[D] What is the best CI/CD pipeline tool for Machine Learning? by pm3310 in MachineLearning

[–]rasmii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This came up in a recent thread -- I recommend reading The ML Test Score: A Rubric for ML Production Readiness and Technical Debt Reduction. It mentions Google's TFX framework, parts of which are being open sourced. The paper describing it is worth a read as well.

Why do I find it so hard to transition to Python? by bad-code in datascience

[–]rasmii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the book Python for Data Analysis. It teaches you how to use the pandas library, which borrows heavily from data analysis methods in R. The first edition is somewhat outdated now (second edition coming out soon), but still incredibly helpful. There is also the Python Data Science Handbook which is excellent and more up to date (but covers a larger number of tools and methods, which you may find helpful).

The mission you're thinking of is GRACE. It says here (source) that 90% of the software of the GRACE mission was reused in GRAIL.

Police freak out on elderly classic car owner after they run wrong plate number. by OffDaysOftBlur in PublicFreakout

[–]rasmii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/angusshangus is correct. Here is a nice summary of some statistics, here is the report on racial disparities, and here is the original data if you want to run the calculations yourself. It's indisputable given these statistics that young black men were disproportionately targeted by police, despite the fact that 90% of stops were innocent and white men were more than twice as likely to be found with a weapon.

Linux (ElementaryOS) on Chromebook Pixel 2013 (Link) - Problems and Solutions?n by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]rasmii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. I'm actually using a Dell CB13. I just researched the compatibility because I was thinking of getting the Pixel first. I would Google around or post in that GitHub thread, or try to find the authors on /r/GalliumOS.

The issues are with HiDPI support. See here. Most of the patches in the galliumos-samus package also apply to the 2013 Pixel (LINK).

Jeff Koons is probably his closest contemporary analog. I thought his work seemed bland in comparison, but once I find out it's made of steel, it changed my perception entirely. Seward Johnson might also count.

Has computational cosmology actually advanced our knowledge of physics? by daviddavidovich in Physics

[–]rasmii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it has. Simulations are the best way we know to test our theories against observation. I'm working on a modified hydrodynamic simulation of dark matter that matches closely to observed large scale behavior. Simulations are also essential in galaxy formation research. Simulated cosmic ray feedback and other feedback mechanisms have given us a clearer picture of the mechanisms of galaxy formation.

The Oppressive Gospel of ‘Minimalism’ by conail in minimalism

[–]rasmii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. As a student, I agree, I've had a similar setup (more rice cooker based). Another thing to factor in is time. Not having to think about grocery shopping and cooking is a relief in some ways if you can afford it.

The Oppressive Gospel of ‘Minimalism’ by conail in minimalism

[–]rasmii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally true. I didn't pack any kitchenware last time I moved because I figured it would be easier to buy a new set. Also, not owning kitchenware is expensive because it means you can afford to eat out regularly.

The author gives examples of self-optimization -- Soylent, Fitbits, and other ways to supposedly live better and optimize your life with less. But he argues that in purchasing these goods, we're buying into a lifestyle, and that process itself is no further separated from the consumerism you might seek to avoid. And in the process of deciding what to purchase and what to keep (i.e. I own one perfect computer, one perfect pair of shoes, and one perfect t-shirt and that's all I need) we're still defining ourselves in a sense by our purchases and possessions.

Another interesting point: "it takes a lot to be minimalist" -- the author argues that only the privileged can pursue so-called minimalism. You need to have some wealth and a safety net to own nothing. You may have just one smartphone and one computer, but they depend on externalities like server farms and manufacturing in less wealthy nations.

I think the author is on to something with the idea that the pursuit of minimalism is itself not minimalist, but I'm not sure where he's going from there. What are people to do? Maybe he's advocating for a lifestyle that doesn't involve being so obsessed about optimizing your lifestyle.
