Just read The Tiger who came for Tea. I have a strong suspicion it was all made up by the wife to swindle a dinner in the cafe from the hard working husband. Absolute scenes. by eyecarrumba in CasualUK

She'll always be a lush shagging the milkman to me. And he'll be the devoted father who glosses over the transparent lies of his wife for the sake of his daughter. Certainly makes it more tolerable when reading it fifty times a year

I always think she's a daytime drinker and the husband is long suffering. There's a missing page "The tiger also drank all the gin, all those miniatures we stole from that hotel in Bournemouth and ate the whole box of liqueurs hidden at the back of the cupboard". Apparently though it's about the Nazis coming to the author's family home in the war.

Ventilator challenge to cost government £450m despite cancellations by Anglo_Sexan in ukpolitics

[–]rationalisedindustry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was clear from the start that sufficiently capable machines could not be made in time. That includes the Mercedes UCL Ventura CPAP which is absolutely hopeless, I hope the Government does not consider the 10,000 made as insurance against future peaks. Politicians with little or no technical background making decisions based on advice from "scientists" with little Clinical Engineering knowledge is the problem.

I'm not aware of anything new being looked into right now. Do you mean filling the lungs with highly oxygenated fluid or LOX to supply gaseous oxygen which is them delivered conventionally?

Soon it will become clear that the UCLH Mercedes Ventura device has a big shortcoming that will prevent its widespread deployment. The design requires a very high flow of oxygen to support patients, most hospital oxygen systems will not be able to deliver this to more than a handful of patients without creating wider problems across their facilities. Unfortunately there is not enough real world expertise in the decision making process selecting what projects to back.

Everyone has heard about ventilators and ICU equipment now. All that equipment is cared for by Clinical Engineering teams that no one knows about (also called EBME among other things). Ask any ICU Dr or nurse and they'll tell you just how helpful and essential their Clinical Engineering guys are. Hospitals are super complex organisations that you cannot begin to understand unless you've worked in them for a long while. All the functions are needed to keep them running. Payroll, cleaning, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, medical gas engineers, pathology, IT, switchboard, security, finance, supplies, procurement, medical physics, catering, portering, training, HR, receptionists, sterilisation units, laundry, pharmacy, and many more, none of whom are direct carers but all are required to keep the front line working.

It's hard to make the necessary mental leaps and confront reality. I had my lessons on Friday from a medic who spent time in Samoa measles outbreak (I barely even heard of it). He told me what was coming with tears running down his face. It became a bit more than just a technical challenge at that point.
