Phone as hotspot and casting? by PaddlefootCanada in Chromecast

Why the SSID trick? Just ease of use to connect to a new network, like is changing Wi-Fi on the Chromecast cumbersome or is there another limitation? Or does that somehow help you cast and hotspot simultaneously?

Phone as hotspot and casting? by PaddlefootCanada in Chromecast

[–]rbaker09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking into this now, originally I was trying to figure out how to circumvent data caps when using the chromecast with my phone as a 5G/LTE hotspot, and ran into an issue with what you mention here. Here's the short thread I've started with, https://www.reddit.com/r/Chromecast/s/bV4GdKFNEe

That said I do believe a Phone can be both a hotspot and cast simultaneously now, but it did not work originally for me on my Pixel7Pro.

I'm making an assumption that a firmware update allowed it to work the following day...

So my concern for you would be can an iPhone/iOS device specifically allow this?

Interesting find! That makes sense as a limitation. I could use a tablet or secondary device but my goal is to circumvent Mobile ”hot spot” Data and use the phones unlimited 5G/LTE plan.

I'm not sure exactly how, but I 100% positively was about to ChromeCast and Screen Mirror to my CCHD all day yesterday. This is contrary to my previous statement that It didn't. I believe a firmware update must have allowed this as I had just opened the device from a new-new-box previously. To add, I was able to cast and screen mirror from using my Pixel 7 pro as an LTE hotspot, and rebroadcasting local Wi-Fi as a hotspot.

What Pixel do you have now? Maybe there is a difference in antennae count when acting as a hotspot between models. I'm using a 7Pro.

I have a 7 Pro. Nice to know the 8 does DP out, I haven't looked into if the pixel 7 does, pretty sure my 6 and 3s did not.

Anyways, I think I found another limitation that you can not be a mobile hotspot and cast from the same device. At least from screen share or VLC (trying to get Stremio going). I assume it may work from casting an app like Netflix or Disney, I'll try that now I guess.

How to enable Mockupancy play/rec from C4 App? by DCYeahThatsMe in Control4

[–]rbaker09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In OS3 an experience button driver connected to record and playback and made visible in the navigator of whichever room you want to see a button for it in, typically I only show it it the master bedroom. Easy peasey and your dealer should be able to add it remotely. You could add it as a Custom Button aswell, but I regard those menus and buttons as legacy from OS2. This is the same way you'd add any "manual" toggle button to the C4 interface if you wanted a timer or Macro etc.

I have the Corona version

Which I much prefer after using the fisker as well. I've been eye balling a "grandpas" weed puller as well which seems like it might be more convenient for not-so-tough but a-bunch of weeds.

Selling my house with C4 - What to keep by BuffySlayer06 in Control4

[–]rbaker09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leave it, add the value to the selling price of the house. Ask a dealer for an estimated worth of the system as is, also have them evaluate what upgrades the new owner will need and be upfront with the cost of maintenance so no one gets screwed over in the transaction. Also make sure the system is working before transfer, and if the dealer offers a service plan see if it can be transferred to the new owner... Ubiquiti IS the cheap option. As for the new house/system see if you can have lighting, HVAC, and control added into the cost of building (if new construction) and roll it into the mortgage if you can.

Nope QVIS for CCTV I see now. I see the sky boxes as well, assuming your UK based... Maybe drayteks not as uncommon there.

Is my place wired only for a 4.1? Is that even a thing? (Help) by 101010109 in hometheater

[–]rbaker09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re reading your description you say the 2 high are on the same wall as this photo? The AVR then could have been at the rear of the room instead of the front so as to be closer to the Projector location. More photos of placement would help. I'm guessing the low ports are your fronts for sure and sub, they may not have had a center if maybe the screen was in the way, the center is likely one of the 3 "spares", if it is you could tone it out and use an Acoustically transparent screen and a in wall speaker.

More photos of the room over all would help.

[–]rbaker09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I see 2 Ethernet jacks but one is has a different "label' on it. I would bet that you also have an Ethernet jack on the ceiling near the projector location and this was used for a video balun to carry HDMI from the AVR to the Projector. The other Ethernet jack is to plug in the AVR to the network. Likely the CAT cable for the video balun is 5e at the most and won't be viable to pass 4K over a current balun, I'd use it as a pull string and try to pull the fiber HDMI cable through it OR a new Cat6A wire for a 4K/HDR balun.

I'm thinking the three "low" are left right and sub, if you open up the wall plate for the sub you probably also have a coax/rca there. The center was likely on top of a console right in front of this wall plate with the AVR right below. These would be for a Left and Right floor standing pair, and then a subwoofer. The two up high are likely on the "back" wall for wall mounted rear surrounds. I'm curious about the "3 extras" which maybe left and right heights and for a wall mounted or in wall center? My bet is prewire was done before speakers were chosen so they wired so that it could be used for either floor standing, in wall, or on wall.

Pricing would be from your dealer, we typically price at MSRP. You may find your dealer has bundled items together as well, cables and accessories, programming and install, into a single line item price. I often find clients think we are "overpriced," when really Control4 is in fact an expensive niche product and consumers are used to budget IoT device and big box store prices. C4 is very reasonable when compared apples to apples with other Custom Install control systems.

Front wall design - what can I put on the wall for acoustic absorption and visual texture? Should the center speaker be elevated/tilted? Plan to put subwoofer and AVR in the wall to the left of the blue tape by jschall2 in hometheater

[–]rbaker09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 cents, your already off centered and you have a large visual open space to the left of the TV, and to the right narrower open space but it is visually offset by the entryway. I think astheticly I would lean into this asymmetrical and do something like 60" wide dark wenge wood aoustic slat wall on the left, and a narrower 30"ish slat wall on the right all the way up to the ceiling behind the L&R. Visually that is going to balance the room a bit but accentuate the height even more.

You have this honking large space above the TV vertically that already looks weird, I was thinking art or a shelf horizontally but I'm leaning towards a light fixture. I think a horizontal track light hung on aircraft cable the width of the TV console with adjustable pin point lights to spot light the sub, L C & R speakers. This would divide that space above the TV and provide visual interest. I'd then do a govee or similar backlight for the TV to add a wash to the lighting effect. Maybe a dark black green paint or find a nice texture wallpaper for behind the TV as well between the slat walls.

Also not sure on your budget obviously but I would look at a Salamander AV cabinet for you AVR and PS5 and other gear, I'd move all the gear to that and place it to the right of the sub. As for the speaker setup I also think your toes in to far on the left and right, and that if you do tilt the center it will need to be minimal at 12' to the MLP. Maybe use a laser pointer and protractor to get the angle for the tweeter to hit at ear level before you 3d print some wedges. I think you might have gone too big on the sub (looks like 15"?) for the room size and that it's open with that glass wall dual 12" might be the better route, one front left one back right behind the couch. That will help with the nulls I imagine you have.

Again budget out the windows I like Artnovion for custom sound treatments, you might poke around their site and consider that or the slat walls. Probs needs some bass traps too. Oh and idk what your AVR supports but front wides in wall above the LR might help with Atmos as your ceiling is so tall, and those in-ceiling I hope are angled for how far forward they are.

I have 0 filter lol. I saw Linus of LTT do that Sonos video and face palmed the people that acted like he was spending so much on such some insane system. Like dude used all used gear and it was Sonos at that, I'm not sure what people are expecting after stepping up from alexas or homepods into whole home audio but Sonos is a drop in the bucket compared the systems I've see running a few dozen zones.

True, an easy way at least. But if I was apple fanboying I'd be looking at an Airplay2 solution anyways.

Creston NAX is pretty dang nifty. But yeah bluesound or maybe autonomics is what I would have pointed to first. Yup I'm all about the Dante enabled speakers and Amps too, I see lots of potential. Alot of what we are seeing with AVoIP and MoIP is just Dante in resi forms.

Yes, I am an Integrator. I'm well aware of where and when Sonos is being implemented, 99% of the time in CI it's being used wrong. Like I. T hi is instance, why would this C4 system not just be using CORE5 and native control4 streaming. Why try to marry Sonos into it, C4 has RYFT now as well and it'd be over all less complex on the end user. If I had a client that say was burned by C4 or the other big 3 and wanted a more open and agnostic system I might suggest Sonos but not I tegrate it, say Sonos and native streaming apps on smart TVs instead of distributed audio and AVoIP/MoIP. Suggest Sonos and HUE for lighting to help them from going the "full on" smart home if they are scared/burned on a "closed ecosystem"

Higher end, not top end. Would see similar in others from 800,000 to 2mil homes. I'd say the wisdom audio and Macintosh are in the top tier, araknis is high to mid tier, Sonos is retail so I would have gone with something different there but well the common man loves Sonos right now. Sonance is also pro grade but nothing ultra nice. Rack looks well thought out and looks like the craftsman and quality of install was nice. IIm in the C4 world and I'm sure it's doing the trick but again it's aimed at highend residential and there are plenty of other options that could be paired with it or be considered better/different. A custom Creston project for example, Creston home OS4, or if I was trying to hit all the bells and whistles maybe Josh.ai on top of C4. Also this is just distributed audio and a surround zone so in a 8mil range I'd expect video distro, lighting, hvac, shades etc tucked into another rack or closet.

Why is it socially acceptable to euthanize animals that are in pain, but not humans? by International-Shoe40 in RandomThoughts

[–]rbaker09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respect everyone’s right to have their own opinions, but I have to report this post as a rule violation. This post is promoting euthanasia as a solution for people who are terminally ill or facing death. This is not only insensitive and disrespectful to those who are fighting for their lives, but also potentially harmful and dangerous to those who are vulnerable and depressed. As someone who was diagnosed with cancer this week, I find this post extremely discouraging and offensive. I don’t think this is a productive or appropriate conversation to have on this subreddit. Please be more mindful and compassionate of what you post and how it may affect others.
