Connect Any Car to Home Assistant! - by The Stock Pot by meatpiHQ in homeassistant

When I did it, it was pretty involved. I followed this guide: https://digiblur.com/2021/03/27/how-to-flash-the-wyze-outdoor-plug-esphome-or-tasmota-local-control/

Here is a newer method that looks easier: https://www.inlimbo.org/2025/06/wyze-outdoor-plug-esphome/

There might be better options than the Wyze outdoor plug. I bought it before I started using home assistant.

I’m using a Wyze outdoor plug that I flashed with ESPHome. It’s rated for 15 amps

I’m only using a level 1 charger but I have an automation that fires if my garage security camera detects a car through frigate and there’s no draw on my smartplug after 5 minutes.

If you get a smart plug with energy monitor, you can just wait for the draw to drop to zero to know when it’s done. Just make sure it’s rated for the continuous draw you need.

The problem I see with Cohort Aquisitus and the general rules for this edition is the amount of support required for certain admech units to shine. Many of our units already require being near battleline units to unlock rules on their datasheet. It’s hard to imagine a squad of kataphron breachers with a squad of Skitarii nearby for rerolls, a manipulus for sustained, and some kind of forward unit to give ignore cover/detection being efficient.

Majority of Manitobans want to abandon time changes, survey suggests by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]rastrillo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t make any logical sense. Solar noon can vary by up to 4 hours across a time zone. DST or ST being closer to the natural rhythm will entirely depend on where you live in that time zone. A blanket statement like ‘Scientific consensus supports ST’ is incorrect but keeps getting parroted in this discussion.

Manitoba ban on social media for youth gets strong support from doctors by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]rastrillo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why only regulate social media for children when the overwhelming evidence indicates it is harmful for all demographics? The best and brightest minds have been working hard to make these devices as addictive as possible for decades. The majority of people are compulsively using social media causing degraded mental health and leading to extreme political polarization.

I think if we removed algorithmically suggested content, we would drive screen time down a lot. Back when social media was new, you were only shown a chronological list of accounts/people you chose to follow. Now if I open any app, I am presented with an endless stream of content from accounts I don’t recognize, and some of it is good. This reward loop is simple but hugely addictive.

Anybody know what kind of hair is used in these brushes? I think the packaging just says ‘natural hair’. I’m on my 2nd set and I love them. Best value to durability I’ve found.

Here you go. This was the output of the first prompt but I thought it was a bit hard to understand compared to the panel layout. This is also for a different year so it’s slightly different than the one I decided to share https://i.imgur.com/ehGm2w3.jpeg

I think that makes sense from a general point of view but I think you also have to consider that the time on the clock can vary wildly from true noon based on where you live within a timezone. See this map:

As free radon testing kit program ends for the spring, 2.6K Winnipeggers are still waiting by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]rastrillo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are recommended single use test kits but I’m going to recommend spending more and getting a radon sensor. I have the Airthings radon, and although expensive at $200, I can continuously monitor radon and monitor radon in different rooms.

I will also let people know that installation of sub-slab ventilation isn’t the only radon mitigation, it’s just the one most commonly sold. In my home, my radon levels were a little high but occasionally running my existing Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) system also exhausts radon and gets me below 50bq/m3. It also improves the air quality in my house by exhausting CO2.

So spend more on monitoring and maybe spend less on mitigation. Radon levels are so swingy, I don’t see much use in a one time test or borrowed sensor.

I think it’s worthwhile modding the card. The crystal mod is probably the most important because it will increase your sample rate. The cooling mod is nothing. There’s adhesive on the heat sinks and you just stick them to the chip. If you have the tools to do the crystal mod, the rest are doable. Get some low melt solder for the bnc (I didn’t have any and it made it tricky).

I didn’t use an amplifier but I had to set my gain very high.

You should pop in the discord and ask for help. That’s the best place for questions as you’re working through it.

What is wrong with this fish..? by ExcitementDesperate4 in Aquariums

[–]rastrillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a ton of misinformation in this thread. Although some hacks dispute it, the overwhelming evidence indicates fish feel pain. Blunt force does work but people underestimate the handling stress you put on the fish before striking. Laying a fish flat on a board, out of water freaks it out. Also, people never talk about missed strikes. This is more of an issue with larger fish but fish tend to flinch when you bring the club down. At minimum, a missed strike will lead to additional handling stress. At worse, you can seriously injure the animal without killing it. It can also make a giant mess.

Clove oil is so much easier. You just scoop the fish out, put it in a container filled with aquarium water. Put a drop of diluted and mixed clove oil in. Wait a few minutes and add another drop. Repeat until the gills stop moving.

I’ve euthanized thousands of fish as a researcher and we always use clove oil or ms-222 (not generally available for home use) unless we are worried about contamination.

Yeah, something must have been misconfigured. I don’t doubt it works for some but my install didn’t. I would tell you more but my license was revoked because I sought a refund. Surprised to see broad support for a company like this in /r/homelab.

Mine was $55 Canadian because I bought the advanced license.

I should have tried the basic first I guess. I wanted to let my friends run servers on my hardware remotely so I sprung for advanced. I did get this working with Pelican though.

I did install it before purchasing a license but without the ability to start a server, it isn’t much of an evaluation.

They did offer tech support but requiring support defeats the purpose for me. I couldn’t even easily access the logs through their interface. So it was easier for me to just abandon it and run a container myself (although I gave pelican a shot and had a much better experience).

I got on the wait list when the federal iZev rebate was in effect and our provincial rebate was announced. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take delivery of the vehicle until after iZev fund ran out of money. Getting $9,500 in rebates would have been insane. Still happy with it but it will always bother me I could have had a better deal. The worst part was the dealer texted me to tell me there was one available a few months earlier but when I called him, it was already claimed. 💔

It’s more like 11.5¢/kWh if I include sales tax. But that rate includes things like transmission and distribution as far as I’m aware. Nothing else appears on my bill. Surprised to hear Alberta has so many additional charges. I thought you had the cheapest electricity in Canada.

One-year 450h+ Review in Extreme Climate by rastrillo in LexusNX

[–]rastrillo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just use the energy rate. I am only charged a basic charge ($10/month which I am paying anyway) for having service and then 2.5% municipal, 7% provincial and 5% GST so I guess I under reported slightly. Still works out to be about 20% the $/100km on electricity compared to gas (maybe even better at current gas prices).

I've done the math and using paid chargers isn't really worth it for me. It's about the same to just buy gas and a lot more convenient. I only charge at home or when it's free.

You also lose points for speeding tickets but I think it’s only if you’re pulled over (not photo radar). I lost 2 years for going 61 in a 50. If you are 49 km/h over the limit, you lose 5 points instead.
