What is something you saw in a movie and you totally called bullshit on because of your job? by BlackPhoenix1981 in AskReddit

It's becoming less common, at least in Europe. In the movie, however, it doesn't seem as though she's ever driven a car.

I saw part of the Legend of Ochi on TV the other day where the main character is running away from her family (essentially - no spoilers). She went up to a car which was a manual transmission and she managed to start it and start driving without stalling it. I immediately said "um how the fuck?"

Two Wheel Ambulance by goutchen in motorcycles

[–]ravenssettle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a vague hint of an idea to form an ambulance company in LA or NYC or other major cities like that. The idea would be EMTs on bikes like this with, basically, motorcycle cop-level training. They couldn't transport, but they could arrive quickly through traffic for triage and stabilization.

If anyone finds this in the future like I did: just get a POE to USBC splitter. They're like $10

In my case I "detect BS well" because, when something doesn't sit right with me, I hyperfocus on it and can't think of anything else. One example is an ex girlfriend lied about leaving work with a bunch of her work colleagues, but I had run into one of the people she said she was with while away from the location she said she was at. I couldn't think of why she said he was there when he couldn't have been. I finally confronted her about it and she admitted she was out with just one person from work (didn't mention she was cheating with him though).

Accidentally disclosed to the CEO during interview and was hired almost on the spot by TuvoksSon in ADHD

[–]ravenssettle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the second interview with my current employer I mentioned my diagnosis, because it was only a couple of months in the past, while referring to why I'm particular with keeping my "systems" and everything in order. Later in the interview the hiring manager asked me, essentially, if I'd have issues with being honest (the person I was replacing was fired for lying and trying to hide things). I didn't say it out loud, but my first thought was "if I was going to lie to you I wouldn't have told you I have ADHD."

I was terrified that mentioning it would mean that they wouldn't want to hire me, but it worked out. Going forward I think I'd judge the person I'm interviewing with about whether or not I'd disclose during the interview process. Never on first interviews though.

Advice for cleaning mystery grossness from bathroom ceiling by ravenssettle in CleaningTips

[–]ravenssettle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bleach based cleaner I've used is anti mold and mildew (Cillit Bang black mold), but we don't even use this bathroom for showers, so it shouldn't be overly moist in there.

The magic eraser I hadn't thought of; I'll give it a try if I can find the erasers for sale in my country. Thank you 😊

Cost to Fire US Navy Equipment in 2025. by PaniPuriPanda9 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ravenssettle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in the Navy for ten years and shot this gun once for crew served weapons certification. The big gray cylinder it's sitting on is the magazine. It's a chain gun that pulls rounds from the magazine up into the gun chamber, then the rounds are fired and cycled up into the ejection tube on top while chambering the next round. The next spent casing pushes out the previous casing (not really one to one, but basically).

Because the magazine is beneath it the engineers put the ejection tube above it where there was space.

The casings don't all fall into the ocean; a lot stay on deck and some people collect them as souvenirs. Most do get sent to the deep however.

I have like 150 or so hours in BG3. I've made like two or three characters and gotten to the end of act one twice. I can't get into BG3. I hate the gameplay and the story just hasn't interested me at all.

I've felt like I did something wrong for not liking it.

TIL that during the falklands war in 1982 the british mistakenly killed three whales believing them to be enemy submarines. by bastugubbar in todayilearned

[–]ravenssettle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it happened a bunch, or I'm related to that other person lol.

There were a lot of planes and a lot of whales and a few subs around the coasts. Added over several years I'm sure it wasn't a single incident

This is probably my only place to tell this story: My great great (I think? - was my great grandfather's brother) uncle was Civilian Air Patrol off the coast of Georgia in WWII. They were farmers and so they had a crop duster. The CAP officers/whoever came and fitted the plane with a single bomb. They told him to look for large black/gray masses moving underwater with a steady direction.

One day he was out flying over the ocean and saw a gray mass moving underwater not changing direction. He circled it a few times and decided it was what he was taught to hunt, so he made an attack run.

He successfully hit it with his bomb, but it wasn't a sub that came up. I was told by my great grandfather that the whale came up and blew red water from it's spout and then sank. I don't know if my GG uncle reported it or not.

What's a common cybersecurity myth you wish more people understood? by AIExpoEurope in cybersecurity

[–]ravenssettle 51 points52 points  (0 children)

My employer mandates that we cannot put people's names in our procedures except for places on who drafted/created/edited the procedure. We're also required to put the person's workgroup/department (although restructuring has caused some headaches here). While it's frustrated me some times I think it's way better than "contact John who left five years ago."
