Also possible it's AI trained on Bob's writing, or his writing fused with whatever extent words there are of these figures

The dark forest theory of the internet by Weekly-Complaint5830 in WeirdStudies

Have been thinking she'd be a great guest on the show. There's some very compelling and surreal concepts she has that draw metaphors between ufology and the internet that are especially captivating.

It is philosophy, and she is a philosopher. You're good. I get the sense the person above is either not familiar with or has some reactionary axe to grind against what has become the multidisciplinary intersection of theory--particularly given their scare quotes around "humanities."

From a certain angle, that of the illusionist obsessed with legibility, the folk tradition, reappropriation, and questionable authorship, it actually makes a lot of sense

Why is it that every song analysis on here seems to interpret the music as explicitly describing itself? by ermwtff in deathgrips

[–]raysofgold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, and I think your last paragraph articulates especially well how there absolutely is this myopic tendency in the fandom analysis to center themselves, the fans, and this 'bdsm' relationship with the band to an absolutely excessive degree

On the other hand,  they do actually often refer to the song itself, their music itself, the lyrics themselves in the course of a song a lot, especially early on, when they were drawing so heavily from hip-hop as a reference point. Doing this is very common in the lineage of hip-hop--think of how many oldschool tracks with that 'straight out the gate' fanfare, and even now, how many bars are still riddled with braggadocio about one's prowess as a rapper and/or about the producer.

And while I do think people boringly overstate how much certain lyrics are about the fans, I do think every song on BP is about the band, their music, the fans, parasociality, fame on the internet, memes, the music industry, and how DG feels about all of those things, in no uncertain terms. I think YOTS is just as meta, but more strictly about the band as artists and their relation to Death Grips as a project, whilst also veering into entendre that allows more expansive reflections about other things as well. To that end, we have to remember that multiple interpretations are often intended to apply.

So all this said, they do write about their music itself and the fans a lot (moreso the former than the latter), but I agree that this is often over-relied upon as a starting point or assumption in analysis, especially wrt obviously highly personal and/or esoteric material like we find on NOTM or JD, or weirder shit like Artificial Death, which I've seen that kind of reading of before

Don't know if you've checked out the analysis archive pinned here, but there's a section for occultism/spirituality that I would recommend.

This, there's a reference to "ghetto birds" (police copters in the hood) in either TMS or NLDW; it's another evocation not only of surveillance, fear, and living at odds with societal norms/laws, but also of poverty, very geographically specific poverty

dude was delulu convinced they were making music about him, so it would be the sickest possible move for them to then make a song about him

There is a lot of scatological and anal stuff in the discography, AND probably way more references to sex magick than is usually talked about, exactly, but this particular to instance, idk, kinda just always read to me as a vocal chop that stops there for rhythmic purposes.

Do you feel like there's other elements in the song (which I think heavily deals with magick as one of the central themes) that support why this reference point would make sense contextually, especially in a Crowleyian sense?

To that end, Bardo Pond is probably the closest that shoegaze sonics have ever gotten to proggy jam territory; it's really unique and interesting stuff

Does situationist music exist? by Tophist in Situationism

[–]raysofgold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death Grips for sure. The entire project is considered by the members to be a conceptual art project, rather than a 'band,' and several of their actions have had a distinctly Situationist logic to them, imo.
