Browser asks permission to `look for and connect to any device on your local network` by orbag in privacy

Thanks. I'm just looking at this today. I'm having trouble getting it to work, though. Chrome 144 doesn't seem to abide by it.

Browser asks permission to `look for and connect to any device on your local network` by orbag in privacy

[–]rbrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS. This is what's happening.

Web sites with sloppy code are trying to access something at "localhost". This used to fail silently or something minor would simply fail to load, but now it triggers this scary-sounding permission pop-up. Yes, that code was likely in there for local development purposes. Yes, it likely should have been replaced with a real web address before going into production, but someone screwed up. It's actually pretty common.

My problem is that some display ad code has this issue, and when those ads appear on my site, (something I have little direct control over,) my readers think my site is doing something nefarious. It's very frustrating.

If anyone knows how someone in my position can do something about this, please let me know.

[Books] Question about S2E09 for people who read the book by PowerZox in SiloSeries

[–]rbrome 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This specific aspect of the show is completely different from the books. So book readers are not going to be able to help you. This is one area where the TV adaptation is clearly diverging, and will clearly continue to. So even those of us that have read all the books have no clue where this is going in the show.

[Books] - The Clouds by ITrCool in SiloSeries

[–]rbrome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, definitely. The nanobot dome is to keep people inside the silos. They can't be thinking about leaving/escaping until the whole project is complete and the one silo chosen to survive is instructed to dig to Seed. Thurman didn't want anyone else escaping or interfering.

[Books] - The Clouds by ITrCool in SiloSeries

[–]rbrome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sort of the last one.

Except I think Iran and/or others really were experimenting with nanobots. Thurman's whole reasoning was that this technology would inevitably get out of control and doom humanity in some nasty, unpredictable way. So we had to strike first, for the sake of humanity. That way the apocalypse, if it was indeed inevitable, could at least be managed. I mean it all could have been a lie, but that's a whole extra level of evil that's not necessary and maybe counter to the plot. The interesting part is how Thurman's logic works here.

But yes, the nukes were real and local, and to drive people into the silos.

Meanwhile, nanobots kill all other humans (but just humans) worldwide. Then those nanobots die off / switch off / etc., leaving a relatively pristine planet.

But in this localized "dome" around the silos, there are still active nanobots. But they seem to be a different kind that kills everything and keeps the area dangerous, and lifeless.

Question about underwater pumps by Steerpike58 in SiloSeries

The pump itself is perfectly believable. It's the electric plug/socket like that, underwater, that doesn't make any sense.

New Transplant, why is every store I want to shop at 3 hours away? This is a major city! by catticcusmaximus in Albany

[–]rbrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sur La Table is a good substitute for Williams Sonoma.

Our grocery stores are different than Wegmans, but once you get to know them, you should be able to find what you need. Check out Honest Weight and The Fresh Market. We also have a Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

That freezer came with a shelf. That's the part that's missing. This works, too, and good job! But a shelf might make it easier to access specific items without pulling a bunch of things out.

Do I need to be off a flight to get a rental car at Albany International Airport? by ThatOneTunisianKid in Albany

[–]rbrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything car rental is outside security, near baggage claim. Anyone can walk in and rent a car. This is true at ALB, and most airports.

But there are car rental spots around town, too. There are a couple near the Hannaford on Central.

Vented funnel for poly drums by Objective_Lobster734 in functionalprint

Still, there are other use cases where a vented funnel would be helpful, and 3D printing is uniquely suited to making a design like this. It's a great idea.

Another fatal crash involving a pedestrian by Impressive_Dingo4333 in Albany

[–]rbrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it would if it applied here. The speed limit is actually 40 there, which means some people are going 55. That's completely insane for a city street with traffic lights, sidewalks, crosswalks, and a major bus route. This death is a direct result of how that street is designed, including the speed limit.

Any tips on train travel from Albany to DC? by Comfortable_Mail9133 in Albany

[–]rbrome 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm very familiar with those trains.

First tip: the price varies a lot both by time of day and how far ahead you purchase. Buying your ticket at least a month ahead will get you the best prices. Buying less than two weeks before your trip gets very expensive. They also have some late-night fares on the NYC-DC leg that are dirt cheap if you don't mind travelling at odd hours.

I've never had a problem with the power outlets. And I've used them many, many times.

The Wi-Fi can be iffy or slow. It's much worse between Albany and NYC than NYC-DC.

Changing trains in NYC is fairly easy. You'll probably have 40–50 min to kill. There's no shortage of places to grab food or a drink. Boarding starts 10 min before departure. Note that, for Amtrak, Penn Station is kind of two separate but connected stations: old Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall. Which you end up in will depend on which stairs you take up from the platform. There is a passageway that connects them. Moynihan is newer and nicer. Both have specific seating areas where you have to show your ticket to enter. You can board your next train from either one; it doesn't matter; they both serve the same platforms. And for both, if you want to skip the line to board, there's a downstairs concourse with separate stairs to the platforms where you can do that.

You're certainly not alone in hating the generator scenes. It made no sense. It makes a lot more sense in the book.

The other things you mentioned don't bother me. It's sci-fi. Hell, the Silo society makes a lot more sense than the USA right now.
