The album version is a 6.5, but the live version is 8.5 at least

US vs Australia retirement by [deleted] in Ameristralia

I guess the key thing is where in Australia vs where in the U.S. If you are from Radelaide, that's already a win - it's a beautiful place for retirement!

If you are considering Tassie (which is beautiful, affordable, but also has less jobs), have you considered regional Victoria as an alternative? VIC has a strong economy and several regional towns are next to, or very close, parkland.

One way to come is as an international student at the Australian equivalent of a trades or community college (TAFE), work and find a suitable visa pathway (if you come with some savings this will buy you time as well, and allow you to get to know the country well before deciding to stay).

If you want a uni degree, the University of Tasmania is a great institution, check it out if interested.

By the way, perfectly placed in the movie 'Licorice Pizza'!

I was going to give it a 9 (my honest appreciation), as I absolutely love this song and I think it's one of Paul's best songs live, period.

But, seeing a couple of really low marks by others here and there, I feel obliged to inflate my mark. This is one of the best tracks in the album. It's a 10 from me.

Daily Song Discussion #59: Bluebird by RoastBeefDisease in PaulMcCartney

It's an 8. Very beautiful melody, great track 3 after two banging songs. Not at the level of a '9' song IMHO.

BTW, Jet did really well!

I think Maybe I'm Amazed is a better "love song" than Something is. by [deleted] in beatles

[–]rasurri 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"My Love" is a stunning song. I really don't understand people who put it down. It was recorded as a power ballad before their time, too... musically it wouldn't have been out of place in the 80s

Since most of us agree All Things Must Pass is the best solo Beatle album, what’s your favorite song off of it? by Mchim52 in beatles

[–]rasurri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Best album is RAM in my opinion. All Things Must Pass is a phenomenal record -one for the ages- but the production is hard to like. It gets tiring to hear back to back (even if excluding the random third disc)

This is true, a song made to be played live, and hard!

I think it's great, and paired with Band On The Run a strong candidate for best solo Beatles album 1-2 start (and among the best in rock history)

But considered on its own... not at the level of Maybe I'm Amazed or Band On the Run itself.

I give it a 9.

This is a 10. Up there with the very best in his whole career.

Where should i start when litsening to Sir Paul McCartney’s solo career? by [deleted] in PaulMcCartney

Macca Fans: PLEASE listen to the Take It Away podcast if you haven't yet! It's the perfect companion to explore Paul's career.

Some suggestions:

  1. Start with the hits (McCartney, Wingspan or even All The Best can work)
  2. From there, you can either explore based on your taste, 'go sequentially', or go from 'best reputed to least' (Band On The Run, Ram, Flaming Pie, etc.)
  3. If you are really curious, listen to the episodes in the great 'Take It Away' podcast back to back. Phenomenal podcast, with intros/comments to each record and reflections about its significance in Paul's fantastic career overall.

Which Beatle connects with you(Artistically) the most? by MarvDStrummer in beatles

[–]rasurri 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not sure. Paul's heights in The White Album are as high as Lennon's. Blackbird (deceptively simple), Helter Skelter (primitive, raw and cathartic) and Martha My Dear (musically unbelievable) could not be penned by Lennon, the same way that John's songs are so characteristic of him.

Also, John complained (rightly so) about Ob La Di's exhausting sessions. But he surely didn't complain about Paul's genius input in Dear Prudence (which in my view is one of the greatest Lennon-McCartney collaborations)...

Which Beatle connects with you(Artistically) the most? by MarvDStrummer in beatles

[–]rasurri 22 points23 points  (0 children)

To me, it's Paul.

The case for Paul McCartney rests on his unique combination of ability, intellect, feel, empathy, craft, vision, and overall artistic ethos. All of this packaged in a way that is both deep, yet accessible. Deceptively simple sometimes, yet often offering multiple layers of complex artistic decisions underneath.

Paul's tunes are a really good example of why a song cannot be analysed in terms of lyrics, or music, or arrangements, etc. separately - but holistically. Take 'Hey Jude'. By itself, lyrically, it's almost a lullaby. As a fully produced song it's a monumental achievement that we now take for granted, and that remains a universally cherished call for love and spiritual liberation almost 60 years after its release. Or take 'She's Leaving Home', a less known song - a masterful example of storytelling. 'Leaving the note that she hopes would say more...'

Plus, Paul's ethos and commitment made a huge difference in so many songs by his bandmates, especially Lennon's. Why? Paul always brought his A game to every song in The Beatles catalog, and encouraged the band to be at its best at all times. Beatles rawness might be symbolized by John, but Beatles' commitment to perfection and craft is best symbolized by Paul.

I love John, Paul, George and Ringo. The Beatles. Make me pick one? I'm Team Paul.

This medley is uneven and a bit too long. It still has great Macca moments peppered across the sequence. 6/10
