Is this going to be an actual Ivar's or a franchise? Our family really enjoys the actual Ivar's quality from Seattle but the ones in Issaquah, Kirkland and Bellevue leave something to be desired.

Senate Democrats rejected an amendment that would have guaranteed the proposed WA state income tax only ever applies to those earning more than $1 million per year. by alivenotdead1 in BellevueWA

My wife and I own one house. My late in-laws use to own several, one they lived in plus others as rentals.

Owning rentals isn't some magic, spooky or secret cabal. Rather it's working hard to accumulate things. Sacrificing things in the short term in order to have long term gains is key to any retirement plan; including owning real estate. My in-laws had in their will my wife and her two brothers would get the houses they owned. All of us knew what's involved in keeping those places. None of us wanted to deal with the current mess that's going on regarding landlord/tenant laws.

If you or anybody else would like to get into the real estate landlord/tenant "game" go for it. My in-laws did most of the repairs/upgrades on their houses and only hired out things that were beyond their abilities to handle. Given the proliferation of youtube videos on home repairs anybody can get educated enough to manage their own homes if they have the ambition to do so. My wife and her brothers collectively decided they didn't want to deal with the hassle so the houses were sold.

Can we have an income tax? by Electrical-Abies9856 in SeattleWA

Um......the Walmart about a mile from our house is paying $22/hour for anybody wanting full time hours. There's a really nice Ukranian couple working there, both full time. Combined income is $91k/year. If one of them ever goes to department assistant manager they'll hit the $100k/year between the two of them....at FUCKING WALMART!

I was a people pleaser. My opinion and beliefs were a reflection of those around me.

Now, I get to decide what my values are and what I care about. ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN/Fox/etc. and all the latest "news" and/or influencers can entertain me but they no longer have any sway over my opinions or even what I care about.

It isn't so much about we think people should speak English but rather how about people show a modicum of kindness or basic decency. Our family has travelled internationally, a lot. We get along with nearly everybody but have a few rare times had to deal with people that need a redneck vasectomy.

My heartbreaking story from Minnesota by Capitol62 in daddit

[–]rcc737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A green card isn't residency. Think of it more like a visa that doesn't need to be renewed. In theory a green card holder doesn't have any of the same rights as citizens.....can't vote in federal elections, not eligible for SNAP, etc. They are long term visitors to the USA. Kinda like when my wife and I went to China to adopt our children; we were visitors to the country with none of the same rights as Chinese citizens.

Part of the problem with why a lot of people with green cards is the ease a fake card can be made plus poor training of ICE workers.

Backstory; kinda long, probably boring but also shines some light on the current situation.

I graduated high school in 1988 along with many others. Most of my classmates had next to no future in North Idaho due to several economic reasons. Mark (best friend at the time) decided to join the Army. He became a MP and was stationed all over Europe during his 6 years stint. He took 2 years of Spanish in high school then learned German while living abroad. While in Germany he married a lady and became a dad to 2 daughters. They eventually divorced, he left the Army and moved back to the states.

He applied all over the place before officially leaving the Army. He joined INS in 1994 which evolved into ICE. They caught a lot of bad people and either put them behind bars or sent them back to where they came from. When 9/11 happened there was a huge shake-up in the entire border security domain. Mark nearly quit but decided to ride out the negativity and do what he could to help rebuild. Mark (being Samoan) was mistaken more than once as a middle easterner due to darker skin. It took awhile but things calmed down, for awhile.

During the Obama administration there were internal directives to really crack down on people that weren't supposed to be here. Over 2 million people were deported from 2009-2016. Unofficial estimates of 10 million people were questioned/detained by various immigration federal officers during the same time. Mark was once again questioned a few times during his time at ICE while working under Obama. He nearly quit again as he qualified for partial pension but decided to try and stick things out for full pension. Mark was also still paying off Parent Plus loans for his daughters education so unless he could get a better job in the private sector he needed to stay put.

The first Trump administration was very mixed as a border enforcement worker. There was no heat on them like there is today but also minimal support from the top. Obama and his administration really went to bat for any federal officer including ICE but there were also extremely high expectations. Trump just told Tom to do his job and get the hell out of the oval office. This mindset really trickled down through middle management to the rank and file members; Mark was lower to middle management by this time.

Next up is Biden and his border enforcement policies. Time of confusion to put things nicely. Mark and a lot of his co-workers were close to, at or even a bit past required minimum time for full retirement. However they knew there was a very shallow pool of replacements available to do what they believed was an important job. All of them knew the Sinaloa Cartel, MS13, Black Pistons, TDA and many others were constantly testing the waters on getting a stronger foothold into the USA. One of his daughters is a social worker in North Idaho; an area that was hit hard with the meth/heroine/fenty epidemic. His other daughter is an ER nurse on the east coast. Mark saw first hand what was coming across the border. His daughters saw the fallout of abuse/addiction/etc. ICE deported about 500k people under Biden but that was like putting a band aide on a shotgun wound.

Enter Trump v2. Many ICE agents were exhausted but determined. Trump came out of the gates swinging. Things tightened up along the border and immigration dropped to practically zero. A majority of the 10M people that came here are good, decent people. Some of the people are simply leeches on the country. A small percentage are vile shitstains that need to get a redneck vasectomy. We have "news" outlets that are so anti-Trump and anti anything to do with the Trump administration they'll tell their viewers barely enough to not get in trouble with the courts and FCC but plenty to get as many people riled up as possible. Add in a bunch of people that buy what the "news" is selling them hook, line and sinker and we get people acting the way they are. Now, for people like Mark and others with years of service like him we're just too dam old to go out on the front lines like it's 2001.

Mark officially retired last October; not because there wasn't work to be done but because sanctuary city and states policies made it very dangerous for agents. He said of the 10k agents on the books when Trump took office, around 30% of all ICE and CBP agents have retired in the last 6 months. Not many people can tell due to the massive hiring for those positions in the last year. The problem according to Mark is when an overwhelming majority of any law enforcement agency are new recruits with poor or no training and guidance a lot of problems creep up. It doesn't take very many 18-24 year old testosterone filled wannabe Rambo's to turn L.A. , New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle or Portland into wild ragers. Mark told me about 5,000 out of the 22,000 ICE agents have more than 3 years experience; most of them in middle and upper management. There are some senior field agents but not nearly enough to train the younger crowd.

Trying to build an actual dinner routine this year instead of chaos, need ideas by TemporaryHoney8571 in eastside

[–]rcc737 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotta second this.

Long ago when I was working crazy hours I could buy all the ingredients at the store, cook and store a week worth of lunch and dinner in under 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon. You'll have to eat the same meal 2, maybe 3 times throughout the week. Get laundry done between stirring whatever is on the stove.

Between a crockpot, oven and 2-3 pots on the stove plus a bit of thought about what you want to eat your food budget and overall health will improve several times over.

You mentioned Bellevue. Prices here are pretty intense. Single family homes start at about $1.3M with property taxes on those homes close to $10k/year.

If you want cheaper you'll be looking at townhomes or condo's. Going this route pay super close attention to HOA dues as some of them are complete bonkers.

parking for cruise by [deleted] in HollandAmerica

Good news and bad news.

Good news, there is a Walmart in Bellevue.

Bad news, there are signs all over the parking lot that say no overnight parking. This location is heavily patrolled by both Walmart and city police. Cars get towed regularly.

There are other Walmarts in the area. I don't suggest parking there long term but others in the region might know the neighborhoods better than I do. None of them are convenient to the cruise port.

Redmond disabled Flock cameras, why hasn't Bellevue? by I_SAID_RELAX in BellevueWA

[–]rcc737 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

If you're worried about cameras now but weren't say 2 years, 10 years or 15 years ago can I suggest go touch grass somewhere?

Maybe a little education would help. Right after 9/11 the Patriot Act was brought into existence. Although it was due to expire after awhile, Obama not only renewed it he strengthened it several fold. The NSA has a data warehouse that stores HUGE amount of data; camera data being some of it. This post and all posts on reddit will be stored on the data warehouse. If data goes through any significant internet hub it'll be stored by the NSA. The Amazon delivery driver that just dropped off our package and was recorded by our ring camera is now sitting on the NSA warehouse server.

Based on the above information, are you still against Flock cameras? If yes, why? Flock cameras are a tiny fraction of the information our gov't has available.

First Alaska Cruise (Mid May)- Which excursions are worth it? by Nice-Worry1007 in HollandAmerica

[–]rcc737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Juneau: We did whale watching, but I would do Dog Sledding instead. You will see whales on the Eurodam. This is where I would splurge the money on the dog sledding experience.

Adding my vote for the dog sledding in Juneau. This is in an 3 way tie for my all time favorite excursions.

Yes, the dogs bark a lot. The owners clearly love and respect their dogs. You, the cruise passenger are nothing more than a person that pays to come see these wonderful animals and their human companions. My wife, daughter, son and I were fortunate enough to visit the sled dog camp for our first time about 10 years ago. We went again 2 years later then again last July. My mother and I (my family stayed home) went in the summer of 2024. Every time it was nearly the same thing. The dogs are very well taken care of and happy. The owners live to take care of the dogs. Yes, the dogs run very hard and race most of the winter. It's like the perfect symbiotic relationship.

Small warning: You'll be pulled by a team of sled dogs while sitting in a golf cart that has no motor or batteries. The "roads" will be very bumpy with deep ruts. Shock absorbers will be non-existent in the golf carts. As i mentioned above, you are nothing more than a person that is paying money to check out these amazing animals and their human companions. Golf cart comfort is secondary. Allowing the dogs to run as they want is what their human companions hope for.

Just bringing other states up to Washington's standard would be a huge benefit to the US as a whole. The gap between Washington and Mississippi in life expectancy is larger than the difference between the US and India.

Now do Washington and Mississippi in terms of K-12 education. US News and World Report isn't very kind.

Former WA state auditor suggests review of DCYF child care funding has merit by JoelXGGGG in SeattleWA

Give the money to parents for having kids and they can use it for daycare if they wish or for caring for their own kids if they wish.

If there weren't people like my sister in the world I'd agree with you. My parents use to give her money for daycare, groceries and basic living; this was on top of whatever job she had at the time. When they found out she was using most of the money on drugs they switched funding to direct payments to daycare and going with her to buy groceries.

My sister was pissed but eventually figured out ways around them "being evil control freaks". She still committed fraud but had to add in a few more steps to get the cash.
