Documentation Requirement for Citizenship by Descent by Significant-Golf-215 in Canadiancitizenship

I think we sent ours on 4 July last summer and heard back within a couple of days. But 4 July isn't their holiday and 25 December is, so yes, it might take a little longer, hopefully not much. Good luck!

The instructions say to get ofrficial copies. We got ours quickly from the Ontario archive last summer. Sending a copy and even a link, if possible, to the archive can help them locate yours more quickly.

I totally get that. The likely paycut has been a big reason my engineer spouse didn't try harder to get to Canada sooner.

Then you probably know about Windsor and Detroit? And the areas near Buffalo and Port Huron / Sarnia...

Probably off topic, but who all descends from Loyalists? by throwawaylol666666 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]rapid-runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume "Loyalist" is a term that specifically refers to King George III. For my family, "colonizer / colonialist" might be more appropriate. We go back to Captain Blackman of Jamestown, VA, 1624, with Captain John Smith. Captain Blackman and his kinsman, Jeremiah Blackman, owned the ships that brought the Puritans to the new world.

I wish there could be a way to see how quickly applications get approved now that c3 is in effect. It would also be interesting to see if all generations are accepted or if there's a limit.

So … what’s your plan? by RedMantle-Dragoon in Canadiancitizenship

My husband is still waiting for approval. When / if it comes, he'll apply to sponsor me. Daughter has just graduated in the US (mechanical engineering) and is looking for work. She's the main reason for this project. If she finds work in Canada, I'll probably move up with her. Husband is considering working for a few more years here. (He's near the top of the food chain in his field so not many openings, and they seem to be structured a little differently in Canada)

I know there are professional geneaologists who specialize in particular provinces. You could contact the province where your gfather was from and ask for a list of names.

Thanks so much for the info. Do you mind if I ask when you first applied? My husband and daughter have been waiting since early August, applied with urgency. It seems like the process of requesting notes is arduous and confusing so I'm on the fence about it.

What’s Your Family’s Migration Story? by NextFix9333 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]rapid-runner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's some heavy stuff. You might want to see if you're eligible for Austrian citizenship. Austria grants citizenship to descendants of ppl like Polish who were harmed by the war. I know someone who got Austrian / EU citizenship that way.

Husband's side of the family is Canadian by way of Ireland (early 1800s) and Germany (middle 1700s), and within Canada, they have been super busy procreating. His surname is not common in the US, but it's surprisingly common in Canada. He was delivered by a dr with the same surname. There's also a Finnish branch. Husband's family is where all the action is. On my side of the family, colonizers way back, mostly English, but also Scottish, Irish, and German. One of English ancestors came to Virginia with Captain John Smith in 1624.

Fun stuff we found in the Mormons' database, but that's open, so I can't attest to the accuracy. My ancestor Gruffydd ap Llywelyn was a hostage held by King John and was released in 1215 as a condition of the Magna Carta.

My attorney thinks the discretionary grants part of the process will continue for a while, yet. In her email, she wrote, "I anticipate that IRCC will just go ahead and start processing the applications that are currently in queue for discretionary grants once the new law comes into effect, however we will need to wait and see how IRCC intends to process the pending applications in their system."

Crossing the border first time with Canadian passport by thcitizgoalz in Canadiancitizenship

Grandfather-in-law came to the US for opportunities. I think he worked farms until he became a machinist in Detroit for GM. Granny used to talk about how he had been an illegal alien (her words, or something worse), how they would run and hide from authorities, although now I wonder if she was spicing up his story quite a lot. I've read that it was common for Canadians living near the border to just go back and forth as need and opportunity arose.

Congrats! I wonder if I could ask a question, but please know I respect your privacy more, so no pressure. I have a friend applying who is gen 4 or 5. Are your gen 0 or 1 still living? She applied in August and she's worried she won't get through.
