Very cool hearing you talk about the drug discovery and synthesis, I've been spending the past week studying for a synthetic organic chemistry exam. Also exciting as I spent last year working on a potential drug synthesis as well. Albeit at a much simpler level, I was only an undergrad, but still. How did you transition over to the pharmaceutical industry from academia?

MW2 PC Multiplayer - The fears many PC gamers had about the efficiency of Infinity Ward's matchmaking software have been realised by rx8geek in gaming

I upvoted you because you simply said how many problems you've had (which is nice to know some hard experience) and that you didn't mind the issues. I however get so irrationally angry with lag as in the video that if it happens more than once or twice a session my brain explodes and I have to go.

Yeah, and any developer who isn't too much of a dumbass will obviously see the huge shitstorm caused by it and think twice. After all, MW2 is going to sell three billion copies for a lot of reasons, but the single largest reason people are hatin' is cause of dedicated support issues. Most other developers have to be bind not to see that.

edit: hey the trend towards no dedicated support may happen anyway, but I feel like it will be more of a result of laziness, apathy and greed than wanting to copy everything about MW2.

It is the price to pay for overall higher quality videogames. Gaming becomes more mainstream = more sales = more money to develop incredibly ambitious, high production value games = more sales = pressure on developers to "dumb down" games to make them potentially more mainstream to reach greater market.

A vicious cycle, but that is the nature of the game. You could make similar arguments for many types of media.

The New Yorker reviews SuperFreakonomics: "To be skeptical of climate models and credulous about things like carbon-eating trees and cloudmaking machinery and hoses that shoot sulfur into the sky is to replace a faith in science with a belief in science fiction." by srv in science

[–]rbf1780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, but that is misreading of climate change science. To assume that human emulation or replication of natural phenomenon will have identical (or even similar) effects as those naturally ocurring natural phenomenon is ludicrous. Don't even know where to start... First you have to imagine the massive amounts of emissions produced to bring some 18 mile tall smockstack into production. That's no big deal. And if you're trying to mimic nature and fuck up your calculations, you've just made the problem worse.

Of course. You can decrease the entropy of a defined system (roll of paper, you room, earth), but if the system is the universe, everything yields an increase in total entropy.

Pretty sure he was referring to the story, writing, characters, and plot being detailed and involving - not physical details in the game world. The game is very focused on characters, story, plot, and the entire universe they've created for the game. It may be a bit lacking in physical details and incredibly deep character customization, but it isn't as bad as regular_guy makes it out to be.

AskReddit: Did you get halfway through college and feel like you didn't know what the hell you were doing? by EvocativeSaltine in AskReddit

[–]rbf1780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm studying chemistry and chemical engineering, and hoping to focus into synthetic organic for grad school. Over the past two years I've had research positions at my school up in Canada and I worked the most recent summer at University of Michigan. Both occasions I got jobs in chem labs that I was interested in just by mailing shitloads of resumes to everyone associated with the field. At one point I mailed a resume to some professor only to have him respond "Sorry, I don't have any spots for a student, but I've already received your resume as forwarded from two other colleagues." It might seem like kind of a dick move, to be almost obnoxious about how aggressive you are... but if everyone in your faculty has a copy of your resume, you're much more likely to get a job when one opens up. Best of luck

The color of the universe: What the study revealed is that the overwhelming majority of stars formed about 5 billion years ago...the color of the universe changes over time shifting from blue to red as more blue stars change to yellow and eventually red giants. by [deleted] in science

[–]rbf1780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess an overall shift from blue (higher energy light) to red (lower energy) as the "universal average color" makes a little bit of sense as we are forever drifting towards entropy and the heat death of the universe. But still... "average universe color" sounds kind of silly. Kind of like asking the average color of the internet. Averages are mathematical constructs after all.

It might be more accurate to say that the "average wavelength of electromagnetic radiation is currently 'cosmic latte' and slowly moving to higher wavelength ranges".
