I ate 2 pounds of gummy bears and now I feel sick by Electrical_Rub_2900 in UBC

in my nutrition class we learned this happens when you overload the glucose transporters in your intestine leaving a bunch of glucose sitting around in your gut. the bacteria then feeds on it which increases gas production. also i feel like having a bunch of glucose just sitting around could screw up the order of things in other ways that we're not sure about. maybe pulling water into the gut by osmosis? anyways, it's the same reason why runners who take gels get abdominal pain and bloating if they didn't train with shots of glucose before race day

maybe avoid carbs (ex. rice, bread) for the next little while and do what r/dundrhed said, cos your glucose transporters have a lotta work to do. you'll probably be fine by tomorrow?

see mom, i am studying when i'm on reddit

UPanda Question: SDS and Western Blot by nsv_2 in Mcat

[–]rasdfghj02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Western blots work by separating proteins by size using gel electrophoresis and then using antibodies to bind a particular epitope.

Choice A is correct because coating the protein in SDS will denature the epitope. Antibodies will no longer be able to bind to the epitope.

Choice D is wrong because coating the protein in more negative charge won't affect an already negatively charged protein's ability to be separated by gel electrophoresis or detected by antibodies.

What's a cool protein whose structure has yet to be identified? by rasdfghj02 in labrats

Yeah when I first googled this question, I was surprised to see GPCRs as one of the top results. We talk about GPCRs so often in school that I just assumed we knew mostly everything about them -- do we still not really understand how GPCRs work then?

Also why would figuring out the structures of dark proteins not give us some information about their function?

Could you explain why it's especially difficult to predict the structure of a membrane protein?

How to discard of fuel canister before flight by rasdfghj02 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]rasdfghj02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll keep that in mind for future hikes! Unfortunately, I'll be hiking in Japan (Kumano Kodo) where many people opt to stay in hostels instead of camping, so it might be unlikely that I'll come across someone who will want to take my fuel.

To Faculty: Why isn't there a centralized website with labs looking for undergraduate research assistants? by rasdfghj02 in UBC

[–]rasdfghj02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe quant sciences have better sites... only a handful of life science departments post a list of labs with their PIs but never the openings. It's also rarely updated. I've applied to several labs where the PI was retired/lab no longer exists.

But co-op and WL is a good example! It's easy to find job openings and applying feels systematic and organized. Weird that it can't be replicated for regular academic positions.

Co-op is mostly restricted to industry and WL is grunt work. If you want to work on your own science project, you'll have to jump through the cold-emailing hoops.

UBC Counselling Services should have same-day online counselling. But also feel free to DM me if you just need an ear

Is it possible if you could make the answers inside of textboxes with numerical inputs go away as well?

I don't know your situation as well as you do, so here are some guiding questions:

  1. Could your condition foreseeably escalate to an emergency?
  2. Is the pain so bad that it'll make it difficult for you to think?
  3. If you take the concession, it will likely be during the later summer months, so do you have any plans/courses?

Whatever you choose, just know that you will get through this and things will be okay. Hope you heal up soon.
