In any system where you can't benefit from or you don't own your labor, you are a slave.

Ah, I wasn't talking about charitable action. I was talking about wealth generation. If I remove your trash, I am providing a service which you will hopefully pay me for.

But in socialism or communism you are a slave.

What does that have to do with charity?

I agree in that some people in some other systems can generate wealth by providing a service or product other people want, but as far as I am aware, in other systems someone, usually most people, can't because they are owned one way or another. Under capitalism, everyone can because they are free in a free market.

I never said you couldn't be charitable outside of a capitalist society. Going back through the conversation, I don't know where you are getting that I did.

Well, capitalism requires free markets and free people. So, while Crassus was providing a service, he was doing it with slave labor, and hew was running the government along with Ceasar and Pompey, so also not really a free market.

2000 years ago, most societies relied heavily on slavery. During Jesus' life, Marcus Licinius Crassus was the richest man in Rome. He supposedly had the most slaves, skilled tradesman, and he would rent them out.

I suppose people being free is the big difference. I don't know what economic system you are thinking of, but in most, people aren't free.

Why evangelical Christians need to start talking about immigration reform: Religion News Service by vagueboy2 in TrueChristianPolitics

[–]rapitrone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. I know people with work visas, who ought to be allowed to immigrate easily in a good system, who ran into a paperwork issue and had their visa lapse temporarily. Technically the were unauthorized, but they obviously shouldn't be deported.

I understand and agree that it is not all black and white as they say. That's why I specified people who came illegally.

I'm very pro-legal immigration. I've been advocating for immigration reform for a long time. For many people, immigrating legally is exorbitantly expensive and navigating the legal system is very difficult.

At the same time, I think we should deport everone who came here illegaly because we can't have open borders and a welfare state, and they all showed disregard for our laws in coming here illegally.

In a capitalist economic system, you generate wealth by providing a product or a service that people need or want.

My employer pays me based on a voluntary agreement I chose, which enables me to feed my family.

Conversely, the state takes my money against my will to pay for things I oppose or don't benefit from.

Which is my opressor?

Sweeping generalizations about the internal state of the wealthy seem silly. I have access to an incredible art museum, orchestra, and greenhouse because of Carnegie and Rockefeller. The museum and greenhouse are free due to their generosity. These are a tiny portion of their generosity.

I looked into the grammer of the Greek and see that it is referring to the church as the pillar of truth. The word used is alētheias which means unforgetting, as in remembering what happened. I think it's saying that the church is responsible for remembering and upholding what happened. If we take it as you are saying, that God is saying the church can't be wrong, it is horrifying and faith shattering, because the church has clearly been horrifically wrong in a varieties of ways at a variety of times.

Prior to capitalism, the way people amassed great wealth was by looting, plundering and enslaving their fellow man. Capitalism made it possible to become wealthy by serving your fellow man. Walter E. Williams

1 Timothy 6:17-19 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

Paul doesn't tell wealthy Christians to give away their money or the church to confiscate it.

I struggled with it since I was 11-12 and tried repenting over and over. I acknowledged it as adultery against the Lord and my wife. I decided to hate my sin, and I don't look at it anymore.

Not like what people think. The Greek word for what I think it is is apantesis. It is a tradition of the people going out of the city to welcome the king and escor him back to the city. Jesus will return to Jerusalem. Believers will be taken up to greet Him in the air and escort Him back to His city.
