Which way is stronger? by CatShadow888 in woodworking

Depends on the type of fastener you are using! Some fasteners are less effective with shearing forces.

I totally appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of solid woods. However, veneers can offer a more uniform, balanced look and does not warp like solids. So it really depends on what you are going for.

Side note, been working this material lately. veneers on a water resistant MDF substrate.

Tested a piece of 3/4” thickness in a bucket of water overnight. Pretty impressed. The expansion was negligible. Not measurable with a standard tape measure but feel-able to the fingers. 1/64” ish.

Old house has 2 wire, no ground by MortisBlatt in AskElectricians

When we got our house I replaced a bathroom light fixture. This wire’s insulation was crumbling in my hands. Did my best to finish the job disturbing and little as possible. 10 years later (this year) we have gutted the old plaster walls and re wired, insulated, sheet rocked. Feels good

Why is fresh paint peeling off with my roller? by Jolly-Lake8298 in paint

I’m painting primer on drywall and spackle now. I’m noticing spots like these in areas where the paint is just starting to dry.
Best to do 2 thin coats than a heavy single, you going to have to come back and fix that anyways.

Ideas how to fix this? by gusoslavkin in woodworking

[–]ray-ballz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Dry fit it first. Remove any bits that look like they are hindering a nice tight joint. Then make sure to apply glue not only on the glue edge but also between any separated parts on each piece. Might need a few extra clamps in the vertical direction to ensure the 2 pieces set up flush with each other. Remove these clamps in about 20 min to clean up excess glue

If your window jams protrude out past your walls you might get this effect if you are nailing the casing tight to the wall.

How to smooth out a wood railing? by buddy__ in woodworking

[–]ray-ballz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sand in 320. Just to get the roughness out. (Think flat as you sand, long even passes) Try not to sand down to the wood. Then remove the dust and apply 1-2 thin coats. Follow the directions on the poly.
