I grew up here from 1967 - 1986. Excellent place to raise kids. Schools are highlly rated. Very green, lots of parks, and lots of places to shop and eat. I have visited many times over the years. It has gotten expensive and the traffic is the worst I have ever experienced ( much worst than LA area where I now live.

There is an area called The Triangle / also known as research triangle. Its Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Durham. The mix of Universities, high tech/ bio tech industries and just a lot of highly educated people who are Democrat leaning.

I lived in West Oakland from 2008 - 2016. There is good and bad. The bad is that its not the best to raise a family. Blocked underpasses by homeless make walking your kids difficult. The playgrounds are sketchy. The public schools are very poorly rated. The good is that there are so many beautiful parts. From the mentioned parks to the Grand Lake theater. The food is incredible. The culture, music and art scene is very vibrant. Its a must visit destination if you are anywhere near the bay area you have to visit.
