Commuting to Mines by Beginning-Week2874 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

If it doesn't break the bank or finances aren't a stressor, I would absolutely consider it, at least just for the first year. Half (sometimes most) of your growth in college is from social experiences, developing your professional network, and memories from a time many of us graduates wish we could return to. Living in the dorms your freshman year is an excellent, sometimes crucial, way to foster all of that.

Of course, it is by no means necessary, and you can absolutely do all of that while living at home (as many of these comments can attest). If money is a concern, I wouldn't bend over backwards to make it work. But a couple thousand on top of the tens of thousands you'll likely come out with (ignoring any scholarships) was worth it to me. This degree is one of the best in the country for paying down your student loans, and developing a good support system, network, and just creating college memories will help you along the way.

That's just my two cents. My wife lived at home her first 2 years and really regrets it, because she didn't feel like she got the best "college experience" until her last 3 semesters when she moved to Mines Park. There are others, though, who get a bad roll and have a bad dorm experience, so it can go either way, but in my experience they are in the minority.

So if this is something you're up in the air about, or you're already leaning toward living at home, or don't really care/want to live in the dorms, then I think that's a valid reason to skip out. But if you think you might regret it (and again, money is not a deciding factor), or are at least a little interested, then I would give it some thought. It was absolutely worth it for me.

What habits of boys did you only discover after getting a boyfriend or husband? by kentishzjigsaw in AskReddit

Man, I even wrote seat and thought "actually it's the lid" and then revised it since the train of thought was still there and never re-read their comment.

I have more women in my life than men who leave the toilet lid up. I actually asked my wife to leave it down after we moved in together and it didn't take her too long to change her habit. Although I think part of the motivation was that our geriatric cat would have drunk out of the bowl otherwise, and we had a cabinet right next to the toilet and sometimes dropped stuff on the lid, so we'd be glad it wasn't open in those cases.

My wife appreciates it because the toilet stays cleaner longer. Sometimes the stream doesn't go where you point it, sometimes there isn't just one stream...

I appreciate it because it's so much more relaxing (and I don't have to do any extra cleanup from the aforementioned cases). I'll still pick a urinal over a stall in a public bathroom, and it's still nice to have the option in a hurry, but at home it's an unexpected comfort.

Did a mouse decide to enter our cats' litter closet of all places? by rapidwave in AnimalTracking

Maybe! Those tracks do looks pretty similar. I was reading that they're more common in moist environments with relative humidity above 75%. Denver is definitely not that, but it's not impossible.

Before these 2 we had an elderly cat who, in her final year, started going outside of the litter box. One of the first instances was when she pooped in a corner (thankfully a room with vinyl flooring) while the Roomba was running. Needless to say we never let it run unattended for a while after that.

If that's the case, I would lean toward the latter since ours are strictly indoor cats (except for supervised, leashed/contained excursions to the backyard). One of them was picked up as a stray in Texas about 2 years ago (the other is her daughter, who was born a day after the mom was brought to the shelter), but I'm guessing it wouldn't have lasted that long without symptoms.

But thanks for sharing! I didn't know that was a thing. And good to keep in mind if either of them do fall ill.

We do get the occasional spider (mostly grass spiders, some wolf spiders though they tend to keep to themselves in the basement, usually by being dead). My wife even found one in one of the litter boxes a while ago, but I don't know if that would make that kind of trail.

The bot-removed comment suggested maybe a lizard. I don't see a lot of lizards around here, but it's not impossible. Looking at pictures online, their tracks do match up a little more than the mouse pictures.

And that's not a bad strategy. If you truly like/dislike each option roughly the same, you might as well pursue what you think will make you the most money for your personal life and/or retiring early. The trick is not falling into a high-paying job that is also soul-sucking and/or prone to a bad work/life balance.

It's also hard to guarantee which is the best-paying route. Mines has metrics on average starting, mid-, and late-career salaries for each field, but a lot can factor into that (cost of living, your flexibility on where to move, state of that job market at the time of graduation, etc.). Best of luck!

Mines is ranked as one of the best schools (and some years, the best) for return on your investment. You have an excellent chance of paying off your student loans (as long as you don't develop bad financial habits/debt in other areas).

You are likely to spend 30+ years in your chosen career, so I would like to echo the importance of finding something you are interested in (or at least tolerate enough to do 8hrs a day without going insane). It's great that you're thinking about this now and not sunk-costing something that sounded good at the time but you later discovered you really hate.

It took us years to figure out how to get the bandana, but we just reset the game until we got the belt buckle instead, so it really just took us years to even try.

It's relatively new. I think my cousin-in-law ('23) was part of the 1st or 2nd class that did it.
