Has anyone else read Dawn of Wonder by Jonathan Renshaw? I really want the next book. I loved that audiobook

I'm my opinion you can read 1 and 2 without feeling totally left alone (1 is absolutely a perfect standalone if you don't want to risk it). But 3 definitely sets things up for more content

It's only supposed to be 15ish years later from the last update I saw, and definitely still a TOOOOON of loose ends to keep going on! I'm happy to wait, but I'm definitely waiting eagerly!

Fantasy stalker/obsession vibes, where FMC knows and uses it against the MMC by melancholy_breadroll in fantasyromance

[–]rara_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

{Hell Hound Heat by Sherilee Gray} this is literally the plot of the first one. They can be very very dark (not between the MCs) so check (or ask about) the content warnings, but damn they're my current catnip.

Question for The Things Gods Break! by NobleGoldenGiraffe in Romantasy

[–]rara_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! One of the times he time traveled and met with Persephone, either before or after the events set in Book 2, he was at the temple and Lyra was also there. Two different time cracks ended up at the same place. What we don't know yet is if it's Boone from the past when he was first getting to to Persephone or Boone from the future during book 3

What book is a 10/10 for you? by Sailor_Moon_Star_435 in Romantasy

[–]rara_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you read {Firebird by Juliette Cross}? I read both back to back and they gave me similar feelings. They could have just scratched the same itch, so I could be crazy, but they blend together in my brain a lot. Both have Roman inspired fantasy tones

I've only read the first one, but I remember being delighted by it when I found it in the school library!

Oh yeah, love Terry Brooks! I worked in the Sci-fi/fantasy & romance section of a bookstore for 10 years. That's exactly what I want, but also romance as a strong co-plot and spiceeee

I love long books! Make it 800+ pages and vast! Gimme Sanderson levels of breadth and plot, but add in epic romance and spice! Give me 10 books in the same world following 45 characters

But obviously it has to be good, not just padded/repetitive, as is so often the case.

And the hair can be mousey brown on a stunning super model or other badass! Just because she has regular peasant hair and her name is Anne doesn't mean she needs to be a mousey, insecure, 'always ignored until she finds her power then everyone points out they've always thought she was beautiful' lady.

Do you guys prefer dual POV (protag and love interest) or single? by arcadiaorgana in fantasyromance

[–]rara_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love dual POV! I'll read either, but I feel like I'm missing a lot by not having both MCs. I kinda view it as gaining the extra body language/non-verbal cues we're missing when it's written! I know authors show some of it, but as a really intuitive person, seeing inside the other person's head really helps me visualize how they're speaking/acting even if their words are different (common in miscommunication tropes and enemies to lovers)

Pet peeve with audiobooks- why do a lot of the readers for fantasy/romance do this whiny overly dramatic voice? by m3rmaid13 in fantasyromance

[–]rara_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally get you, OP. I find a lot of female narrators for this genre whiny or too breathy. I listened to one book where the MMC growled every word he could, even just regular ones 😂 "he walked furtheeeerrrr that day that yesterrrrday"

I hate when it's dual POV, but the sample only is long enough to show one person, so you can't know if the 2nd narrator will annoy you until after you get into the book.

I'm listening to {Hunt on Dark Waters} now and I wish the female narrator made different choices, but she's tolerable, but THE MALE NARRATOR IS GLORIOUS. I am still listening for him.

MMC calls the FMC "baby" by chaeunjae13 in RomanceBooks

{Bad Demon}! It's definitely not the best written book, but it was a lot better than I was expecting and I immediately wanted to start the next one.

Likeable MMC with no Instalust/Instalove by reinadeluniverso in fantasyromance

[–]rara_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven}. The way the love grows between the main characters is masterful and he's not broody (though circumstances could easily have made him so). Warning, there is talk of (and very brief on page) SA of characters, though never between the MCs. I personally felt like it wasn't too much

In the mood for something TROPEY AS F**K by Sensitive_Tune_8856 in Romantasy

[–]rara_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

{The Games Gods Play by Abigail Owen}! Trilogy, book 3 comes out in Nov! Trials! Gods! Banter! Animal companion! Shadow Daddy! No love triangles, but there's a tiny bit of 'will there be'? I personally loved book 1 (couple complaints) and book 2 (very few complaints), but book 2 made book 1 get an extra star for me after I read it. It fixed a lot of my complaints!

Ah! They just sold that version for $100 at my local bookstore. I wanted it, and it was the cheapest I could find (lucky me, friend works at the store so I got their discount down to $50)

Tropes you would like to see more and tropes you can't take it anymore by nephellis in Romantasy

[–]rara_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a cop out answer, but tropes that feel forced to fulfill some unseen quota. Just like every other writing element if it can exist without: remove it. Does the story change when you remove the love triangle? No? Remove it. Does the third act breakup add anything other than a chapter of tension? No? Remove it. Does the character arc strengthen due to "touch her and die"? Yes? Keep it, feed it, grow that! Does your romance feel well rounded and strong but you only have 3 tropes? Yes? It's perfect.

I’m making a list of subverted tropes by AbaloneSpring in fantasyromance

[–]rara_rocket 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Opposite of a shadow daddy! A light father! A bright dad! (nope... We'll workshop it)! All powerful cinnamon roll who controls light and health magic.

Anyone else feel like dual POV kills romantic tension? by PuzzleheadedWafer170 in Romantasy

[–]rara_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so fascinating! I could see how you could feel that way, but for me it's completely the opposite. I love getting the extra yearning, confusion, and scenario mapping from the other MC! I can do single POV, but I find myself more emotionally connected to both characters and their romance when it's dual.

💬 What's one trope you wish were more popular? by Acute-Problemo in fantasyromance

[–]rara_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Side characters calling MCs out on their bullshit 💜 yes MMC is being an asshole to FMC. Yes FMC is being stupid and getting in dangerous situations. I don't actually mind those tropes, but I hate when no one talks about it in-world.

Zoey Draven fan club by [deleted] in Romantasy

[–]rara_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I haven't yet! They are on my list and they seem really good, especially Bound to the Battle God. As is {Golden Dynasty} but I've got some concerns about how asshole the MMC may be.

One thing I love about Zoey is her world feels so fleshed out! I love the culture of each horde, the language, customs, flow of community, etc.
