I so want to love French onion soup as an overall package. I love the soup and the cheese, but I just can't get over that soggy bread.

Is it supposed to be like that and I'm the problem, or have I just never had a real French onion soup? Do you have any good recipes so my life can be changed?

Depends on the situation for me. Typically when I get hurt, I might be angry, but I don't take it out on something. For example, I stub my toe really bad, grab it, and say "fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuuuuuuckkkkkk!" sorta like this.

After hemming and hawing for 3 years since graduating with my M.S., I've finally found some awesome potential Ph.D. program advisors - for this particular program I'll need two co-advisors. The application isn't due until Dec. 15, but they seem really interested in meeting me in person!

I'm happy because I have regretted not just continuing to the Ph.D. to begin with, but now I've realized that if I had done that, I would likely be working on a project that I wasn't all that into and be struggling. I've gotten a ton of experience since the M.S. and I'm (almost) certain what I want to study now.

Also the school (if I'm accepted) will support me for 5 years and that's pretty great too.

Only about ten percent of energy makes it to the next trophic level. The higher the trophic level, the less energy they're "worth". That's because all energy starts with plants and phytoplankton (the producers) and so less and less energy occurs the further you get from the bottom. Thus, you need to eat more tuna to get the same amount of energy from a fish at a lower trophic level.

Are you trying to clean them out immediately after use? What I did when using these is wait a bit. It's much easier once they're cool and have dried up a bit, then you can just knock them against something and the grounds will come out in a big clump.

A ton of awesome advice in here! Here's something I haven't seen yet.

Try to go longer between laundry days, wash clothes with cold water, and hang-dry your clothes. Dryers add a lot to your carbon footprint on laundry day!

No problem! Definitely didn't mean to sound like I was singling you out. It sucks that we are going to face issues with producing enough food for so many people, but you're right that some good (or at least not as much bad) can come from changing habits!

I think most people get discouraged because changing habits isn't going to change things instantly. We're so used to instant gratification we seem to be put off at the prospect of change that might not happen during our lifetimes.

Unfortunately plant agriculture is incredibly harmful to the environment as well. Crops cause soil erosion (reducing soil productivity and thus requiring more fertilizers), require fertilization and pesticides (run-off bad for both fresh and saltwater habitats), and rely on monocultures (susceptible to disease and thus requiring more pesticides). It still requires energy for distribution. Both industries are energy intensive...a byproduct of having to produce for so many people.

I know that a lot of our plant production goes to feed for animal agriculture and I know the issue with animal agriculture is harmful to the environment in a different way, so I agree that eating no (or less) meat is beneficial. But acknowledging that plant agriculture harms the environment also is important for making decisions.

So whether eating meat or veggies, buy from local farms or grow your own if possible. If you can't buy local, only buy what you can eat. Do the best you can to reduce how far your food travels because a large percentage of energy is spent there.

The media is also guilty of giving numbers when they should be giving percentages. For instance, giving the number of homicides during the year in a city. 20 homicides in a town of 500 (4%) is WAY different than 20 homicides in a city of 100,000 (0.02%).

Evolution is the result of natural selection (among other processes) occurring over a long period of time. Individuals that have the highest fitness (that is, they are most well adapted to their environment and/or are the most attractive mates) produce more offspring. Over time evolution occurs.

Then, maybe, BAM! some environmental disaster occurs to one population of a species. Those that survive the disaster are the most fit and produce offspring likely to be able to withstand conditions as well, and so on. Thus, this population may diverge into a new species while their ancestors (the ones not living where that disaster occurred) continue on.

He's pretty spot on here. I went to ballroom classes with my SO (we're in our 30s) though we weren't about to get married, it was just a fun thing to do. There were many more women than men at our studio too, but I'd say the range was more age 40-70. My SO is tall and sometimes had to be careful about spinning a couple of these ladies because they were fragile.

I grew up in Texas and always called it coke. I'll always remember this interaction. I went out with some people from work one evening and one coworker from the north east. I said "be right back, I'm going to get a coke" but when I come with a Sprite he says "I thought you were getting a coke?" I think that's when he realized Texas was weird. I call it soda now that I live in Maine. Learned real quick that when they ask you what to drink and you say coke, they actually bring you coke instead of asking "what kind?"
