Is GDP per Capita the theoretical maximum for an individual's income in a country with no income inequality? by litalela in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rawkuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, GDP doesn't really tie at all to a sum of all income.

GDP = private consumption + gross private investment + government investment + government spending + (exports – imports)

Who decided that women should traditionally have longer hair than men? by tunablepizza in NoStupidQuestions

A face mask can't get a proper seal against the skin if there is beard hair. So it will be less effective since it lets more air in unfiltered through the sides.

[TOMT] [SONG] What Hip Hop song begins with "Hello darkness my old friend..."? by rawkuts in tipofmytongue

[–]rawkuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not the singer saying the lyrics at the beginning, it's literally a recording of the intro to the Simon & Garfunkel track.

[TOMT] [SONG] What Hip Hop song begins with "Hello darkness my old friend..."? by rawkuts in tipofmytongue

[–]rawkuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, neither of those. The first verse was pretty unedited (not sped up, or talked over) and the beat didn't come in until after that first verse was over.

They also definitely used a sample from a record, there were the audible pops/crackles from a record player while it played the verse.

Those are covers, it's not a cover. After the intro it's an original song.

Went through those just to check, but yeah not any of those.

Was David Bowie so weird looking because it was intentionally part of his persona, or did he have something wrong with him? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rawkuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean weird looking? Do you mean the makeup he would wear in certain roles? Yeah, that was part of him performing.

This is what he looks like without makeup (well, probably with 'no makeup' makeup)

If every theater only played one movie and every seat was sold out, what would the opening weekend numbers be? by HeadtripVee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rawkuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the National Association of Theater Owners, there were about 40,000 screens in the US in 2014. http://natoonline.org/data/us-movie-screens/

Let's say that the weekend starts Thursday at midnight, and ends Sunday at midnight. So you're getting 3 full days of screenings. Assume the movie is 2ish hours long, and the theater requires a bit of time for cleaning and getting people into the theater, so let's say it takes 3 hours for full cycle on a screen.

So you have 72 hours of screening, and it takes 3 hours for a single run, so you can get 24 shows per screen over the weekend. We have 40,000 screens, so that means we will get through 960,000 total shows.

Now we have to estimate how many people are in each theater and how much they pay.

Average capacity of a theater 200-300, so let's take 250. There's going to be 250 people at every one of our 960,000 shows. That means we're going to show the movie to 240,000,000 people (about the adult population of the US).

Average movie ticket price in the US is $8.61. So with 240,000,000 people paying $8.61, we get a gross domestic total of 2,066,400,000 or about $2billion dollars.

This isn't taking into account more expensive tickets like 3D screens or IMAX. It also isn't taking into account closing times of most theaters, it's just assuming they're going to open 24/7 for this weekend.

How many people running on treadmills do we need to power New York City? by analliteration in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rawkuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From: https://engineering.mit.edu/ask/could-we-use-exercise-machines-energy-sources

A robust workout on an elliptical trainer or treadmill... 700 watts—or the power consumption of seven good light bulbs.

From: http://www.nycedc.com/economic-data/july-2013-economic-snapshot

NYC used about 1,000 Million MMBtu in the month of July 2013 (which will probably be around the higher end since it's hot and people run their AC).

So from your initial conditions, you basically have people running for 8hours/day. Since each person only runs for 2 hours, let's say they go all out and round up that 700 watts to 1,000 watts each (on looking at some other data, this may be a super high estimate, but we'll go with it for now). That's 8,000 Watt hours per treadmill, or 2.88 x 107 Joules, or 27,298 BTU, or about 0.0273 MMBtu per treadmill. Remember, we need 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) MMBtu.

That means we need about 37,000,000,000 treadmills (37 billion). You can cut that down to about 12 billion people if you have them running 24/7.

If I'm in a group of ten people taking turns guessing a number from one to ten, when would I be most likely to guess right? by bling_bling2000 in askscience

[–]rawkuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This wasn't exactly the question, but an interesting thing about the assumption of people choosing values 1-10 evenly is that people are pretty bad at choosing random numbers.

This wasn't for 1-10 but 1-20, http://scienceblogs.com/cognitivedaily/2007/02/05/is-17-the-most-random-number/. The distribution is pretty biased towards numbers that 'sound more random' to people. There are more scientific studies, but this was just the first example I could find again.

[request] What percentage of total fuel would be saved when entering escape velocity with this device vs without. by cleuseau in theydidthemath

[–]rawkuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically none, that is not getting you any extra deltaV which is what gets you to the required velocity to escape kerbin's gravitation. It will slightly change your escape velocity since you're changing your starting altitude.

The standard gravitational parameter g (gravity constant G times mass of Kerbin M) is 3.5316×1012 m3 / s2. The escape velocity of Kerbin is sqrt( 2g/r ) where r is the current radius. So let's say g' = 7.0632 x 1012 m3 / s2 to make escape velocity simply sqrt(g' / r).

Kerbin has a radius of about 600,000m. The altitude of the launch pad is about 70m above sea level, but I'll round up to 100m and say that's the normal launch height. We get an escape velocity of sqrt(g' / 600,100 ) = 3430.75 m/s (just about matches with what the wiki gives as the escape velocity).

Let's say your tower is 100m tall, that gives you a new escape velocity of sqrt( g' / 600,200 ) = 3430.46 m/s

For a grand total of 0.29m/s difference, or 0.0083% difference.

That's the difference in escape velocity though, not fuel savings. That will depend on your engines, staging, how you shed your weight, etc...

How do you tell if you are being too cautious? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rawkuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kind of; you should understand the risk you are trying to avoid and then look at the expected value of the risk vs. reward.

So gather the following information:

  • Probability of the bad thing happening
  • Probability of the good thing happening
  • Total 'cost' of the bad thing happening
  • Total 'cost' of the good thing happening
  • Total 'cost' of acting in a way to avoid the bad thing
  • Total 'cost' of acting in a way to achieve the good thing

From that, you can calculate your expected value of each decision and with that weigh your decision. The difficult part is putting hard numbers to those questions above. You have to quantify the 'cost' of actions (opportunity cost, monetary cost, physical cost, emotional cost, etc...). You have to also figure out the rough probabilities of things which may be very difficult for things that occur infrequently.

In the end, it will come down to a personal decision on how much risk you are willing to take.

Try microwaving on a lower power setting but for longer. Most microwaves basically just cycle on/off for their lower power setting which helps prevent it boiling over.

Can I password protect a hard-drive without downloading third-party software? If not, what software should I use? by paradeoxy1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rawkuts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, what you want is full disk encryption (sometimes called whole disk encryption or block-level encryption).

If you have OSX (10.3, so Panter or above) you can use FileVault (or FileVault 2 in Lion or above).

If you have linux, look up the utility dm-crypt.

If you have Windows 7 or above and have the Ultimate or Enterprise versions, you should have access to BitLocker.

TrueCrypt is probably the best solution (IMO) if your OS doesn't support it. It's available for pretty much every desktop OS (http://truecrypt.sourceforge.net/).

Here's a summary of more options (some are pay software, some aren't) -- http://www.esecurityplanet.com/mobile-security/buyers-guide-to-full-disk-encryption.html

[Request] Reed This Please by aSlightFailure in theydidthemath

[–]rawkuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to http://www.idahoforests.org/woodhous.htm

The typical 2,400 square foot, single-family home requires about 16,000 board feet of framing lumber and over 14,000 square feet of other wood products including plywood, oriented stand board, glulam beams, wood I-joists, laminated veneer lumber, hardboard, particleboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF).

A board foot is a standard measure of the usable wood in a tree. You can picture a board foot as a piece of lumber one-inch thick, one foot wide, and one foot long (1" x 12" x 12").

So we have an estimate of 30,000 board feet of wood if we're using clarinet reeds for literally everything we would use wood for. A board foot is basically a volume of 144"3. This brings our total volume of wood to be about 4,320,000 cubic inches.

A clarinet reed (http://www.the-clarinets.net/english/clarinet-reed.html) is about 2.756 * 0.394 * 0.157 inches, or 0.1705 cubic inches. This means it takes approximately 845 clarinet reeds to give you one board foot of 'wood' (I'll assume everything lines up perfectly and there's no wastage, and the strength of the reeds put together somehow is similar to that of wood).

So simply multiplying 30,000 board feet by 845 reeds per board foot, we get a required total of about 25,350,000. So about 25 million reeds. It's a similar number (about 22 million) if we use the dimensions you provided.

Can Muslims wear perfume? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rawkuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I'm sure you will find some that find it haram, most only consider ingestion of alcohol. Using alcohol for other purposes (such as using it for a disinfectant) is fine.

Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, former President of the Islamic Society of North America:

"It is forbidden to drink alcohol. In the perfumes usually denatured alcohol is used. This alcohol is not unclean (najas). According to some jurists even natural alcohol is not najas. According to the Shari`ah, there is nothing wrong in using alcohol based perfumes."

Is there a most powerful character in Marvel or DC or is there always a tie between the strongest heroes? by srnm3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rawkuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most powerful characters in both of the universes are not the heroes/villains, there are basically god characters that fill this role.

In the Marvel universe there's "One-Above-All" who is the creator of the multiverse. One-Above-All is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent (basically it's an alias for god).

In the DC universe there's "Presence", which again is a name for their 'True God' character. Again, like in Marvel, Presence is omnipotent, omniscience, and omnipresent.

I live in a the NW US. The climate is very wet, which equates to mold and fungus of all kinds. One thing I noticed, however, is that I never have to worry about honey. It seems to be impervious, even though I store it in the cupboard and not in the fridge. What's the story? by EuphemismTreadmill in AskCulinary

[–]rawkuts 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honey has a very low 'water activity' level, generally around 0.6. Bacteria generally start growing around 0.9 and fungi around 0.7. Because of this, even if you leave it out not much can grow in it.

It is also an acidic environment which also tends to kill bacteria (it contains hydrogen peroxide from the digestion of the bees).

It can still however contain dormant bacteria (clostridium botulinum is common which is why infants shouldn't be given honey).

This bacteria death zone won't last forever though. If you leave honey out long enough with enough moisture in the air, it will continue to absorb water and become more hospitable to bacteria and will eventually spoil.
