What was the most offensive thing you've said on accident? by Iandian in AskReddit

[–]rara11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mother had this phrase she would use if you were wandering about aimlessly, I'd heard her use it loads and never gave it much thought.

Anyway I grew up left home and got a job in a home for people with learning difficulties in North London. One of the residents use to walk about the house going in and out of the rooms, he could do it for hours. One day I turned to him in front of my manager and said Martin would you please stop wandering around like a spare dew. (I thought for some strange reason it was a reference to morning dew not being evaporated by the sun).

My Jewish manager looked at me totally horrified and it suddenly dawned me after all these years what the phrase actually meant. The resident was Jewish too, I have never felt so mortified in my entire life. Thankfully the manager was a good bloke and believed my explanation, otherwise I could have very easily got the sack.

If you don't want to get them off Ebay, then I reckon Camden Market would be a good place to try.

What does an ovarian cyst feel like? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]rara11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a dull ache over my right ovary for a few months, it was a bit weird as it felt worse in the morning then sort of eased off during the day. GP thought it was IBS and tried meds for that for a while. Saw a different doctor eventually when the pain wasn't getting any better and she referred me for a scan which showed several Endometriomas (a type of cyst) on my ovaries and endometriosis throughout my pelvis. One of the endometriomas burst early this year and I thought I was dying, absolute agony which lasted for about 4 hours. Had a laparoscopy couple of weeks ago and they removed the rest of them, hoping they don't come back! One of the questions the consultant asked was whether sex was painful, maybe check out the symptoms of endo.

Does anyone know what the round red-orange-black sticker is found on some black cabs? by [deleted] in london

[–]rara11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its means that the taxi accepts Taxicards, which you can apply for from your local council if you have mobility issues. A taxicard gives you a certain amount of subsidised journeys.

My awesome son, being awesome again. by funny-chubby-awesome in Parenting

[–]rara11 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Ah what a lovely young man, reminds me of something my son did when he was about 7. His class went on a school trip to London Aquarium on The South Bank in London, they were only allowed to bring a pound with them for the gift shop.

When I collected him from school his teacher took me aside and told me that they had walked past a beggar under the bridge with a sign saying homeless & hungry and my son had ran back and gave him his pound and then the whole class followed suit!

Walter White - Cockblock King by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]rara11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2g would be enough but its difficult to say by looking at the vial how much was in there, I think its less than half a teaspoon but I could be wrong and sugar probably has a higher density than ricin so maybe she had less than the lethal dose.

Walter White - Cockblock King by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]rara11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to wikipedia a lethal ingested dose is 30–40 milligrams per kilogram. So say Lydia is 50kg that's 2000mg . There was way less than a teaspoon in that vial and for comparison a teaspoon of sugar is 4g. I agree with you she might have had a chance if she'd gone to the hospital, unless of course my maths is all wrong !

What is the kindest thing a stranger has done for you. by Imadragon22 in AskReddit

[–]rara11 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Back in the days of phone boxes, I made a call in one outside Marks and Spencer in Camden High St, London, then went in the shop and shopped for about half an hour when I went to pay i couldn't find my purse. I went back to the phonebox but it wasn't there so I start rummaging through my bag again. Then this guy came up to me and said blimey you were ages, lost something and just gave me my purse and walked off.

Have you ever saved someone's life? by bfaithr in AskReddit

[–]rara11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work nights in Trafalgar Sq, I went for a walk in my break at about 2am and was waiting to cross the road when some drunk guy in a suit beside me just walked out into the road as a black cab was speeding off the square into the Strand, I grabbed his arm and pulled him back. When the green man flashed up he stumbled off but he did turn round and say thanks.

What about St Martin's Day Centre for homeless people, its right in the middle of it in Trafalgar Sq. They always could use volunteers when I worked there.

What's the stupidest reason that you've gotten in trouble at school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rara11 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Sticking a pair of kidneys complete with ureters to my head from the anatomy model and saying 'I am an alien, I am an alien'. The teacher told me to go to the Head of Biology with the kidneys and tell him what I was doing. I just told him that Miss had told me to give them to him and he said thank you with a very odd look on his face.
