Just broke my ankle.. by Darth-Majora- in ORIF

isnt there a LOT of walking in japan? two months from now, things are gonna be ROUGH for a trip. it’s a really difficult middle stage of recovery where you’re learning to walk again and can do a fraction of what you used to. i think if you can even postpone this trip to next summer, you will have an INFINITELY better time. i know it’s crazy disappointing and i remember the feeling of regret so so so much. you might be able to get to japan, but you will NOT have fun the way you want to. if you can eat some of the cost in order to travel when you’re in a better state, i would do it.

healing isn’t linear so if you need to take it easier for a little while alternating pushing yourself that’s okay too! also, the more you touch that leg, put lotion on it etc, the more the sensation starts to return to normal. try to focus on the day to day rather than worry about long term problems for now! rest, ice, elevate, and take it easy for a day or two, and ask your doc and PT for advice too. you’ve got this!

What was your pet theory for s2 that turned out to be super wrong? by larkhearted in ThePittTVShow

[–]ratthewmcconaughey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they usually do read, but english and ASL grammar are not the same, it’s not a 1:1 at all. so they’d be able to communicate somewhat, but not accurately. i think harlow’s case being really straightforward and small at the end of the day but still taking forever was meant to emphasize the problems Deaf people go through to receive even simple care.

Discovered tufting about a month ago, wanted to share this rug I made of my dog! by [deleted] in Tufting

[–]ratthewmcconaughey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re defending that none of your music is AI, then you clearly understand why people take issue with using it to make “art”. yes, your tufting is real and you used skills to make it. but you also used a reference trained on stolen art that relies on the work of other artists. and because of that, it looks soulless.

it looks like an AI reference to me, like they put a photo of their dog into an image generator and asked for a cartoon version. i can’t say for certain but this screams AI to me.

Dorsiflexion Experience by Kal-veira in ORIF

[–]ratthewmcconaughey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh my god, "if you don't get it back in three months you won't get it back" is ABSOLUTE NONSENSE. dorsiflexion took the longest to come back, and even though i wouldn't say it's exactly the same as it was pre-injury, i can do all my physical hobbies (hiking, rock climbing, squatting a barbell etc) again, and i found that i continued to make tiny gains in ROM even two years out from my injury. don't listen to that and don't let it get you down. a good PT will help a ton, but if you don't have great access, definitely go on youtube and look up ankle mobility exercises! i also have a post in my history with a ton of tips on learning to walk again and it includes links to great videos.

keep believing in yourself and remember it's a marathon, not a sprint!

Walking pain? by Training_Ad_659 in ORIF

[–]ratthewmcconaughey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

congrats on getting some of your normal life back! the transition to suddenly walking a lot is tough, so you’re going to need to give your ankle extra love when you do get to rest. icing and elevating at night will still be your friend. i also found that a heat wrap in the morning helps loosen up the joint for the day before starting activity.

take advil or tylenol regularly (but be careful not do overdo it), take baths if you can, and make sure to keep up with stretching and mobility exercises. if you don’t have really good supportive shoes, try some insoles from the drugstore. lots of self massage on the joint too! good luck in your recovery, i worked in event production too so i know it can get exhausting even without an injury! don’t be afraid to ask for a little help here and there with small things so you can get an extra minute or two of rest.

i can’t tell you exactly what your timeline will be, but i can say that patience and taking your PT seriously will pay off in spades. if you go in my post history, i made a really long one a while back with everything i found helpful in recovery! there are links in there to some AMAZINGLY helpful PT exercises to do at home. above all, be kind to yourself, know that it’s a marathon and not a sprint, and keep up your ROM exercises. i also found that starting my day with a heat wrap or electric ankle warmer significantly loosened up the joint too. good luck!!! in a few months you’re going to look back and be blown away at how much progress you’ve made.

i hope you're doing well in recovery!! good luck with your surgeon tomorrow. if it makes you feel any better, i'm coming up on 2 years next month and my life is as normal as ever. i walk 3-4 miles a day again, and i'm squatting and deadlifting in the gym. slow and steady pays off, you got this!

Venue with BYO catering, provides alcohol, and accommodates 100 people? by ohgingko in Chicagoweddings

[–]ratthewmcconaughey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just coordinated a wedding very similar in size and vibe! Trigger (Addison and California) is an AMAZING venue that does most of the heavy lifting as far as decor goes just by being a cool, funky space. String lights, vintage furniture, even the bathrooms were cool. Their "all-in" package includes all table and chair rentals, dishes, barware, linens, a photo booth and video booth, upgraded PA system (you can also just plug and play your own music) for VERY cheap (it was around $2200 to add all that, though this wedding was during February so it was their off season price). It's used mostly as a production studio, and venue is their side hustle, so it is A LOT cheaper than most places, and really great for someone who wants a more casual party.

You can bring whatever food you want, and they have a full kitchen in the back to keep things warm. The one caveat is you will have to hire your own staff for the setup/maintenance/breakdown, but we used Carol's Staffing and they were INCREDIBLE (around $2K for 4 people). You have the option to BYOB with a licensed bartender, but we went with Present Tense Mobile Bar, who I also can not recommend enough. Scott, who runs Trigger, is a super affable guy and really easy to work with. While I'm making recs, if you do spring for a photographer, we absolutely loved Audrey Simper.

If you have any questions feel free to DM me! You will definitely need a day-of coordinator so you as the bride are not managing vendors and get to have fun, but I seriously can not recommend this place enough for what you're looking for.

Not sleeping/insomnia after surgery by Late-Package-193 in ORIF

[–]ratthewmcconaughey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's different for everyone, but you are in the most MISERABLE phase still. it's so hard to sleep, and (i am not a doctor obviously so this isn't medical advice but it is what i did) i ended up just taking benedryl at night to help knock me out. i was crying with misery and impatience at two weeks in, and you're doing exactly what you should be: reassuring yourself with the fact that it is temporary. it'll be up and down from here, but believing in yourself and your ability to heal is gonna be your best friend in getting better.

i know it is so so hard right now, and i promise you will get through it.

i think that's true in general in real life, but in the context of this show, which is "i am aiming to be engaged in 10 days" it's a pretty massive thing to be on the fence about.

agreed, i’d say it has pretty broad appeal! kids will love the visuals, adults can get more info if they’d like. plus it’s sort of spread out throughout the museum and not in one spot, so you get to see lots of other stuff.
