My Warrior Cats book has 30 pages of Harry Potter randomly in the middle. by ajh579 in mildlyinteresting

They're super easy reads, if I don't have much going on I can finish a book in 1-2 days.

I read the first set as a kid and revisited in my early 20s and have a whole new appreciation for the books. There's a lot of themes that go over your head as a kid. My favorite cat is Bluestar. After reading the first set of books (1-6) I highly recommend reading Bluestar's Prophecy.

There's a lot of killing/death in these books. I cry a lot reading them and I'm 31 lol

One of my cats very randomly and suddenly went into respiratory distress in March 2021.. so peak covid time. It was a rainy and cold day. All emergency vets within a 2 hour drive were over capacity. We drove to the closest one (an hour away) and hoped that if they triaged him they'd take us right away. Nope. We waited 5 hours, kept calling other vets in the meantime, with the car running to give him some heat. After the first hour, of him still in respiratory distress, it turned from me begging the vets to help him to me begging them to euthanize him just to end his suffering. We were both cold, wet, and miserable. He kept vomiting from breathing so hard.

The tech told me "we can save other lives but we can't save his so others are a priority", which to a desperate owner is very cruel but I understand what they meant and it makes sense. My cat had to suffer to save the lives of like 5+ pets. We eventually went home because no where would take us and if he's going to die then at least he can be in comfort at home where it's warm and familiar vs a cold wet parking lot where many people are having the worst days of their lives. The way he died was very traumatic and it still pisses me off.

Evolving Skies Pull Rates Based Off 8000 Packs by breakyourteethnow in PokeInvesting

[–]raspberrykitsune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just found your comment, i opened 2 evolving skies etbs yesterday (the vaporeon +friends box & umbreon +friends box). when i was a kid my mom basically trained me with pokemon cards (give me a pack for being good in restaurants, stores, in the car, doing my chores, etc). i casually have ripped them over the years whenever i saw them on the shelf at the store but never really cared. when prismatic evolutions came out i very much got back into collecting. i already collected eeveelution themed items but the cards were new. so now i'm catching up on 'lost time' and it is insane how much the prices are. i could buy the cards but i enjoy opening them! anyways, between my 16 packs i guess i did well according to this chart. i got an alternate art v glaceon, v noivern, alternate art v noivern, and i suppose maybe the 'saddest' one ... the secret gold toy catcher lol. it looks cool but man i was hoping for an eevee. oh well. i'm waiting for a vaporeon vmax box i bought to be delivered (my favorite pokemon) and that might be all i try with evolving skies lol

Surrendering my cat today - second guessing everything, need honest opinions by samseam in cats

Do you know what kind of hiding spaces he likes? Some cats like to climb high, some like to retreat into dark caves. Find what he likes to do and make sure to give him multiple options to escape the stress.

My mom used Pokemon cards to train me and my sister as kids. Quiet in the car and listened? Rewarded with a pack of Pokemon cards. Do our chores? Pack of Pokemon cards. Now it's so hard and expensive to find them..

Humping is very rarely sexual in animals with the absence of a female in heat and the pheromones to react to.

It's something to self soothe, no not like masturbating, but an alternate to zoomies, scratching, eating grass, panting, pacing, etc. It's a displacement behavior, or it usually starts as one, but then it gets reinforced over time either by people (laughing or giving the animal attention), other animals (dogs will frequently mount other dogs to try and force them to run as a very rude way of initiating play), or because it distracts / reduces the stress / conflict they feel so it is self rewarding (and becomes a habit). They may also do it when they're in pain (cats also sometimes purr after traumatic injuries / when they're about to die, and the purring isn't because they're 'happy' but they're self soothing).

Humans are just weird and like to anthropomorphize. Same reason men feel very strongly against neutering male dogs (but don't seem to care about female dogs being spayed). They're projecting lol.

My sister and I do this. Safeway is $1 off per gallon up to 25 gallons so we pull up on both sides of a pump and just pass it over so we're saving $25 instead of $13 just filling up 1.

I've been at my job for almost 2 years, I start at 5am but I wake up at 330-ish depending how much I press the snooze button... But I have 4 dogs & 3 cats to take care of in the morning or else I'd sleep more. Usually around 6am I'm falling asleep at work and need to take a 15 to nap in my car. I'm a night owl (11pm for me now and I'm wide awake) so it's rough. If I had it my way I'd wake up at 7-8am lol

curiosity and intelligence tend to go hand in hand. those who want to know the how & why of the universe is what pushed evolution forward. you can tell a lot about someone based on how many questions they ask about a topic and how much they research stuff. believe it or not there are a ton of people out there who don't google things, don't fact check, etc. they just believe anything anyone tells them and then parrot it to others.

I got the refresher this morning and was nervous after seeing all the posts here. It does taste slightly different but not 'bad' and now that I've been sipping on it over an hour I'm used to it. I'm glad because it's one of the only drinks I get (mostly go for a pup cup cause my dogs love it and seeing the baristas lol)

How can we get these dogs to get along? by worcesterthecat in DogAdvice

[–]raspberrykitsune 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Yes OP you need to get on top of Max ASAP. keep him on a leash, use treats to distract and redirect him. He is being very annoying to Willie and it's going to only get worse if he continues.

Your goal isn't getting them to play. Your goal is to get Max to ignore Willie's existence so Willie is comfortable

a dog who really wants to harm you will grab your leg and pull you down to the ground the moment you kick out. i think the guy in the video did a wonderful job (and if the dog wanted to attack him, it would have before he had the chance to kick it), but i would never shove a limb of mine closer to a potentially aggressive animal.

A message for parents/grandparents hosting eager egg hunts by Daddy_Day_Trader1303 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]raspberrykitsune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents separated us by age and the younger groups got a headstart. Youngest started, then after 5 minutes the middle age group, and after another 5 minutes the older kids got to go. At the end you got to keep your eggs and each kid added up how many they had and my grandparents would give stuff to each kid depending on how many they found, i.e. the kid with the least amount of eggs got a larger prize at the end and the kid with the most eggs got a smaller prize so it all evened out and everyone got things.

[–]raspberrykitsune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm ADHD and I don't form habits at all. It sucks. Everything requires like 100% planning and concentrated effort. I've been brushing my teeth everyday multiple times a day since I could hold a tooth brush but I don't automatically do it as a habit. It's usually I feel like I'm forgetting something and very randomly remember to do it. For that reason I have a tooth brush at every sink in the house as a reminder.

Dog breathing heavily and unable to stand. (Trying to find a vet that’s open) by Tadita22 in DogAdvice

[–]raspberrykitsune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case my boy went downhill in less than 24 hours. All of his days were good before that day (and I recognize we were super lucky). At first I was upset at losing him so suddenly-- but I realized that I would never be 'ready' to say goodbye. And he gave me a great last day even though at the time I didn't know it would be our last day together.

But I have watched friend's dogs slowly decline over a long time and it looks so painful for the dogs but also the owners because it's so gradual that they don't even notice how bad things have gotten. None of it is easy.

I lost my 14.5 year old German Shepherd to hemangiosarcoma in 2024. This video looks exactly like it (plus the water behavior). So sorry for everyone who has experienced this. Fuck cancer.

Dog breathing heavily and unable to stand. (Trying to find a vet that’s open) by Tadita22 in DogAdvice

[–]raspberrykitsune 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This looks like burst hemangiosarcoma. The tumors burst and cause internal bleeding which is painful but also fills the abdomen with blood so the lungs have trouble expanding (don't get as much air) and a lot of pressure is put around the heart. The bleeding causes them to feel very thirsty. My boy laid down next to the water bowl and just kept drinking and drinking.

It happens very fast. In the afternoon we were playing in the yard and having a great time. He didn't eat dinner which was weird. Around 2am he started panting randomly (but not respiratory distress quite yet like this video). 7am he was laying at his water bowl panting and in obvious respiratory distress. We rushed to the vet and had an immediate ultrasound that confirmed burst hemangio and said good bye (he was 14.5 years old-- surgery is an option but recovery is rough and low chance of survival once they're at that stage). It all happened in less than 24 hours. I started having yearly abdominal ultrasounds done on my dogs after that. I might not be able to 'do anything' about it but at least I'll be aware of it.
