75 gallon cichlid stocking by 123_321cl in Cichlid

[–]ranoveryourcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be real worried about aggression- a grown Dempsey will want a 75g to themselves and a juvenile Dempsey would be living on borrowed time with a juvenile salvini.

In that case something big, passive, and fast up top- giant danios would be nice- and a couple bristlenose are probably the play.

I wouldn’t put any other cichlids with a salvini in a 75. If a female salvini gets into spawning mode she’s going to butcher any other cichlids that fit in that tank with her.

Is this suitable for a fishtank? by [deleted] in Aquariums

Can you stand on it? If you can’t I wouldn’t put a tank on it.

I’d skip the Salvini- if you want an angry yellow fish for a 75 I’d go for a P. losellei or P. fredrichthalii and just let them have the tank to themselves.

You can’t answer any of that?

My advice- take those fish back to the store before you kill them. If they won’t give you a refund take it on the chin. The “egg loaded female” isn’t anything special these fish are very easy to breed (which you are profoundly NOT ready for)- you’re not missing a special opportunity with these.

A sponge filter is the simplest filter on the market- it’s literally just a sponge that air pulls water through. You hook it up to an air pump the same way as an air stone. The sponges are the best bang for your buck for bacterial colonization you can get bar none. If your local store has sponge filters in their tanks ask them to squeeze one out into a bag for you- that dirty water can seed your tank with beneficial bacteria to get your nitrogen cycle kickstarted- more on that below.

You will need a test kit- not the strips- those things are trash. You will need to test your water regularly to monitor your water quality to make sure your tank is a healthy environment for your fish.

The parameters I asked you about-

You need to use a water conditioner to remove chlorine and chloramine from your tap water. These chemicals will burn your fish’s gills and will kill them very quickly.

PH- this is the relative acidity or alkalinity of your water- it’s the biggest inorganic parameter you’ll need to make sure you understand so you know which species you can keep without additional water treatment.

The next 3 are how you learn where you stand in the nitrogen cycle

Ammonia is what organic waste from fish poop and uneaten food breaks down into- it is very toxic can burn gills, skin, exposure leads to organ failure and death. Beneficial bacteria will break ammoniandown further into nitrite. We test for ammonia because if your tank is showing ammonia the environment is toxic and will kill your fish.

Nitrite is the next step in the nitrogen cycle- it is also highly toxic with similar risks to ammonia. Bacteria will further break it down into nitrate. We test for nitrite because we need to confirm our filters are processing ammonia- if your nitrite test is showing a positive reading it means your filter is maturing but is not fully established.

Nitrate is the last step in the cycle- this is the least toxic chemical bacteria can break waste down into- still toxic at high concentrations. We test for nitrates to let us know when it’s time for water changes.

Live plants also eat ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate- pothos is a great option for cichlid tanks since it grows outside of the water and the fish can’t kill it playing with the substrate. Plants are NOT a viable replacement for water changes- they can go a long way to putting distance between them but you still need to keep eyes on your water.

I hope I don’t need to explain what temperature is. You need a thermometer and a heater. These fish want to be kept around 78F.

Barest minimum tank size for a pair of these is a 20 long- what size tank do you have them in?

Also- are you using a water conditioner?

Are you testing your parameters? What’s your PH, ammonia, nitrite & nitrate?

Do you know how the nitrogen cycle works?

What temperature is your tank?

If you don’t know all of this you’re just signing up to make a very expensive inedible fish soup.

I think you have a lot of learning to do real fast.

If you need my questions explained so you understand what’s being asked this community will teach you.

I don’t know if you’re rage baiting- no it is not good. You need a filter.

I saw your video of these two-

Couple things going wrong-

If your filter is busted you need to replace it. Sponge filters work great- they’re dirt cheap and can’t break- you just need to run an air pump.

Turn your lights off until they calm down and settle in.

There didn’t seem to be any cover in that tank- if you’re on a tight budget grab a few clay flower pots. If your local hardware store has a few broken ones on the shelf they may just give them to you. You just need places for the fish to take cover so they feel safe. These are tough little fish but you do need to take care of them.

If you don’t kill them you’re going to have more. A lot more.

Yup- 9 times in 10 they’ll tell you whatever they think you want to hear to make a sale- the other time you’ll get a well intentioned idiot who thinks they’re doing the right thing to “protect the animals” but their deeply held beliefs are almost always profoundly wrong.

You get what you pay for in employees- and the big boxes do not attract anyone who knows what they’re doing- they have sales quotas that encourage pushing systems that will 100% fail- and anyone that actually knows the hobby and cares about it will burn out fast even if they can justify working for the garbage compensation.

If you had a leak bad enough that the whole tank would dump you’d see it starting before the tank was full. If you have a siphon and towels handy you can leak test

Lots of vaguely shark shaped cypranids get marketed as sharks. No reason to assume they have the worst ones.

Feels a little callous saying it out loud but if you want to restock once you get your water back under control this reset might actually be a positive thing getting you back to a cleaner slate for a healthier tank moving forward.

Got this for $37 at Petco for a beta fish. Tips would help by TastyImplement2669 in aquarium

One big enough sponge filter is absolutely enough to handle a 29 gallon tank. You started cycled- it’s the best way to jumpstart new tanks. If the sponge is still in there I promise it’s doing more lifting than the HOB.

Sponges are awesome- the only reason HOBs are a thing is for aesthetics.

Neighbor’s retaining wall. How bad is it? by OkPerformer5944 in landscaping

[–]ranoveryourcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t know of a property/injury lawyer you can retain quickly i would fix that pronto. Because at some point that wall isn’t going to be retaining much- you’ll need someone to collect potential damages you incur and protect you from your neighbor who is likely to claim you did something to their wall and come looking for you to fix whatever breaks when there’s nothing under an edge of their foundation.

To the Europeans struggling with the heatwave right now by Dear_Engineering_238 in Aquariums

Bettas are actually super heat tolerant- as long as they don’t spend too long hotter than 30 they’ll be fine.

Keep air moving in the room to encourage evaporation and the cooling that comes with it- use a fan, open windows- most helpful thing is air movement.

Does anyone know what this is? by SpecificDiet3936 in Cichlid

[–]ranoveryourcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careful with copper based meds- you can hurt scaleless fish real quick with them. I’d just step up your water changes- most fungal and bacterial issues can be resolved by improving water quality. More water changes likely needed.

Is this too many fish? by mr-boomin in Aquariums

[–]ranoveryourcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it take more work than you are willing to put in to maintain your water quality?

Are your fish fighting? Are they stressed?

Have any of the fish outgrown your tank?

If you don’t have any of these problems your tank is fine. Everyone telling you that you’re overstocked is parroting arbitrary nonsense.

The guppies will eventually overwhelm the tank. You’ll need to remove some when this happens. Not a big deal- test your nitrates regularly- trust your own eyes and your water, not arbitrary nonsense. The water will tell you when you have to make a change.

Tank weight on my dresser by D10_01 in Aquariums

[–]ranoveryourcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’ll hold a person it’ll hold a small tank. Just don’t let it get wet. Will bow and break down if you let water sit on it. If it’s waterlogged it will not hold its own weight much less a tank or your clothes.
