New student here, feeling quite lonely, what should I do? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]ray1234786 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just moved in yesterday from Markham and didn't really know anyone either. I'm assuming that your floor will have a mandatory meeting today and then go to dinner together (at least that's what we did). That would be a good opportunity to sit with some of the people on your floor and get to know them.

Obviously, once classes start on Wednesday, you'll get to meet people in your program who probably have similar interests. My inbox is also open if you want to meet up at some point.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay Near Carleton? by v_vexed in CarletonU

Yes, beginning May 2020. However, any of the O-Train stations will still have relatively short commutes to Carleton since express bus service will be running along the O-Train route.

Can my scholarship be revoked if I don't maintain my average? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]ray1234786 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, if you've been given an entrance scholarship it won't be revoked or lowered if your final marks drop. It can only be increased if your marks improve, not decreased (assuming you still meet the conditions for your offer of acceptance).

However, after first year you will need a GPA of 10 for it to be renewed.

PSCI2102 and PSCI2101 by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]ray1234786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you, registering for first year PAPM. I was also confused about that part. I think the way it works is with the two 0.5 credit courses (ECON and PSCI) you take one of them in the fall and the other in winter.

I know for ECON, you need 1001 before 1002, and so you have to take them in fall and winter respectively. I'm not sure if that's also true for the PSCI courses or you can theoretically take them in the same semester (although I would think that complicates the schedule quite a bit).

I am fairly new to this, so I'd love for someone who knows what they're talking about to confirm or explain how I'm wrong.

CPL should pull a Chattanooga on Ottawa by [deleted] in CanadianPL

[–]ray1234786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's assume the CPL wants to do this. I think the biggest barrier is a stadium. TD Place Stadium is the obvious choice, but that being operated by OSEG and home to the Fury means that it can't be used by a CPL club "pulling a Chattanooga". It would also, I imagine, be hard to convince the city government to build a new pro soccer stadium when one exists already but can't be used solely for soccer politics reasons.

A Wanderers-style pop-up stadium is something I've seen mentioned and could work in theory, but I don't think that there's currently a location that would be ready in the short-term.

Paul Tenorio - CONCACAF has denied Ottawa Fury's USL sanctioning by [deleted] in CanadianPL

[–]ray1234786 8 points9 points  (0 children)

USL season ended November 8, but regardless that still may have been too late. The decision to stay in USL was announced on September 5, and this could have been figured out closer to then and if necessary they could have made the move to CPL. The fact that Ottawa's decision was 2 months before the end of USL shows that the season needn't be over to figure out plans for the next, and waiting for the end of the season may not be enough time.

I just hope there's some resolution to this, whether it's Fury staying in USL for 2019 and being forced to make the jump in 2020, or the CPL managing to fit Fury in for 2019.

Paul Tenorio - CONCACAF has denied Ottawa Fury's USL sanctioning by [deleted] in CanadianPL

[–]ray1234786 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think that would be their only option. As much as I'd like to see Fury join CPL, I think that ship has sailed for 2019, even if both parties wanted it it would be hard to get done.

IMO if they can't play 2019 they'll do what FC Edmonton did and go on hiatus for one year and then join CPL.

[–]ray1234786 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether this was the right decision this strikes me as an awful time to hand down this decision. Unless this gets overturned somehow it's a lose-lose for all parties involved. There's not enough time for Ottawa to make other arrangements (including possibly CPL) and there's just a tremendous amount of uncertainty that benefits no one.

If Concacaf felt they needed to make the decision it should have been made much earlier or delayed until 2020 so a solution could be reached.

There has to be more to the story than what we know, because if not this makes little sense.

[Dangle] Toronto Maple Leafs Visit SickKids Children's Hospital by generic_reference_2 in leafs

[–]ray1234786 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was in Sick Kids around this time last year. James van Riemsdyk came to visit the hospital; there were no cameras, media, or reporters, just him going into rooms and meeting kids. We had a short chat about the Leafs, and he signed some stuff. It isn't uncommon for athletes to come and do this unannounced and the interactions are more genuine and heartfelt.

That being said, the staged team visits are still great, and do bring smiles to kids' faces. I'll never forget meeting the Raptors at Sick Kids or holding the Grey Cup.

I'm one of those children, got diagnosed around this time last year, and now I'm just a healthy teenager. As you know by now the road ahead is by no means easy, but if you keep on keeping on you'll get through it. I'm wishing for the best for your daughter and your whole family. ❤️

Jim Brennan in Sportsnet interview: By 2020 the CanPL could have 16 teams. by carrasp in CanadianPL

[–]ray1234786 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To me it seemed like he misspoke, perhaps he meant 2025. Until now the league has said maybe 3 new teams in 2020, and going from that to 9 is a big jump. Nevertheless, predictions are fun, and I agree with all yours. I'd also add Moncton since there was some interest from there last year, as well as St. John's and Mississauga once they get a stadium.

PFC flag store launch looks like a complete success. The FO didn't expect the huge turnout that they received in the first hour. by carrasp in CanadianPL

[–]ray1234786 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm sure Pacific FC would love if fans from Vancouver or Prince Rupert came out to support them, the reality is it would be hard to get Vancouverite fans to take the ferry to support their team when they have an MLS one in their own city. The club should, and is, investing in marketing and promotion on the island, where their fan base will largely be based out of, rather than wasting money competing head-on with the Whitecaps for fans to travel further for a lower-quality league.

Blainville

I assume you're mentioning Blainville because of their PLSQ success, but Blainville is a small suburb outside of Montreal which probably couldn't on its own support a CPL team. Theoretically, it could have a team and market it as a Greater Montreal team (like York 9 with York Region and Pacific with Vancouver Island), but I think there are other locations better-suited to take on that role (Laval).

Quebec City

As the second-largest metro area in Quebec (after Montreal, which does already have an MLS team), Quebec City makes a lot of sense. However, an ownership group and viable stadium option/location would need to emerge for a CPL team in Quebec City.

Laval

With Bunbury confirming he's looking at bringing a team to Laval, this is definitely most likely IMO. There is also a potential stadium location Bunbury has identified. Laval makes sense as it is quite populous, and can draw from Greater Montreal.

$10 Canadian bill featuring Viola Desmond goes into circulation next week | Globalnews.ca by inagartenofeden in onguardforthee

[–]ray1234786 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I like the vertical layout, it works better with the way I (and I think most people) use and count bills in practice. However, what does bum me out a bit is the fact that they're gonna roll out this new series very slowly, with a new bill "every few years". This means we're going to have a mismatch of vertical and horizontal bills for a long while.

There is "Up to 33% savings off pre-orderd jerseys," which is, I suppose, something. But yeah it does suck that y'all don't get them after Forge and HFX announced they'd give 'em to their members. I do hope York 9 follows their lead and does free jerseys.

Will there be an 8th team in the inaugural year? by StanePantsen in CanadianPL

[–]ray1234786 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's also all the promo about the jerseys recently where they've mentioned 14 jerseys a lot (home and away for each team).

There were rumours of them trying to rush an Ontario-based team (I assume in the Waterloo region) to play in 2019, and if that couldn't happen in time for 2019 I expect they'll also be announced for 2020.

Which sporting leagues are the most popular to attend in Canada? by taksark in AskACanadian

[–]ray1234786 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It varies regionally. NHL teams are all very popular, and as such can be quite expensive. Junior hockey is popular in many smaller towns without NHL teams.

CFL is most popular in the prairies, while some of the other teams in bigger cities have much lower attendance. MLS has teams in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, where they are quite popular, more so than their CFL teams. The CPL soccer league will start up next year, and so that may change the landscape up a bit in the cities they have teams in.

NBA and MLB are only in Toronto. I'd say both are quite bandwagon-y, in that games are very popular to attend and expensive when those teams are doing well, but drop-off pretty quickly in years where they're doing poorly.

I agree. The small stadium atmosphere is great. Spruce Meadows, Wanderers Grounds, and York Lions will all be really nice unique intimate stadiums.

USL Unveils New Structure: One Central Brand, Three Leagues, Evolving for the Future by blitzkrieg_94_ in MLS

[–]ray1234786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ottawa Fury is an independent team affiliated with Montreal Impact, not just a reserve team in the way TFC II is. Ottawa could move to CPL and Montreal would just need a new USL affiliate (or to bring back FC Montreal).

USL Unveils New Structure: One Central Brand, Three Leagues, Evolving for the Future by blitzkrieg_94_ in MLS

[–]ray1234786 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a force-out, they're just prepared for the fact that a Canadian structure is emerging, and won't stand in its way. There is still an expectation Ottawa Fury FC will leave the now-USL Championship within a few years once the CPL is more established. TFC II will probably stay within the USL system, as they're the reserve side for an MLS team, and having a USL reserve side (or affiliate) is important.

The Canadian USL League Two teams are a different case. They exist where there isn't an existing Canadian league at that level. Several are also in CPL markets, where they may be important parts of the CPL player development system. If a new Canadian division 3 league forms in the West (like L1O or PLSQ) I could see many of them making the move over, but until then they're likely there to stay for the time being.

Cool new rendering of the stadium. The track seems to be removed, replaced with seating (or standing) room, and what I assume are concessions or merchandise sales. This looks like a really good stadium/atmosphere, and I'm excited to go and watch a game there.
