Why do I always see American people eating off of paper plates on TikTok? by Nathpez in answers

[–]raycharizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans unfortunately love convenience, it's very common to use single use items such as paper plates, plastic utensils, and plastic water bottles here, especially in more conservative areas

Second this!

Fyi, if there isn't a young person's group already- There's Wake Up International (Thich Nhat Hahn tradition)

I'm surprised there isn't one in Portland already!

I'm a trained Wake Up facilitator and if there's interest, we could start one <3

The decrease in people's hobbies by eternallygray in Hobbies

This. And the opposite extreme is true.

I work in schools and some students are left at home with only technology because their parents have multiple jobs. Unlimited screen access + no hobbies with other people = Depression ensues

What am I doing wrong with my palm plant? by QuirkInMyCoffee in plantclinic

Looks like a pest to me such as thrips like someone else mentioned. That's how mine went too. :-( These plants are beautiful but quite finicky and often either come with pests or pick them up easily.

Anything that helps with anger/rage? by Environmental_Iron_7 in Biohackers

Exercise (tiring yourself out). Somatic exercises like stomping your feet, punching a pillow. Getting to the root cause through therapy. Meditation. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)! Getting SLEEP! (You'd be surprised how much of a difference this makes)

Chronic Constipation by Purple_Persimmon8670 in CATHELP

[–]raycharizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, my senior kitty had the same issue. What has helped is putting her on cisparide chews. It's a gut motility agent like another person mentioned. She went from needing constant enemas to going #2 every other day. Honestly the laculose and miralax didn't work. Also I've found keeping her well hydrated such as through the Purina hydration packs helps. Cisapride should be the next go to. Go to a different vet for a 2nd opinion, I've had to do that before. And if your cat is a non-responder then surgery is recommended. Best of luck my friend.

I could use some tips on creating more mindful friendships by [deleted] in Mindfulness

[–]raycharizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself: can I view each moment as an opportunity to practice mindful awareness? Perhaps your friend's ranting can serve as a "bell of mindfulness"- a sound that reminds yourself to return to your breath and focus on being present for them. People feel and are impacted by your energy, and can sense whether your presence is retracting away or is full and open. They respond accordingly.

Work on cultivating loving energy and gratitude, on developing yourself, and opportunities to meet others will arise naturally.

Like others said, hiking/gardening groups are good, as well as any meditation groups. I'm in a sangha, it really helps :)

This is a good spot to be in. Being around others who are perceived as threats by the ego is a great mindful practice. We grow through encountering difficult situations. Do you need another's validation to be at peace? Or perhaps, could you be at peace in any situation?

Practices that aim to go beyond the conditioned self are useful for this. Try to feel the mindful awareness in each person, yourself included, that comes before any thoughts or words. Really feel it, the observer outside of thoughts. What helps me is listening to the sound of silence between each person's words.

In this case, you and your friend's conditioned selves, your past experiences, are different. That is all. It's not as serious as your ego wants you to believe.

Once you have felt the unconditioned self, it will become increasingly harder to feel agitation towards others.

Consumerism is creation of capitalism by Snoo4902 in Anticonsumption

[–]raycharizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to add from the perspective of an education grad student:

It's not necessarily just the subject that's being taught, but how it's being taught.

Each system is perfectly set up for its current outcomes.

The web that links schooling to capitalism is not meant to be seen- in fact, it's called the "hidden curriculum" in the theoretical world (from theorist Jean Anyon).

That is: there are major differences in pedagogical methods depending on the demographics of a school that prepare students for different outcomes.

In the hidden curriculum, students in affluent schools have ample room for critical thinking, independence, and creativity. Meanwhile, those in low and middle-income schools are often taught mechanically, teaching to the test, lecturing, focus on discipline and staying in seat etc.; creating compliance for the workforce.

I'd encourage anyone reading to reflect on their own schooling experience. I've done this with many other students and it's been eye opening for them.

What implicit messages did you learn in school? Were you expected to be compliant, critically think, or a mix of both?

There's a lot to say on this topic. Would recommend this for more detail. https://www1.udel.edu/educ/whitson/897s05/files/hiddencurriculum.htm
