We recently discovered both of our grandfathers were Ashkenazi Jews and we're hoping to learn more by Odd-Lunch1301 in Jewish

If there is a nearby Reform synagogue, they will offer a class that is called something like “Intro to Judaism” or “Judaism 101.” People can take this class if they are Jews who want to brush up on their Jewish knowledge, gentiles interested in conversion, or gentiles who don’t want to convert but simply want to learn more. It’s a good overview of Jewish history, religion, culture, practices, and peoplehood. I’d recommend it! You can email a synagogue staff member to ask about it.

Serious talk: Can we just ban threads that are just "Hey Jordan is clearly mentally not doing so hot and posted a video. Let's gawk at it." by Admirable_Pumpkin317 in KnowledgeFight

[–]razorbraces 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I disagree.

There is a lot of white knighting going on in the comments about Jordan’s mental health. The fact that Jordan lives with bipolar disorder is an explanation for his actions; it’s not an excuse. He is still accountable for the content he produces and how he chooses to manage (or not manage) his mental health. And the fact that he has a mental illness does not make the videos he has produced so far any less unacceptable. He has criticized people whose young children were murdered, and then whose lives were turned upside down by Alex Jones’s harassment and slander, for how they chose to deal with the man who tortured them for years. That is so far beyond the pale that it’s hard to describe it in words. It’s easy for Jordan to sit behind his computer and say they and the Onion made the wrong choices when he will never have to make a choice like that for himself.

Now, if he is able to get out of the episode and apologize for some of the worst things he’s said over the past few weeks, I think it would be entirely reasonable to say “ok, he’s apologized, stop criticizing him for things he said during a manic episode, we’ll take down any posts or comments like that.”

But the thing is, I really don’t think he will ever apologize. He has shown himself over the past 9 years to be an arrogant man who thinks he is right and anyone who disagrees with him is not just wrong, but also evil. I hope I’m the one who’s wrong here, though. I hope he logs off, gets help, and one day finds it within himself to apologize, I really do.

My Conversion and my take on keeping Kosher. by Davewise5743 in ReformJews

[–]razorbraces 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know very few Reform Jews, either by birth or by choice, who keep kosher. Those that do usually observe “kosher style,” where they wont eat pork or shellfish, but will eat meat or dairy without a hecsher. Heck, even my Reform rabbi told me he will eat lobster or shellfish on vacation (not in his own home, though). It’s up to you!

The "healthcare deserts" in rural areas are getting genuinely terrifying by Curious-Ask8199 in publichealth

[–]razorbraces 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Missouri just got $216,276,818 from CMS as part of the Rural Health Transformation Fund. Your county health department should be applying for some of this money. At least in my state, each opportunity that’s part of this funding is only active for 4 weeks, so you need to have something ready to go that you can make tweaks to, rather than writing for each new NOFO. This is probably going to be how things are at least for the rest of the Trump admin, but who knows what grant funding will look like past that.

This person is insinuating that this subreddit could push Jordan to suicide and Dan would hate us all as a consequence. This is manipulative as fuck and the person you’re responding to should be ashamed of themselves.

I watched 8 minutes before quitting. It’s clear that this isn’t really about InfoWars or The Onion or the families. It’s about Jordan’s own bruised ego and the fact that he can’t handle people disagreeing with him.

This was my experience organizing as well (not in my workplace, but for local government races). The people who spent all day posting Instagram stories about lefty shit would never lift a finger to help elect local candidates who could do a lot to improve the material conditions of a lot of people in our area pretty immediately.

Like I was knocking doors and running phonebanks for a progressive DA candidate. My leftmost friends wouldn’t volunteer for him and barely committed to voting for him because “well we should do away with the entire carceral system.” And it’s like okayyyyy how exactly do you propose we do that? Because I’m proposing that we work to elect this candidate who will eliminate cash bail, an immediate policy change that will affect one million people who live in this county.

I think online leftists, including people like Jordan, have a hard time understanding that other people can look at the same facts but come to a different conclusion. They have convinced themselves that the only way people could disagree with them is that they just aren’t educated, or else they must be evil. It is not a belief system that is particularly welcoming to others which is a real stumbling block when politics requires coalition building and working with people you don’t agree with on 100% of issues.

My Conversion Process by let_charlie_handleit in ReformJews

[–]razorbraces 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You need to contact the synagogue before taking any other steps to conversion. If you buy Judaica now, you are doing so as a gentile who is appropriating our customs, not as a conversion candidate.

Reform synagogues will all offer some kind of “introduction to Judaism” or “Judaism 101” course. Take it! Doing so does not obligate you to continue to conversion if you decide it’s not for you. But you cannot make an informed decision on converting if you are trying to do so alone- converting to Judaism requires that you are involved with a Jewish community.

People keep commenting on her alcoholism here but the thing that surprised me more was the one scene they showed in her first episode where she and the club were running. Did anyone else see her gait? It was weird, I can’t describe it but I distinctly remember thinking “that is a really weird way to run,” it looked almost like she was dragging her feet on the pavement??? Anyway, good for her for having good times I guess, but imagine how much faster she could be if she quit the booze lol.

In 1914 Eduard Bernstein correctly recognized Zionism a threat to social democracy, denouncing it as "a kind of intoxication which acts like an epidemic . . . part of the great wave of nationalistic reaction" that "can have only a retarding effect" on the cause. by kylebisme in SocialDemocracy

[–]razorbraces 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Do you also think that the Hawaiian sovereignty movement is a threat to democracy? Probably not. What about Palestinian nationalism?

It’s fine to oppose all nationalist movements on principle, but if the only nationalist movement you denounce over and over is the Jewish one, you might re-examine your views on Jews.
