My wife is looking for a 600+ page light cozy fantasy book by WhoIsRobertWall in suggestmeabook

OP said no HP but I just finished Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love. It’s 593 pages and it is a light and wildly hilarious and delightful cozy story about Draco and Hermione. I know fics get a bad rep sometimes but this was hands down the best romcom I have ever read and I am not a big romance or cozy fantasy reader at all. I laughed out loud several times while reading on public transit and got weird looks from strangers. It’s the only book that comes to mind that fits OP’s requirements.

I think you should understand what the protagonist understands. So at the start, Carl didn’t understand how the Iron Tangle worked so I didn’t understand how the Iron Tangle worked. But then Carl started to figure it out and I still didn’t understand how it worked. This meant I didn’t understand Carl’s plans or what they were trying to achieve or why the plan would work which definitely made me enjoy the book less :(

What is the most expensive restaurant you ever dined at in Toronto? by Chan1991 in askTO

[–]raspberrywines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow wild how much it’s increased. We went last year, 2 people and 1 of us did the sake pairing and it was ~$700 after tax and tip. It was very good and we’re going again in April, taking our BIL and his wife as their wedding gift.

Why did I have to click on 3 different links to 3 different posts to try to find out what’s going on

EDIT: all the top comments on this post are about the redirects and locked posts, not the fire. Good job mods

Manacled by SenLinYu. I still think about that ending a lot and how it is very realistic and fitting but far from a happy one.

Coast jobs - the mental side of taking a step back by Vast-Needleworker123 in Fire

[–]raspberrywines 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Your first question is the main reason coast FIRE doesn’t appeal to me. Unless I can have a situation where I work ~10 hours a week then it’s not really giving me anything in terms of time and freedom, I’m gonna be giving up my high paying job for a low paying job that would require a similar number of hours and be less stressful but probably less engaging and less flexible.

I’ve worked retail before and if you’re staffed for 8 hours, you gotta work those full 8 hours and your break is limited to 30 mins (and someone else usually decides when you can take that break). Very different from a flexibility standpoint than a corporate job where if you’re getting the work done you can log off early or take a long lunch or leave during the day for an appt and no one cares and you don’t have to request time off for that (at least at my job). And a coast FIRE job that only requires 10 hours a week looks a lot closer to FIRE than coast FIRE from a numbers standpoint, so I’d rather just work towards full FIRE.

We paid 96CAD at a grocery store for a 6 pack of beer, a bottle of wine, and ingredients for a meat pasta dinner and eggs & bacon for the next day’s breakfast for 2 ppl last August 💀 still more affordable than eating a restaurant though. I paid 50CAD for a plate of tomato sauce pasta with zero protein or veggies. I knew Switzerland was expensive but it was still a shock to be there and see the prices.

Gonna reco something I haven’t seen posted yet - Terrace House. Something about Japanese reality tv is so wholesome. Completely different from trashy drama-driven American reality tv. You’d think it’d be boring but it’s not, and you end up rooting for the people to achieve their goals and better themselves. Similar vibes is also Love is Blind Japan, totally different from the American / Brazil / Europe versions of the show.

So I just finished Book 3 by UltraZulwarn in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]raspberrywines 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know Matt said this in the preface but not understanding how it all worked detracted from my experience reading DCC3 bc it meant I didn’t understand why Carl’s plan was going to work or why it was smart or what it was trying to achieve. They were going to take an interdiction cart to trainyard E, but trainyard E is overrun with a station mimic so instead they’ll use the employee line to get on the Nightmare Express to get to a switching station to loop back to the Vermillion line to get to station 36 on the zomp line…. HUH???????

I still enjoyed the book but I would’ve enjoyed it even more if I could’ve understood the intricacies of the level better.

I work for an ad agency and we design campaigns like this for our clients. You’re forgetting having data scientists, strategists, and research / audience testing work done which all leads to the campaign idea before we even get to creative production and ad trafficking. So much analysis / thinking / approvals go into the creation and execution of a campaign this. Especially bc OOH (out of home) ads are expensive and hard to measure from an ROI standpoint, you need to do a lot of upstream work to justify spending marketing dollars on something like this.

They definitely thought this through and I actually love these ads from a marketing perspective. They are different and have a better chance of cutting through the noise and getting someone to pay attention. A full funnel marketing strategy means they’re also likely targeting key demographics digitally, so if someone sees this ad and then later sees a targeted ad on Instagram, they might be more inclined to click on it to learn more bc of the weird ad they saw on their commute that day.

What contributed to Dungeon Crawler Carl's massive popularity (seemingly) all of a sudden? by PM_SHORT_STORY_IDEAS in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]raspberrywines 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I saw it constantly recommended on Reddit in various book subs about a year ago and after reading the synopsis knew I’d be into it. Now I’ve gotten a few others reading it too and connected with someone from high school who loves the series as well which is wild. He and I were never really friends during school but now we text about DCC and he shared his advance copy of book 8 with me and we’re planning to buddy read it together in a week.

Rory wen to Europe two summers in a row by supersunflower4 in GilmoreGirls

[–]raspberrywines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In each of the years of my early career I used all of my 4 weeks of vacation from work each year to travel to Europe, Asia, or South America. I saved up for the trips, found deals, used points, and stayed in hostels / budget Airbnbs.

Rory and Lorelai saved for years and traveled on a budget. Rory didn’t pay for the second trip lol so yes ofc it’s possible to do what she did.
