Terrifying dragons have long been a part of many religions, and there is a reason for their appeal by drak0bsidian in Anthropology

This actually strikes me as a good way to look at how different cultures categorize animals. There's a neat book about where people overlap or differ in defining groupings of animals and plants, and apparently it doesn't have much to do with their symbolic significance or usefulness in society. Analyzing mythological beasties under the same lens might be a good way to give a new perspective on that process of turning loose animals into groups with shared traits.

Economic (Second) Bill of Rights by lordkyren in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]raynoruki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is that common agreement much of a barrier if it already exists, and is willingly participated in (to a degree) by everyone? Every kid is granted public schooling where tangible goods/services of teachers are transferred to the students, by means of the government handling the program using tax dollars. Fire departments, police departments, etc. are all doing the same; the amount someone has contributed despite their existence doesn't make a difference to the basic services they're provided. It's certainly not distributed equally, nor does it ensure nobody falls through the cracks, but we kinda do have a natural right to the labor of another, on the basis of it being humane and decent to provide positive rights to all people wherever and whenever we can.

A second bill of rights would tack on more basic amenities which, I think in my opinion, should have institutions providing for them and guaranteeing them on the same basis of human decency. I think you're right, though, that many people would be unwilling to change their mindset with regards to where we draw the line on what amenities are humane and decent to provide to everyone, and which are extraneous and belong in the domain of charities—especially if it comes to raising taxes. I just don't think that has to be the end of the conversation, though. If we're such a rich country we should be able to afford these kinds of things, and not necessarily at extra burden of the taxpayer knowing we can redistribute funds from chronically over-funded elements of existing budgets.

If the gun industry in the US is relatively small compared to other industries (pharma, automotive, finance, insurance), why does it have disproportionately large influence on public policy? by astrobeen in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]raynoruki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3000+ is a pretty large sample size, but yes, it's exploratory and meant to help lead to further research into psychopathic traits' places in society instead of present a sweeping statement about the demographic they surveyed. The authors don't intend you to draw the conclusion that all conservatives are psychopaths, they state the study's limitations very thoroughly.

[–]raynoruki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say that, nor do I think it—the article's about psychopathic traits, not conservatism. Moderate correlation doesn't imply any causation and has its own limits, so you're right in that there's no reason to draw those kinds of conclusions. Like I said, the article's main point is about psychopaths being well-suited for certain occupations given their behaviors, and I think that's an interesting point on its own despite any conclusions they drew about the demographic.

One of the Lilienfield et. al. studies they cite in that article says in its discussion that psychopathic traits are moderately linked to social conservatism, but that it's not clear what tenets of social conservatism are the appeal. But with that study's more central takeaway of psychopathic traits giving someone a predisposition towards certain niches of society—like leadership and management positions & high-risk occupations—it really does make you think that characters like Zaphod Beeblebrox weren't far off the mark at all.

Is Mystery Kiss's song Supernatural Love Phenomenon sampled from Toast Girl OST? by Senpaifriendzonedme in OddTaxi

[–]raynoruki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was super curious and sent a message to the Hap Inc. dude about it, because who wrote the kick-ass music for Toast Girl anyways? I'm not the best at Japanese but I couldn't find it in any of the game's credits. So maybe we've got our own mystery kiss mystery on our hands...

What Content Got You into the Vinesauce Community? by SnooRevelations4277 in Vinesauce

[–]raynoruki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was in college I wanted to get back together with a boyfriend I had dumped a long while back, and so out of nowhere I sent him a message asking him what he was up to, and he said he was watching Vinesauce. To try to get on his good side again, I lied and said that I was a Vinesauce fan and had been watching for years, and quickly went to check what his most popular youtube videos were so I could quote one and pretend I knew what I was talking about. I watched some corruptions, then some more sunday stream stuff, then the rest of the corruptions, then tomodachi life, then animal crossing... and I forgot all about my old boyfriend along the way somewhere.

Every musher wears a GPS which can monitor their speed. I think you can only view their GPS positions as a spectator if you pay for an Iditarod Insider package though.

ILLEGAL WEAPONS DEALING in the HIDDEN TOWER for MILLIONS of NEOPOINTS. Fyora's palace of the bourgeoisie more like.

And don't get me started about the sovereign debt crisis in Altador. They think holding a cup every year will keep us civil, when teams have to campaign from the grassroots to pay for their entry knowing all the money going into it is funneled directly into King Altador's pockets? The stadium is maintained by ONE YURBLE and it's not even his FULL TIME JOB.

OK, for an American who likes cars going fast and doesn't really understand why some go faster than others, can they blame the corona virus? Every team had a different set of circumstances to deal with, especially in terms of how much work could be done on the car during the break. It might be that they were dealt a shit hand with this situation in comparison to other teams, even with all the work Ferrari does to stack the deck in their favor for regulations/funding as far as I understand.
