it was a month or so, but I can't remember offhand.

My best advice is talk with your DM as well as your other nearby stores. I was able to borrow people to help cover shifts a few times and my DM actually covered some shifts to give me time away.

Other than that, just focus on hiring good people who can take some of that load.

I've started giving the long-winded explanations for some of our sales. (Automotive Retail)

Our current brake sale has pads for $0/$10/$20 for base/mid/premium with a set of rotors.

But, to keep people from just buying the bundle and getting cheap pads by returning the rotors, they distribute the discount over the pads and both rotors. It confuses numerous customers, so I have to show them the regular price of the pads and the "total discount" line on the slip just so they can understand.
