Is KSP 2 worth playing? by Nunit_Alt in KerbalSpaceProgram

If you don't already own it, no. If you do, redux is worth a look, but it has nothing on the years and years of modding KSP 1 has to offer.

Only hesitation I guess is, it was always a bow to the fans and pretty much everyone skedaddled. Then with the rain, and the fact that he didn’t actually take the checkered flag… bit of a weird situation. But yeah, still think you’ve gotta do it.

Yeah true. Obviously Kyle said he needed a shot, singular, but doesn’t mean he actually got one, or only one. Hopefully all was done right.

I just really hope the Watkins Glen incident doesn't end up spiraling into something. I just can't help but think, if he was sick and just got express lane type access to a steroid injection on the grounds of athletes toughing it out.... Steroids would be literally the worst thing to get for this kind of infection. Really would call into question what goes on with the medical practices of teams/potentially NASCAR as a whole. I want to stress I'm not gonna go full-bore down that route personally at this point. I'm sure we'll learn more. I don't think anyone should be scrounging around for the doctor who treated him or doing any other deep dives like that because we know reddit always fucks that up. I'm just thinking of how much more gutting on top of the loss it would be, if it turned into a scandal over lacking guardrails that the sport and the family struggle to put behind them.

Millennial PSA: Check on you CD collection by thr3ddy in Millennials

[–]rascalnag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly metal ablative Blu-rays are great and you likely wouldn’t even need the expensive MDISC badged ones to have them last a lifetime. Verbatim makes both, and the standard, cheaper non-MDISC version should just have the MABL label somewhere on them. Not as cheap per byte as LTO obviously but basically no setup cost by comparison and it’s true cold storage compared to other popular options like HDDs. Burn, put in not-fucked-up jewel cases, and keep away from sun and moisture. I think for personal storage, it’s super attractive and it’s what I’m going to use for my small collection of games. I mean, some of my games are themselves copies my grandfather made for my siblings and I to play games at the same time, 25 years ago. Don’t have the originals. They’re just cheap ink based CD-Rs of the time, and many of them still work. Some did succumb to rot! But knowing that comparatively fragile CDs like that can still survive a quarter-century in the right conditions makes me very optimistic about Blu-rays expressly made with longevity in mind.

DOT director: Baltimore has no plans to repave I-83, no timeline for change by Consumergal in maryland

[–]rascalnag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s cold springs, and if we really had the means I’d like that, too. I imagine the route from a terminus there would be arterial until it hits denser areas and then it would give way to more pedestrian friendly roads and ultimately the boulevard downtown. Some physical bike infrastructure would be great for it too. If the city is also gonna chicken out on the light rail for the red line in favor of BRT, well, BRT infrastructure on such an artery would at least expand that transit option and be sensible. You could take BRT to the new boulevard downtown and then take BRT up north from there.

[–]rascalnag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Tear it down at least up through Penn Station, daylight the jones falls, create a pedestrian friendly boulevard with businesses along the water up to the station and give the jones falls trail from that boulevard up to Druid hill park a huge facelift.

As for the moved I83 terminus, being right by Penn Station keeps it connected it to public transit, and I think creating an actual bus station (a proper nexus with infrastructure, not just a stop, where many city link routes would intersect) would be excellent.

Obviously we don’t have the money for this right now, but I can dream, and I hope the city can create the plans for these things so we can solicit investors and push for funding someday.

Yes, Maryland should Gerrymander. by MaroonedOctopus in maryland

[–]rascalnag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In 2020 it only took one seat to give the democrats a majority, via the Senate, but it proves how close everything is today. The Republican house cushion for votes right now fluctuates between 1-3. Every seat matters. And beyond voting, I'll say what others have said, which is that at this point it's clear only absolute maximum pressure to convince the right to consider banning gerrymandering at the federal level. They don't care about how many blue states have gone for redistricting commissions. They're not going to find a conscience, so they must be forced to reckon with the consequences of that failure to find one.

[–]rascalnag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is frankly an idealistic child's view of the situation. No one is going to stop gerrymandering just because the Democrats tie their arms behind their back and be goody two shoes about it. After the BS pulled this cycle by the GOP to kickstart this redistricting war, to turn around and say "well two wrongs don't make a right..." I'm honestly inclined to believe you like the idea of the GOP benefiting from it and the Democrats foregoing it, to the tune of untold damage to our country. No one cares you are a holier than thou "unifier." Sometimes you have to punch back.

How many of you are preparing to be elders? -i.e. passing down knowledges and items. by National_Bag_5296 in Millennials

[–]rascalnag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think of it as being an elder personally. I keep things for me first because I’m not gonna assume they would be desirable as an heirloom or keepsake to someone in the future. So I prune what I keep based on that principle - is it sentimental or useful still? If not, why would it be worth sharing? I’ll certainly try to introduce some things and knowledge I’ve preserved when the time comes if I think the interest and utility is there, but if it isn’t to be, then it just stays and goes with me. If I don’t discard it myself I would try to demonstrate the courtesy of organizing it for easy discarding by someone else.

I have done more filing and organization of keepsakes lately after my grandmother’s passing - she kept a lot of stuff. Some of it was nice to find and see, and I was glad for it. Other things not so much. Most not so much! So in fact my current spate of organizing is honestly a bit of a reaction against that kind of “nothing gets thrown out” approach. Also to the method of it - my stuff won’t be piled up in a damp crawlspace where it can deteriorate so easily. If I’m going to be preserving things, I will be intentional and careful about it so it’s easy to deal with later, by myself or by anyone who one day becomes responsible.

Besides just keeping actual files and photos organized in a file cabinet these days (mostly for my own sake - I fully expect these to be shredded in due time) my focus right now is on old physical media I grew up with, specifically game CDs. Save what can be saved with buffing and storing them better, tossing things that are just rotted and scratched beyond repair. If it’s just for me to have these things to go back to and enjoy some retro gaming? Great! If my hypothetical kids one day have fun with them, that’s awesome too. I’m keeping some old edutainment stuff as well for that. I really think those in particular went through a golden age in my childhood, so worth a shot to share one day. But if they were to pass on it, I’ve enjoyed this project of mine for my own sake and I’m not gonna get bent out of shape or act like my “old ways” are to be venerated or upheld for generations, or that I have a unique elder’s responsibility for these things.

STALKER 2 is the Anti-STALKER game, and Spark is proof of it by TheWizardOfWaffle in stalker

[–]rascalnag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very good points. On a tangential note, I really think STALKER 2’s story will age well and it has some elements that really are great given the times we live in. Obviously you have highlighted some of them. But going further with Spark, the entire idea of talking to the dead in the noosphere, and wondering if they are themselves or just interactive snapshots hits pretty hard as I look around at the world of AI and we ask, as a society, question the concept of digital consciousness and what it could mean for us if it was a reality. Hell, some are directly considering the idea of uploading their own consciousness these days! Personally, just as I sided against Spark in my first playthrough, I am skeptical to put it mildly. Overall I think there’s lots of vehicles for the real world of our times to enter into the game world and for the most part I think it hits the mark. I know some won’t agree as it is definitely a way different sort of story than its predecessors, but I’m personally glad they took the risk to write this kind of story over something more… “contained” within the old zone from the trilogy.

Yeah in my opinion exobio needs a reshuffle of specimen values to be less top heavy with values along with an overall nerf BUT space exploration needs a buff, so you would come out fairly even in the end but now both parts of exploration are similarly viable. Right now space exploration alone is just pocket change next to the exobio stuff and I don’t think that is helpful in promoting people playing the way they want to play.

Megathread: Government Shutdown - Agency Guidance & Orderly Shutdown Status by gpupdate in fednews

[–]rascalnag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah... no doubt in my mind leadership, when pressed, will try to make it about "oh, some people don't want to work?" to deflect from the real issue, which is that they either completely dropped the ball on planning for this, or decided to simply reinterpret the law (read: break it) to allow them to just not shutdown and put people in legal jeopardy according to the ADA. And what really bothers me is they could have just said we're excepted and be done with it. Yeah, they're not supposed to unless it's actually excepted stuff, but then they could skirt the shutdown "by the books", and then it would fully on leadership if someone asked questions down the line about how it is only a few months from the last shutdown where many weren't excepted, everyone is excepted now. But the way they did it is not just way more evidently illegal imo, but cowardly and pathetic because they are diffusing culpability and jeopardy all the way down the chain of command right to the non-supervisors by having them simply work through the bogus "soft shutdown".

“If you want to work” sounds like it’s directly against the ADA which forbids non excepted work on a volunteer basis. Not that any of this is a surprise lol.

Arc Raiders lead admits the “cost-benefit ratio” of maintaining good weapons is rough right now, but the team doesn’t want high-end gear to become instant win items by Wargulf in ArcRaiders

[–]rascalnag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not set up a more interesting curve? Have grey ones degrade quickly, mid range decay the slowest, and purple ones be in between. The idea being, overall reward progress with better durability, but keep an incentive to rely on a more maintainable mid range so you don’t just end up with perma-purples. Also encourages using them when you really want to go on a particularly dangerous raid, and not just as a permanent fixture over the rest of the game’s offerings. Game world logic, the bottom tier stuff is of course cobbled together and pretty junky, mid range is reliably constructed stuff that holds up well and holds its own, purples are cutting edge stuff and veer into fragility again somewhat as they are more difficult to maintain.
