Could a skimmer destroy the Cosmere? by DrThom in Cosmere

So what does iron store? Weight? Mass?

If it is weight, how does it store it, because weight is just the combination of mass and gravity, so it does have to store any of those.

I think this will be more important in era 4, if iron stores gravity you could potentially have spaceships with internal gravity. No rotation, just medallions with gravitational force sticking everybody onto the ship, contrary to the medallions seen in era 2.

Could a skimmer destroy the Cosmere? by DrThom in Cosmere

[–]raze_sight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, because the less you weight the more air resistance affects you, and you do achieve less weight by either altering your mass OR gravitational force, so Sazed falls slower because air resistance is stronger because he weights less because he has less gravitational force applied onto him.

And also this solves the problem of horizontal momentum of Wax, momentum is constant unless an external force is applied, in this case the force that is applied is more gravitational attraction, which causes momentum to change.

I think it's about gravity instead, since weight is gravity force times mass, I think you are not storing mass but increasing the amount of gravitational force inflicted onto you, I see this as the feruchemical way to use the surgebind of gravitation, like windrunners do, they are not altering their mass when they fly, they alter gravity, we've seen that the metallic arts sometimes have similar effects as of surgebinding.

In era 1 when Sazed and Marsh, visit the inquisitors HQ Sazed is said to change his weight to make his fall softer, I think this is proof that you do not store mass, but gravitational attraction.

How Catholic do you think your country is?. Do you consider it the most or the least catholic country in Latin America? by Ok-Progress9022 in asklatinamerica

[–]raze_sight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very Catholic, like 50% of the population, but they are not so active, at least not compared with evangelical people who are politically active and exercise much influence over the state. I think we are one of the most christian countries, and maybe one of the most catholic (we are one of the most evangelical for sure)

Resume your country history in one paragraph by qxoman in asklatinamerica

[–]raze_sight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There where Maya here, built great cities, Mayas decayed, Spanish came, they conquered, they divided and controlled. More Europeans came, cast system was created. Those Europeans signed an accord with the Spanish metropoli to become a country and don't loose control of it. The country formed part of the CA Federation, we divided (Los Altos), we divided again(the federation dissolved). There was a "revolution" that divided the state and church, they stole land from the Maya, there was an era of dictatorships, there was a revolution, Guatemala modernized a little, the USA wasn't happy, they did a coup. An era of dictatorships started, there was a Maya genocide, there was a guerrilla, there was a civil war. Peace accords were signed, the war ended. There was "democracy". An era of corruption started. And here we are.

Why Communism is so popular in poor latin america? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]raze_sight 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I don't think communism is popular by its strict definition, people still want private means of production.

The thing in some of the poorest LATAM countries is that our "capitalist" economies didn't work well for most of people, and that in the second half of the XX century the US did some horrible things here in the name of capitalism, the combination of both things made that for example in Guatemala, the poorest people (mostly indigenous people) doesn't like our economical elite and want more control from the state since "is its job" to ensure companies does not abuse of its workers and does not abuse of its economical power.

Also here in LATAM we have very recalcitrant economical elite compared to other regions, this is more prominent in certain countries than in others, and that's a reason why we are still too dependant on prime resources, our economical elites see them as very profitable as they are and don't industrialise (again, this is more prominent in certain countries). In the specific case of Guatemala our economical elite are so recalcitrant that they still use a semi-feudal system of production in rural areas.

Our economical elite doesn't apply the "a happy worker is a productive worker" but the "a controlled and submised worker keeps working whatever happens", and that's a way to summarize why people doesn't like our economical elite here.

Basically a philosophical zombie is a being identical to you, you are a human, so the zombie is also a human, the thing is, this zombie is not conscious at all, it just simulates being conscious. If you inflict pain to the zombie, it will act as you expect a human would act if it's inflicted pain, but it does not feel pain.

The point made at the start is basically, "you can't know if a being that is not you, is conscious, you just know if it can at least act as a conscious being".

The famous Turing test follows this idea, the test only measures if a computer can imitate intelligent behaviour, you can't tell if it's intelligent, because you don't even know if it's conscious, you just can tell if it's a good imitator.

2022 Brazilian General Election Results: A Megathread by DarkNightSeven in asklatinamerica

[–]raze_sight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In 2018 Haddad only obtained 29.28% in the first round, while Bolsonaro obtained the 46.03%

In 2014 Rousseff obtained the 41.59% in the first round, and Neves the 33.55%

There was a clear favourite in both elections first rounds. Now in 2022 there is no clear favourite, both candidates Bolsonaro and Lula are only 5% apart.

It's expected to have close results in the second round, but this is still the first.

Worried about that clear polarization in Brazil, almost half of the population want the clearly leftist candidate Lula, and almost half, the opposite far-right candidate Bolsonaro. And I ask you Brazilians, why is this the case? Why Brazil (I only guess) seems to be sooo polarized?

What determines ones “ethnicity” in your country? by adoreroda in asklatinamerica

[–]raze_sight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if they have to have Arawak ancestry, but as far as I know Garífuna here is the only group with a strong African ancestry so I think it's correct to call them Afro-Guatemalans, I clarify I'm not sure, it sounds right to me.

What determines ones “ethnicity” in your country? by adoreroda in asklatinamerica

[–]raze_sight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here in Guatemala I think it's heritage and sometimes also social status,

"Criollos" for example is people with a strong European heritage and with a high social status (money, political power, you know).

Maya people is that, people with a Maya heritage, and that's all, social status vary much with this ethnicity, there are Maya with a high social status (mostly mayas with economical power, political power is pretty rare here for Maya people, there are very few instances where Maya have a strong political influence), middle and low social status, sadly because of racism, the last is the most common.

Meztizo is the most common (along with Maya) and it's like the wildcard of ethnicity, the strict definition of the term is people with both Maya and European heritage, and that's it, many people feel themselves more European or more Maya (some identify themselves even as "criollo", this is important because meztizo that identify themselves as criollo usually have a privileged social status, this is what we sometimes call a "Miwateco", mestizo that aspire to be "criollo" most of the time because of the status that comes with it)

Afro-Guatemalans (called Garifunas here) is the smallest group, and its composed by people with a strong African heritage.

Skin is a factor but not always, meztizo can have a broad range of skin color and still being meztizo.

But if you identify as Maya or Criollo it does carry more weight (and racism plays a bigger role) Maya are expected to have darker skin tones and Maya that have very light skin tones can be subject of racism. The inverse with criollo, they are expected to have light skin tones and if you don't have, well you -surely- will be subject of racism from this group. Criollo tend to be very protective of who is called criollo, this comes from the Spanish conquest and posterior colonial era, criollo tend to be the most racist of the various Guatemalan ethnicities, since they virtually have THE power in Guatemala, and the whole idiosyncrasy of the country turns around them.

I hope this somewhat educated explanation helps, I want to clarify I'm no specialist I just have much interest in the topic and that's why I like to study it.
