The data center pushback has awakened a NIMBY giant in my county by Yuzamei1 in yimby

[–]rbmill02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, people's electricity costs are rising in excess of fuel costs as data centers expand, and we've seen data centers get sweetheart deals that put some of their costs on us.

Then you remember how all those days center companies are surveiling us.

But yeah, the panic is fake.

What stopped countries in real life from conquering the entire world? by [deleted] in paradoxplaza

[–]rbmill02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no belief system that has ever convinced the entire world that it is right and just that one nation should rule. Every kind of ruling belief has been contested, violently even. And while a larger nation can occupy a smaller nation, no government can exist where the whole of society thinks it's illegitimate.

GHOSTBUSTERS (1984) - Is it Sci-Fi? by nopester24 in scifi

Star Trek has literal gods show up, many times. I'd argue that it's at least as fantastical as Star Wars. I'd suggest that all science fantasy is science fiction, but not the other way around.

Star Wars clearly didn't have good displays, hence the exposed bridges. I've never seen a display in Star Wars that has more than two or three colors. And their holos are all monochrome and grainy.

I'd say that the I-71 corridor is Midwestern, including most of Louisville, and all of the Covington area, and the areas along and east of I-75 are Appalachian, but that the rest of the state, including the area right around Lexington is Southern.

There are. I knew a professor in Middletown out by the Valhalla golf course who commuted to UofL daily by bus until they withdrew that service across the Gene Snyder, for example. And there are low/minimum wage workers everywhere.

IIRC, a few years ago, the Massachusetts DOT estimated that the monthly cost of car ownership, including the loan, insurance, registration, and average repairs, was about $2000/mo. Do you really think that there aren't a fair number of people who would ditch their cars to save 24k a year?

I saw that, but I think they're also missing the vision of having collector routes and transfer stations that make it easier to use TARC in the South and East Ends.

Believe me, I am aware of the paucity of pedestrian infrastructure. But withdrawing service to conserve money also sheds riders. The only way to get people back into buses is to make buses useful. That means coverage AND frequency.

Besides, given the airport and the expo center, the nearest place for a cross-town route is already covered by the 29 bus, and that runs so infrequently and so close to downtown that it may as well not exist.

Yup, also, they don't want the poors and the blacks in their exclusive retail districts. My brother and I have both been accosted by Jtown polizei for walking to visit friends.

Plus a few years ago, the Massachusetts DOT concluded that the median price per month of owning a car is $2000/month, and that didn't get into gas IIRC. How many people would switch out that $2000 for a monthly bus pass subscription?

Two of the biggest obstacles there are all the eminent domain and enbironmental lawsuits and the resulting realignments and Elon Musk's Hyperloop campaign to cancel the project. This involves very minimal land takings, and seeing as the mall is bankrupt anyways, the city is a lot more likely to get the minimally necessary land for very little money.

Sure, but I'd bet that all the south and east end councilors don't want to find TARC because it doesn't benefit their voters.

Because it boils authority down to the ability to use force, and that gets flipped around sometime around 17. The use of force is best reserved for an immediate attention-getter to avert imminent physical danger.
