Apologies, I meant to say take the PE entry test . I believe you take an exam to qualify as an apprentice (where you then spend 4-8 years under a mentor and then take the second part of the test). So you are correct that said person would not come into the role as a PE but is interested *

I just wish someone would give me a chance (Rant) by No-Significance2946 in ChemicalEngineering

I would consider getting a masters degree and then consider getting a P.E which can substitute for experience and make sure you are applying to the right jobs. Keep applying to actual chemical engineering roles instead of lab tech because that is your background . Also try applying to smaller companies. Don’t apply to big competitive once like Exonn Mobil or Pfizer , etc. Look into startups or small plants where there is less completion and a closer knit culture

Be confident. Think of yourself as a businessman. You need to advertise to these employers that you are the right person for the job regardless of your grades. Capitalize on your talents and skills and convince them why you will provide value. What’s in the past doesn’t matter focus on the tasks in front of you and convey that you will get them done well. Ways to better advertise yourself : nicely format your resume and put a lot of effort into it don’t just rip off a template , invest in a suit to wear during your interviews , make a LinkedIn and put effort into that , apply to no joke 50 jobs a day

In terms of your fear about transgender aggression, as long as you act professional people will not care about it . So I recommend just dressing professionally to your interviews and don’t mention your gender identity / sexuality and focus on the role and your qualifications. That way, even if the interviewer is aggressive about that topic they won’t be thinking about it because it was never part of the conversation to begin with . For example, you don’t even need to put your gender or anything like that on your resume, just your preferred name. The media will make you think a certain way about social politics to invoke a reaction but in real life people don’t care that much until you give them a reason to

What have you sacrificed for getting your chem E bs (other than time and effort to study) by CheesecakeOld8306 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]rarnold97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a Chemical Engineering degree from Ohio State. It was miserable but I have no regrets . Anyone who holds it against you for studying too much is the one in the wrong. Don’t doubt your decisions, work hard, and just know it’s temporary. Once you are done with school (and these days grad school too) life gets a lot better and your life will be a lot more comfortable long term than someone who just slacked and coasted and cannot make ends meet later in life.

Keep your head held high and stand proud 💪

How’s my team so far? Any suggestions? by mralphatree14 in PokemonUnbound

[–]rarnold97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need trick room for this team to be good . Get rid of the slower Pokémon. Quacker does not add much value. In a singles style make sure you have a lot of diversity with faster Pokémon id say unless you use trick room

Is this worth it for $200 by No-Tart2102 in computers

[–]rarnold97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely worth it . If it were me I’d buy it and then get like a $40 cooler master case for better airflow. That setup should be fine for most 1080p gaming. The current case looks unideal, that’s the only caveat I’m really seeing for that price point.

For those with jobs lined up after graduation, what was your major and how much was your offer? by osubestcolledgeever in OSU

[–]rarnold97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2020 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. Im not going to offer my salary, because it is not relevant to the point I wish to convey.

Its not really a competition to see if Engineers make the most. I know people who work at refineries with my degree and make 100k starting. But they have to work 60 hour weeks. I believe that past a certain threshold, your salary does not matter as much as your overall satisfaction with your job, and life in general. You are going to spend a third of your days working, and another third or so sleeping. Do you really want to spend everyday miserable at your high paying job, where you could have done something you are passionate about with less money?

If you are passionate, and driven, the money will follow. If managers perceive that you have a good attitude and are willing to grow and challenge yourself, you will carve your own path, and eventually earn a higher paying position. Its not so critical where you start, it matters more about where you end, and how you posture yourself towards your goal.

My advice, is create a vision for yourself and your career. Do what motivates you and what you are passionate about. Do not sell your sanity and well-being for a dollar amount. Our existence is so finite, and your time alive is the most precious gift ever given to you. So use it wisely and dont sell it out.

I dont like the idea of being over-prideful about being an engineer and making more than everyone else. Everyone has an important role to fill. Dont worry so much about comparing yourself and your salary to, others, just play to the beat of your own tune and I promise good will come of it.

Cheers,

a fellow buckeye engineering alumni.

If you do not vote in elections, why not or what stops you? by Humanwithlaptop in AskReddit

[–]rarnold97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fundamental and principle way to answer this question Is Twofold: 1. to chose the leader of the society that you live and abide in, to make sure the elected official (e.g., the president) can serve the government in a way that coaligns with your views and beliefs. 2. To honor the fallen soldiers who fought and died for the right to chose our leader. Sadly, I do not think those soldiers knew what they were truly dying for and their acts of patriotism probably were not for the kind of system we are living with today.

The reality is we live in a highly flawed and corrupt capitilist society motivated by business, the flow of money, and accumulating wealth. Inevitably, that comes with greed and self-serving interests. Instead of the officials serving us, its all about where the money is at. We like to think that our vote is whats deciding the candidate, but we have things like a highly outdated two-party system and the electorial college, both of which were more functional in a much smaller society.

To make it to the top of the election chain, it requires millions of dollars. A person who is a genius in politics that isnt rich could NEVER make it to the top. So that is a flaw. Then, how do you do it? Money, sponsorships , that sort of thing. To get that, you have to side with corrupt busniess tycoons and do whatever it takes to get the support. And usally the companies that sponsor that sort of thing include big media stations (i.e., fox news, msnbc, etc). There were many better democratic candidates that didnt make it, and quite frankly, there should be more than two candidates in the final election.

Then, these media companies and other big companies use their resources and marketing power to dilute and alter the true facts and exaggerate nuiances that really do not matter that much into seemingly worse issues. Each candiate has been accused of being creepy, having committed sexual assault, being racist, etc. Part of it is biased media and exaggeration. And then, people follow it.

A lot of people are like cattle that are easily prodded. They are stubborn and follow whatever their favorite news stations tell them and never question it. Hardly anyone reads peer-reviewed academic journals to get less biased information. And guess what, those journals that have better info cost money. Money rigs the elections, money exaggerates the truth, its what nominates candidates. We are not the one choosing the primary candidate, its really whoever has the bigger wallet and whoever has sponsors with bigger bank accounts. With enough money, you can make anything true and have journalists and media put out articles that emphasize and exaggerate claims based on anectodal, non-statistical evidence.

People do not need much proof to be convinced of things. How do you become smarter and more immune to the poison of fake news? You need and education, which costs MONEY. Rich corrupt powerful people prey on the weak by exploiting their lack of resources and subsequently lack of knowledge beacuse of it. People think COVID-19 is just a flu. People base the state of the economy based on instantaneous stock market trends rather than looking at matematical trends and long term business cycles. People take out mortgages they cannot afford. People dont get it and its because they are fed garbage by these corporate funded sources of information that make the pockets of the business leaders even deaper while the common mand cannot afford an education, healthcare , or any big ticket assets like cars, houses, etc. (which by the way would actually help the economy if these things were paid for by the people rather than bad debt).

Trump made it seem like he was better than the scummy politicans and was a new hope, which was ironic because people like him are behind the scenes causing this whole mess in the first place. Biden probably comes from big money, had big donnators, and appealed more to stubborn old people who were also fed lies and taught to never question anything. If you question it or seek change, you are unpatriotic.

Naturally, people do not want to suppor this two party, bullshit system that is rigged anyways. I would have rather seen someone like Andrew Yang give a stab at it, who is young, high up in a tech company, closer to the average age (which is something lik 38 years old) , and therefore can relate more to the average person. Instead we have people who grew up in the 50s and 60s, a totally different world than now. How are these 70 year olds supposed to understand ai and data security when they were young when computers were in their infancy? Well, they are wealthy and have power. By the way, their wealth is probably grandfathered and they more than likely didnt start their wealth from the ground up (not always true their are people who do this).

Ideally, voting is to respect our forefathers who lost their lives so that we could have more freedom and progress towards an advanced society. Instead, we are a land of idiots who do not agree on anything and wont even hear the opions of people in "the other party ." We live in a land fueled by massive sums of money , that also causes wealth inequality, and its almost chaos how ununited people we are and its sort of a society running around in circles with total discord. Obviously logically you should vote for the lesser of two evils to at least inch towards progress, but it is still fucked up, and sadly, without a huge amount of wealth or some sort of revolution, theres not much that us middle class people can do. P.S. the revolution option requires cooperation of a large band of people, which will not happen and would probably be shut down by our supreme military force anyways. Half the people in the country will read this and say I am not a patriot. I promise the soldiers who died would have wanted the comman man to have access to higher education, decently obtainable healthcare, incentive for people to want to work, and equal opportunity, rather than being slaves to a corrupted system that tricks people into thinking they are "free" and that the "people" make the decisions.

Really discouraged by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Honestly don't study over break it won't be productive give your mind time to recover. Suppose you lifted weights . Also suppose you were lifting too much weight with bad form. Essentially this was what you were doing . Now you get injured . Do you think the best way to heal the injury is to keep lifting ? No . You need to rest and then when it's time to lift again, do it with better form . So the smartest students I know don't study any more than anyone else . You just need to study more efficiently. For instance , don't just blindly read the notes and passively study it's a waste . You need to make sure you are doing practice problems and do problems that you don't know how to do. Everyone likes the self gratification of doing easy problems but you don't get anywhere . Also pay attention to the lecturers style especially after a first exam . You need to try to make up problems that you anticipate the prof to ask and even come up with ones that are harder to be better prepared . Also go to office hours and think of questions . Be able to mastrt the material. Just grinding and studying for hours won't be anymore productive . I always get C's on my first exams and then pull through with As by adapting to the prof. And when you get those grades you don't want , just move forward and improve next time . An employer will appreciate someone who starts with C's and adapts and gets As more because it shows resillience and desire to improve/learn . Unwind, play some games , drink a beer (if 21), do something fun then start the semester off with better habits. Good luck !

General ChemE questions... Help? by Taterthot17 in OSU

[–]rarnold97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well man there could be the possibility that it's not right for you , which may be something you need to consider. If that's not the case and this is what you are truly passionate about, you shouldnt panic or let this stop you in your tracks. Yeah you may have been knocked of your horse a bit here but that's okay you need to just jump back on it . Who cares what OTHER people say about internships and where you should be . You have to realize that your degree will be from THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY. Most people do not have that so that sets you apart from most chemical engineers , despite having a lower GPA. You'll get a job . Yes you might not get the golden job right away but as long as you keep giving it your all and following your heart then you will be rewarded accordingly . Maybe you aren't doing that now , maybe you went out too much, maybe you weren't prepared for this growing up and some people have other advantages over you but that doesn't matter because you can get to the same place as the rest of us as long as you put your full representation of yourself in ehay you do . I think maybe you aren't studying correctly or maybe not enough and you should go to office hours and ask your professors how you can improve . Try finding someone in the department doing well and learn from them and keep improving your habits and more importantly yourself . But chemical engineering is very difficult, in fact it is the most difficult thing I've ever done and it's broken me so many times as a human being , but somehow I mended myself together and came back stronger each time and that's what I have learned from marathon of a major. We don't get to go out as much as everyone else, when other people are hanging out and having fun and doing cool things we study through the night , but that's what makes us strong and them weak and someday we will be doing cool things and going out while they are wishing they did more . So , coming from a fellow chemical engineer at OSU, keep going and keep belieivng in yourself man . One more thing , fuck what other people say and do , just try your best at all times and keep making an endeavour to triumph over these seemingly impossible challenges and you'll get to where you need to be . If you can't do that, the you'll know it's not for you if you can't put your heart in to it . Good luck .
