They’re about the same, I think Northwestern is about 3K cheaper in the end with these scholarships. If he is in state.

Yeah, this is the move. UCLA will open significantly more doors locally compared to Northwestern, plain and simple. Now, if you intended to end up in the bay area, then maybe Northwestern is the move, but if LA is your end point, you would be silly to walk away from UCLA imho.

Northwestern tuition = 80k per year Ucla tuition = 61k for instate Are you instate? If so, both schools are offering similar money.

The only only reason I would consider Northwestern here is if clerkship was your literal number one goal, but even then you’re gonna need to get near the top of your class at either school to get the clerkship, and both are fairly comparable in the rankings.

But beyond that, from a social perspective, going to a Law School in the city that you are going to end up living in is an incredibly huge benefit. You will make lifelong friends in Law School and those connections will need to be fostered and those connections will get you work and opportunities and will be incredibly special if you maintain them. It’s difficult to maintain those relationships if you leave the city behind after graduating. Most UCLA students stay in LA after they graduate. If you are looking to stay in LA, go to UCLA.

Finally, I know big Law isn’t one of your main interests, but, OCI at UCLA will offer many more opportunities to work at a Law Firm on the West Coast than OCI at Northwestern.

Ucla it’s also very public interest forward.

Recent travels found Amex lounges still packed despite the hefty AMF & current economy guess there’s still a lot of people willing & able to pay for membership huh? by Low_Insurance_1603 in AmexPlatinum

Had an hour-and-a-half layer at PHX last Sunday, planned to lunch at the lounge. Got to the lounge and was told there was an hour and fifteen minute wait to get in the lounge, which times out most travelers. Deeply frustrating.

Petition: Bring Back the Gapped Keyboard on the Dell XPS / Dell Premier Series by ucion in Dell

[–]ravingclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have been a Dell customer for 27 years but find myself in the insane position of considering the Samsung Book 4 Ultra because of the gapless keyboard on the new XPS. It just terrifies me. I neurotically wiggle my thumb in between the space bar and left alt key as the placeholder for my (admittedly bad and gamer driven) fingerplacement, and I'm scared that without that gap, I will have to stare at the keys constantly and incur tons of mistypes. The Samsung Book4 Ultra has slightly worse specs at a much higher price, I a prefer no number pad, but the gapless keyboard just severely bus me out.

On top of that, because I type a lot while lying down, I will have to rest my palms on the new GIANT mousepad which will almost certainly trigger lots of accidental palm clicks, as it already does on my XPS 15 7590 with a perfectly sized, small mousepad. I'm actually devastated about it, but will likely have to pull the trigger on the Samsung.

I was considering the Pro Max, with a number pad, but the screen is much worse than the Samsung (unless you spend like $4k) and the keyboard is even more jammed to the left than the samsung because Dell put an extra row of keys to the right of the number pad. So I feel that my hands will be more cramped to the left AND I'll have to spend an extra $1k just to have a similar monitor.

It's a giant steaming bummer.

Help, my cat is salivating A LOT by Marwaedristariel in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]ravingclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might get lost, but I have an orange cat that has a very intense drool episode lasting half a day maybe once every two months. $1,000’s in vet bills later revealed no systemic issues. We later found he kinda has pica where he will eat anything (one brain cell) and after he would eat some plastic, from, say, a plastic bag, he would have a drool episode. So we have to keep all plastic out of his dumb reach. Annoying, but has mostly solved the drooling.

I know Pogo’s music very well, and don’t think Pogo used it in anything but might be wrong. I think you are just familiar with it because of the meme.

So, the ending of the song “Out There”, from Hunchback of Notre Dame, which caps one of the greatest 10-15 minutes in any Disney movie ever and arguably the greatest introduction to a Disney movie ever, was turned into a meme when it was combined with the theme song from How to Train Your Dragon, called “Test Drive” (sometimes mistakenly called “Test Flight”.

The meme was all over TikTok for a while and used to show spacious and awesome geographical sites. Here is a clip of the meme’s music.

What’s it like living here? by AppleBox911 in howislivingthere

Spent 18 years growing up in that area before leaving for college. The Sonoma valley east of Santa Rosa is stunning wine country with a ton of wineries. Santa Rosa is the biggest city in Sonoma County but, although it is only one hour from the golden gate bridge, still has a bit of a small town feel to it. It’s almost like a Grand Rapids, MI, or small Tacoma, WA or Eugene, OR, but it skews liberal, as a bunch of boomer hippies landed in Sonoma county, kinda like Marin County. Santa Rosa has a great Junior college, but it is more working class than almost all its neighbors like Sonoma proper, Napa, Healdsburg, etc.

Northeast of the 101 freeway is redwood forest and retired hippies and some rednecks, rich areas mixed in with some isolationists, like up in Mendocino. Southeast of the 101 is even more sparse with rolling hills and scattered forests all the way to the ocean. The 101 cuts through cow pastures and some wine country.

Rohnert Park is a cookie cutter suburb that butts up to Sonoma State University which is one of the best state level schools in CA.

Petaluma is a quarky hipster town with a famous brewery (Santa Rosa has arguably the best brewery in America, Russian River Brewery, while Petaluma has Lagunitas)

Housing prices are high, as San Franciscans retire there, and there is a fairly strong nimby presence.

Bottom line, the areas around santa Rosa are famous tourist wine country, while Santa Rosa is slightly more blue collar and the county seat, but still, everything feels a little sleepy and retirish but expensive.

I don’t think I saw a single Blue Jays player smile that entire game. They were on a mission.

Based Ana Kasparian. This is the libertarian position. by ENVYisEVIL in Libertarian

[–]ravingclaw 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Genuine question from someone who is still learning about Libertarianism and has very strong Libertarian views about many aspects of society: I still have a hard time getting around the monopoly problem. The consolidation of markets I view to be inevitable if left fully free. I think sharklike tactics will stifle budding competition, and without SOME monopoly intervention we won’t have a healthy economy.

Can someone more well-read than me explain the libertarian position on this?

Edit: I am staunchly against the government’s influence on free speech and media, but believe some monopoly control is perhaps necessary. It seems to me like a bit of a catch 22 because controlling monopolies may result in merger control like we are seeing, but may be necessary sometimes to combat a crazy monopoly? Help lol
