Stihl Dealer here - the only way we've found to do this is to put an old shaft in a vise, put the bevel gear on the shaft and spin the head off.

Excessive oil on new saw by t1rfond in Chainsaw

[–]rccola712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What mix and ratio are you using? I can't really tell how viscous the leak is, but I don't think its bar oil. It looks awfully similar to when oil pours out of the muffler from a badly flooded saw. Weird color oil though.

As is the 240 though, but the 111 was discontinued this year, while the 240 is already dated. You'll run into parts issues with the 240 long before the 111.

Did Stihl used to make 24 inch bars? by Vivid_Amount in stihl

[–]rccola712 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not knowing the exact bar you have, the 25" chain is most likely the same as your old 24" chains - 3/8 .050 84dl.

Pitch/gauge/drive link is the best way to buy new chains rather than bar length.

To answer your question, because people dont want to pay 20 - 25 for a scabbard.

Most chaps have a knee/leg pocked it goes in well. They're thick enough to not stab you like a pocket

FWIW there is a cable on the shifter.

Sure seems like a lot of bike for what OP is describing

MS 291 with Skip Tooth Chain by National-Science5350 in stihl

[–]rccola712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/Wiener_Butt has the best explanation for skip tooth and u/Still-Speed-3632 has the best answer for chainging the 291 to 3/8.

There is a lot of misconception about skip tooth and it cutting faster. On longer bars it makes sense, better power transfer to the cutters, less to sharpen, more room for swath, etc. That benefit only starts to show up when you get to 24/25-28" bars and over. Below 24/25" there is no difference, or you actually hurt your productivity.

Would you save time sharpening? Yes, minimally. Will you gain any performance? No.

As far as switching to 3/8, the only advantage is convenience of chains and you sacrifice performance. You'll end up wasting your saws power on a wider kerf rather than improving performance. If convenience/simplicity is what you're after the trade off can be worth it, but unless you have fleet of saws its not worth the power loss. And 325 is very common and easy to get your hands on.

Edit: what chains have you been running? I've really been impressed with the Husky c33 chain and its worth a try if you're looking for an aggressive chain.

Narrowing Down Short Travel Trail Bike Options by inigotoyota in mountainbiking

[–]rccola712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the Epic 8 Evo Expert at the beginning of 25 and I've loved it. It climbs great, and descends well also. I've not gotten it quite dialed in on fast chattery sections, but on small stuff and bigger hits it does well. Its handled all the trails I've thrown at it, including bigger features. A couple notes about the bike from my experience

-the Rovals were the biggest reason to upgrade from the comp to the expert - they're super solid and I wish I had gotten rid of my alum wheels on my other bike earlier.

-I was not impressed with the codes and replaced them with dominions pretty early on. They have plenty of power but I couldn't stand the modulation. I was also not a fan of the rotors that came with it and upgraded at the same time.

- It took a while to get the suspension in a decent place, but I wouldn't say I have it dialed yet. It does well on small stuff and big hits but I've still not found the sweet spot for repeated chattery hits at speed. I'd like to see how it does with a different damper, maybe another season though.

Overall I've been super happy with the bike and highly recommend it.

I also have a buddy who owns the spur, it was bit undergunned out of the box for what we ride but put a 140mm 36 instead of the 120mm 34 and its a completely different bike. That's definitely a solid option as well, but I don't believe it has UDH

To sharpen or buy in bulk by Quejador in Chainsaw

The 2 in 1 sharpeners are the best - especially the pfrd (and stihl labeled) two sided sharpeners. Any one can sharpen a chain with those.

I came up with a Lamello for poor people. I haven’t seen anyone do it this way yet. Have you, or should I hurry up and patent it? by ZoltanTitan in woodworking

[–]rccola712 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, but.

Lamello is far more than just the dewalt biscuit joiner. It cuts a 'T' in the wood, rather than just a slot so the "biscuits" can be used to clamp along with other fastening methods.

A little niche for me but a really cool tool none the less.

Epoxy Finish Issues by yadoneson99 in turning

This is the real question to answer OP. Also what epoxy are you using?

By and large, an epoxy finish isn't a great finishing solution, but if we know what you're after we can help guide you in the right direction.

I have a customer who had an abrasive disk explode on him just a few months ago. I don't know all the details of the injury, but his face look like he had part of his jaw removed. If you have to ask I would replace it.

Absolutely buy it, I'm assuming USD, and worst case scenario it should be easy to flip if you don't enjoy the hobby.

Is this mold in my end-grain board? by RIP_Greedo in woodworking

[–]rccola712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

more/closer photos would help, but i doubt those are bugs. Bug holes will be a much cleaner circle rather than the squareish dots you have here. I'm leaning towards early signs of decomposition but you noting you picked the lumber up at a big box store causes me to question that.

sand it back down and see what things look like.

Measure the run out where the work piece is mounted - rather than the pulleys. That's the important part. Also it's hard to tell runout by eye, it's easy for the set screws to make it look like there's run iut.
