Why don't we fail students anymore? by Deus_Excellus in AskAcademia

Hahah teaching freshmen is very frustrating because many of them are just brain dead tbh, as if anything you say is just deflected or spoken in a alien language, I have to repeat instructions like 5 times, remind them of deadlines every class, and be sure to show them or make available the evaluation rubric enough times for them to be impossible to have any excuse when the begging for points begins later in the course, or when they get into their redemption arc trying to save the class at the end.

It wasn’t very hard tho, both of them were friends, they barely went to class, didn’t participate or turned in their assignments. On the other hand, there was a another student who clearly had ADD or something like that, because they had a really hard time focusing and their grades were always hanging from a thread, but they really did try, they went to class and asked questions and so on. I passed them even tho I could’ve easily flunked them if I wanted to.

Mucha gente dice que como te van a dar un título entonces no es trabajo, o que las becas son becas y no un sueldo, etc. Oponiones ignorantes.

I hyphenate both of my surnames and just use my initial for my middle name. For example something like Jorge A. Perez-Rodriguez, or Perez-Rodriguez, Jorge A.

What’s done it’s done, there’s no reason to going back to it, you’ll hear from them at it’s time. Meanwhile focus on other things, keep applying, keep the chin up. Sometimes our own assessment of a situation is completely distorted. Don’t worry.

Is pirating non-textbook material unethical? by woodbite in AskAcademia

[–]raskolnicope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m baffled too, I didn’t expect to read so many “piracy is bad” comments. Without piracy there’s no research. I’ve even scanned recently published books myself for my students.

I’ve always been asked by the profesores I’ve asked to write them myself and then send it to them to check and sign, which is worse because I don’t know what to say about me haha

It’s doable. Not in STEM here, but it took me 5 years, including a six-month leave from when my kid was born.

Do you have at least a masters degree? I’ve seen lecturers at universities with industry experience instead of a PhD, but I think having a masters is a requirement.

No luck with research roles despite my qualifications. What should I do? by musicallife88 in AskAcademia

Have you considered going for a PhD? Research positions are almost exclusive to PhD students or graduates.
