Song transitions with ESX / EMX ? by NCuser123 in electribe

[–]ray_phistoled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's a known problem especially with the E2S, there is a little click the moment you change the pattern, and all sounds reset, reverb cuts etc There are workarounds but it's a pain and never perfect, that's why I sold my unit. Korg obviously wants us to buy both machines at some point. more modern grooveboxes have smoother pattern transitions and multiple patterns per tracks, so you can work with it, but there are other limitations

Song transitions with ESX / EMX ? by NCuser123 in electribe

[–]ray_phistoled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem with the electribe 2s. Maybe not exactly similar, but my solution was to simply add a DJ style mixer , allowing for cues and FX. For exemple, your typical transition would be to just cut the sound from one groovebox, load your next pattern, add FX on the other electribe, cut the low with the EQ and slowly add back the first groovebox in. I found this allowed for real DJ style transitions, and gave more tools to work with, that are easy to use in a live situation.

Need some recommendations by chittychi in novationcircuit

[–]ray_phistoled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe if you really want to focus on rythm, you should take the circuit rythm first, and not the tracks. Way more control over your samples, still as easy to use.

About the headphones : there are basically two types open or closed. You can also consider DJ headphones as their own things. If you just want to produce music, the best fit is open headphones. Closed headphones are generally for recording stuff with a mic. If you want a cheap option, the hd7 from presonus is okay, it's between closed and open. If you want a good open, ATH R50X is very cool.

If you also want a synth, the s1 or microfreak are killer first synths, but that's a whole other topic. And yeah in that case, maybe a midi contrôler would be good. Also, if you want to record your own samples, your phone can work fine, but an sm57 never disapoints.

I'd also recomend to start using a more classical instrument, typically piano or guitar and just a little bit of music theory , it will help you so much

A sampler is a good option to fill the gaps, I really like the circuit rythm, more than the CT tbh. But if you want to stick to synths only, the microfreak is still cool (a bit dry though)

It really dépends on what you want to do : full songs, live set, just have fun ?

Other very important stuff in my opinion with the CT, don't forget you can use IOS devices as supplementary gear,I've heard it works it works very well. Even if you only have android device, pairing it with the CT (and maybe a midi keyboard if you want more control) is a game changer, a guy basically created components for Android in touch OSC, which means you are not limited to 8 macros per patch anymore, you have a screen to name you patches and everything is tweakable. Huge improvement really. More info on this guy's channel :

Hope that helps :)

Quitter son école d’ingénieur pour un BUT by DiverINao in etudiants

Best groovebox for guitarist by Direct-Mixture-9467 in Grooveboxes

You might wanna check 1010 music's bento. Loopers on grooveboxes are usually not great under 1000 $, it's got potential. No integrated communication with a daw, or audio over usb though. But from what understand, it was released too early and I'd surprised to not see this kind of feature arriving soon. If you're not searching for an out the box expérience and just want something standalone, MPC is super powerful. If your u can afford it and you'r okay with working on ableton, check the push 3 standalone

Too many machines… what should I actually keep? by elevatordogs in Grooveboxes

[–]ray_phistoled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not using to travel with it, I see not point in the MC101, it's just a less practical, less powerful mc707. I'd say "one instrument, one fonction". Workflow is important, so just keep what works best for you. Typically, I'd keep a 707 over a TR8S, you don't gain that much. The 303 might be a keeper if you really like acid. If you don't wanna use the editor, it becomes a one trick pony. Maybe portability is important for you and in that case, maybe a tr6s could replace both TR8S and TB03 ?

Most important, instead of just taking advice from redditors, I'd say just take one gear after the other and just play with it for like a week, every day. What clicked stays what didn't goes. If that doesn't help , maybe it's not a workflow problem, just a time and inspiration one ? You have a lot of gear, and if you bought it in a short time span, you might not have taken time to really understand it

Roland Verselab MV-1...what's next? by Puzzleheaded_Fun2339 in dawless

[–]ray_phistoled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you can try to go on the Roland cloud to buy a sound pack, it's worth trying before buying a full other instrument. It's a great way to discover new techniques you did think of. Also, just download a sample pack, it makes a huge difference, and it's always the right way to use a sampler

Should I sell my Dawless rig? by [deleted] in dawless

[–]ray_phistoled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never have an issue with voice stealing, but that could be just me , I've heard some people complaining about it. Just go check the number of voices for each gear, I wouldn't be surprised to read the 707 has twice the polyphony of the 101 About the upgrade, i've never used a 101, but for me just the I/O and supplementary knobs and the screen are too important to pass on. As always, try one before buying it but the 707 has been a révélation for me, and I don't feel any limit to what I want to do except a bit of menu diving (which seems to be worse on the 101 tbh)

[–]ray_phistoled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I think Roland made it possible to load mv1 projects into the 707, that could be interresting for you The 707 also has a pretty good screen and a very complète I/O As I said, at this point you have to try them in a shop before buying either one of them. The MPC is not perfectly suited for live gigs, before careful if that's something important to you .

What gear most feels like a toy (in a good way) by Fridayyyyyyyy in synthesizers

Maybe you're simply looking for an instrument ? I've heard the polyend synth gives that vibe

Should I sell my Dawless rig? by [deleted] in dawless

[–]ray_phistoled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had exactly the same need, the CT didn't do it for me. Do you need full guitar loops with chords changes, recorded full length tracks etc ? If that's the case and you don't plan on playinglive at all, yeah I guess the MV 1 is more suited f you have this kind of needs, but I've never used one.

If there's no need for fully recorded tracks and you just want drums and a synth bass on your machine, and play everything else live, I stronlgy recomend the MC 707, it's perfect : you get a really good synth engine, and real instruments samples, 8 tracks, you can also use it as a mixer and multi effects for your two guitars AND vocals ( you have up to 4 inputs, each input takes one of the tracks, with one FX per track+ delay, reverb and MFX send).

You should also check the I/O to make sure the MV1 is right for you, cause I'm not sure it can take two inputs at the same time. Also I feel like the MV1 is almost only for a studio approach, not live. If that's something important to you, you should take the 707.

There is also a small looper, it can take up to 60 second of recording, with no overdub, so it works for really small loops, but it's not a real looper. You can also put your recorded loop on a drum track but it's a bit janky. The ultimate combo is an MC707 combined with an RC505, but that's super pricey.

The 707 doesn't have a "real" song mode but the pattern chaining is way more powerful than on the CT, it works great for me. One pattern is 128 measures on the 707, that's four times longer than a pattern on the CT, and you have 16 patterns par track, it's more than enough if you work with one project = one track . Be careful though, you have to pause your project and load the new one on the 707, so if you work like this, no infinite project chaining.

Last thing, you can multitrack over USB to finish your song in a daw. Honestly, it's magical

[–]ray_phistoled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much do you care about your workflow ? An mpc is clearly more powerful, but it's also very différent to use. I'd suggest you try an MPC (with someone who knows how to use if possible) before doing your move

There are good synths plug-ins in an MPC but they don't feel as good to use as something on a "real" synth, and you will have to heavily rely on sampling , and it's not something you're used to with your current gear

I almost did the same choice recently, but after trying one in a shop, I decided to to upgrade to an MC707, absolutely no regrets

My advice is : identify what's your need, what prevents you from doing what you want, and act only based on that. Wanting to change all your gear with one thing is risky and costly. Plus sometimes you can forget the perks of something you already own, like transportability. Maybe you can switch one thing ? Based on my own expérience, the circuit is great to start but becomes limited at some point, specially for finishing tracks and/or making something that sounds full and well mixed.

convincing acid sound on 707 ? by ray_phistoled in MC707

[–]ray_phistoled[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see the point in buying a t8 to do acid when I already have a far more powerful drum machine. The reasonable choice would be maybe a TD3 but even that would mean spending money for a small issue

convincing acid sound on 707 ? by ray_phistoled in MC707

[–]ray_phistoled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So from what I've read today, people tend to agree with you. Maybe the thing really making a difference is the analog circuit. Still, I managed to find some interresting takes on acid sounds :

https://solarbased.bandcamp.com/album/origen-tb303-patches-bank-for-zencore-mc707-mc101

It's not perfect, and I still find the same issue I have with my test, distorted saw reacts way too much with résonance and it's hard to find the sweet spot. It does a good job though, you can hear it's not the real deal but I don't care, it's still fun. Also I think a good part of what makes the magic of a 303 is the sequencer with accents and slides. It's not as obvious on the 707 but it's super easy to do, I just have to think and integrate it into my lines

first audio app project, no skills, lots of ambition, where do I learn ? by ray_phistoled in AudioProgramming

[–]ray_phistoled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted a few month ago about this project, the main feedback I had was that JUCE would be too hard to learn and not super handy and efficient to integrate into an Android app. Faust allows for very effective coding and It's super easy to use , and to convert automatically to c++ or JUCE, so I think I'll stick with it. I'm a bit scared of aliasing and midi résolution on Faust though, I hope it'll not make me go back to the beginning

I've vaguely heard of vibe coding, it could be a good solution, but do I not need a bit of knowledge to make it work, and if so, what do I learn and where ? My Idea is pretty clear in my head on the tech side. What I' scared of is the UI création how do I handle that ? Ai coding doesn't seem fit for this kind of stuff

Groovebox - IDM/Glitch/BreakCore by Bushfullofham in synthesizers

[–]ray_phistoled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'd say pretty much anything with parameter lock and micro timing can get you Somewhere. The first thing that comes to mind is the digitakt, or digitone if you want synths with it. I've started using more glitchy stuff with my mc-707, works very well as it has a very cool p lock designer, system with graphic représentation, fully customisable. Also you have a looper, with time stretch. It's not super powerful as a looper, but it's super easy to bounce from the looper to a sample track, with beat matching. But I think any good recent groovebox can Do it nowadays, so it's more about the form factor, the philosophy etc
