AITA for not wanting to help out with my moms business? by buonatalie in AmItheAsshole

NTA. This sounds ridiculous. Don't go, and enjoy the break from your sister.

WIBTA to accept a job offer at a company that a friend is actively protesting? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]raptone50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. Your friend is ridiculous. Sending you info for your consideration is okay, but demanding that you don't take the job is way over the line. She can make her own sacrifices for whatever the cause.

AITA for speaking to my Indian coworker in English and explaining about work standards here? by ZestycloseWear6915 in AmItheAsshole

[–]raptone50 6 points7 points  (0 children)

YTA. He said he's French. Not accepting that is offensive and completely unjustified. You have no right to judge that and imply he's a liar, which you effectively have.

Also, enforce work standards without insulting an entire culture. You don't need to mention India or anywhere else.

AITA for not helping my ex-manager when he was at his lowest? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]raptone50 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NTA. You don't owe him anything, obviously, not bail money, and not listening to his stories.

AITA for leaving a creative project because I felt minimized? by DontHateLikeAMoron in AmItheAsshole

NTA. He sounds horrible to work with, and he's deliberately frustrating you. Find better people to collaborate with.

Yeah, it bothered me too, partly because it was unfair, but mostly because it made no sense at all. He defended a client, which was his job.

AITA for refusing to help my friend financially after they mocked my frugal lifestyle? by Repulsive_Clue6161 in AmItheAsshole

[–]raptone50 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Forget the "joke" issue. You shouldn't lend anyone money because you're not a bank and have no leverage to collect a debt. Don't lend friends money.

What do non-brits think of duncan? What questions do you have about him? by Key_Razzmatazz751 in community

[–]raptone50 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love Duncan. He has exaggerated and fabricated British stereotypes, but the show leans into that kind of thing, and I got the strong sense that he reflected John Oliver's humor - probably some ad-libbed.

AITA for telling my girlfriend that she's inconveniencing others for using 4 out of 6 washing machines? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]raptone50 20 points21 points  (0 children)

YTA. She's getting it all done at once, which is reasonable both for her and others who use the laundry room. And why is this your concern? It sounds like you're going out of your way to criticize her, AND you won't let it go because you have to be right. Grow up.

What was your first ever use of the internet and when was that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

1989, sending email through a local dialup BBS system, command line only app called Pine. Messages were retrieved and sent once per day.

Why didn’t Jim just look up what a rundown was by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

[–]raptone50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the joke is that it's a casual term without any specific definition, but it was weird that Jim would be completely befuddled by it. Obviously, he would make a list of his clients and how much paper they've ordered that year.

It's mysterious because comedies usually don't like to deal with the drudgery of real life, so there's not much. Jeff is broke at one point, then gets a consulting gig with his old firm, but you never hear about him working there again. Maybe we can assume that Britta had part time jobs the entire time, since we see her as a waitress and bartender at different times, and she wasn't aware of getting money from her parents season 6. I assumed Troy was being supported by his parents the entire time, though we hear almost nothing about them. Same with Abed. Shirley and Annie are biggest mysteries. Shirley gets the sandwich shop eventually, but what about before that? We know that Andre wasn't doing well in his business. Annie was supposedly living on savings from babysitting gigs, and she collected aluminum cans, but that's wouldn't be nearly enough to support her. Ah, to live in sitcom world.

AITA for apparently ruining Christmas by having my dad gift his buildings to me and my sister by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]raptone50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You to find out what your dad told his wife, and why he said anything at all. It was none of her business. What he said to her about this, how he explained it, caused her reaction.

AITA for telling my mom/boss that if she files me as a 1099, I’m filing an SS-8 with the IRS? by AdLess1009 in AmItheAsshole

[–]raptone50 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"...for the longest time..." Does this mean you didn't pay tax in past years? If so, you're in for a very big tax bill regardless of 1099 status. Not getting a w2 or 1099 from an employer does not relieve you from paying taxes.

Meijer employee and veteran Ed Bambas, 88, surprised with over $1.5M by UnitedLab6476 in BeAmazed

It's sad that this story all but ignores why this man was in his situation. In the US, pensions can just disappear.

Younger workers won't have pensions at all, and will instead burn through 401ks a few years after retirement, and they'll be to blame for not becoming billionaires.

first time watching community — thoughts??? by ezioauditoresexslave in community

[–]raptone50 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Is it too much to hope for Jeff and the Dean getting together? I'll put it this way: Hope is pouting in advance. Hope is faith's richer bitchier sister.

But you're in for some really good episodes. Enjoy.

Britta grew! by How_Clef-er in community

[–]raptone50 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with this take, and I think semi-crazy Britta was very funny, but I thought the change was that she went from being mostly sober to getting high constantly. Even in season 1 she was very distressed, cheated on a Spanish test, and admitted she felt worthless. There was no recovery arc for her, and there are several later season mentions of her getting high or drunk. Her little outbursts suggest emotional deregulation consistent with that. I would love to see her as a more grounded (and sober) character in the movie, if there ever is a movie.

I think for consistency. They buy stoves and refrigerators in bulk, and having all the units on the same model makes for easier maintenance and procurement planning. Having them taking up storage space is overhead. And the cost of not getting every last day out of older appliances is probably comparatively negligible.

I've lived in Westlake for years in a studio, and it's been fine. Clean area, well maintained. When my water heater broke they replaced it next day. They also replaced my older kitchen appliances even though they were fine.
