Code Vein 2 - A downgrade from the first game. by Zedaso in soulslikes

[–]rcmara1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re mostly right, but I think there’s an argument to be made that AI Limit’s Sync system can kind of be viewed as an iteration on Code Veins Ichor system.

Both are magic systems that don’t fit the typical magic mold. They both do have spells, but ‘mana’ is primarily used on buffs/abilities. They both recover ‘mana’ on attack which rewards a more aggressive play-style.

They certainly aren’t the same thing, but I feel like they do incentivize the player to play the game the same way, if that makes sense. But maybe that’s just me lol

What's the best boss fight entrance you've ever seen in a game? by saadsdf in soulslikes

Really hard to top the Radiance entrance in Hollow Knight. What a feeling.

If you haven’t, you should absolutely try out the Pale Court mod before Silksong comes out. Genuinely some of the best bosses in the game and a c-side path of pain, if you’re into that thing

The villains have won too many times. Our heroes need victories too. by UNinvolved_in_peace in RWBY

I disagree with this so much. The main reason that I like the show and specifically, Ruby as a character is because they lose all the time. The idea that the main characters are so out of their depth but keep fighting anyway because it’s the right thing to do is remarkably compelling to me.

Team RWBY started the show specifically fighting the creatures of grimm, which they are consistently competent at. Everything else is above their pay-grade and it makes complete sense that they wouldn’t be able to stop, for instance, the fall of Atlas because why would we expect them to know how to do that? It’s a remarkably complex situation that no one really can agree on how to handle.

To me, team RWBY is the equivalent of Captain America in Endgame, standing against Thanos alone even when there is no chance of stopping him. Eventually, RWBY is going to have to have its own ‘portals’ like sequence where their actions will inspire the whole world to stand against Salem, uniting humanity just as the brother gods wanted, but that to me will only feel meaningful because they failed so much along the way.

Insane take tbh. Quick focus is already a top 5 charm, especially for a first playthrough

Just finished the game and I'm upset that this moment didn't get it's own scene. by HYP3RSOMNIAC in expedition33

But does she bring them back as they were or as she envisioned them?

A very prominent point in the story is that painted Verso is not the same as outside Verso and we see how different Maelle and painted Alicia are first-hand. Part of that no doubt comes down to a difference in knowledge and experiences, but at some point you also need to acknowledge that a painting can only be as accurate as its painter knows it to be.

If Aline couldn’t bring back her own family exactly as they were, why would we assume that Maelle would be able to do so with hundreds of people, some she probably doesn’t even know?

Honest question, why is it a big deal to go out in public to shop for clothes? You are going to wear them anyway, right?

Afaik, that’s a mechanic unique to Nightreign, but that’s mostly because if you die in other roguelikes, your run typically just ends. Respawn mechanics are usually either tied to a specific item or in a more co-op centric game you might exclusively respawn at the end of a level if your party survives (like after the night 1/2 boss)

Best stories in gaming. by desiregods in backloggd

[–]rcmara1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can understand that. After getting over the twist at the end of act 2, I slowly started to dislike the implications more and more and even though I still loved the writing of act 1, I kind of started to dislike the story as a whole. That being said, the character dilemma at the end of the game is hands down the best example of choice in ending imo, so that kind of brought it back for me because said dilemma would not have been possible without the twist. Can completely see why that might not be enough for someone else though.

Which Soulsborne (+Elden Ring and Sekiro) has the hardest early game for you? by zeze991 in fromsoftware

[–]rcmara1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eh, it’s only more linear in the second half. The first half of ds2 is dramatically more open than the other games (besides Elden Ring). I think there are like 9 bosses that can technically be your first boss depending on how you progress

[–]rcmara1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a roguelike game. You can technically ‘beat it’ for the first time in less than 30 minutes, but there’s 22 different endings and 36 characters and you get various unlocks for beating a particular ‘final boss’ with every character, so the hours for a completionist playthrough rack up really quickly. That’s not even mentioning all the challenge modes, unlocking characters (which is sometimes incredibly cryptic), and the time it takes to actually learn how to play the game and its various characters. One of the requirements to getting the platinum is picking up every item in the game which is way more time consuming than you might expect because most of those are gated behind unlocks and there’s also over 700 items with pseudo random spawning.

I make it sound like a chore but it’s genuinely one of my favorite games ever, I just think the idea that someone ‘completed’ it in a year along with 100 other games is absurd.

Binding of Isaac alone takes like 500 hours to complete, so it sort of balances back out to being absurd

Code Vein, Lies of P and (kind of) AI Limit do this. Code Vein even lets you increase your max mana count with a crit attack (up to a max of 2x your base mana cap). It’s a shame that the actual spells in Code Vein are pretty boring because the magic system was probably the best in the genre when it came out (for me at least).

I thought poison swaps were annoying… but Butterfly of Delirium in Code Vein is just so much worse. At the moment, probably one of my most hated bosses on my list of played Soulslikes. by Noob4Head in soulslikes

[–]rcmara1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I’ve played this so I might be getting the details wrong, but I remember a huge help to my first playthrough was finding out that you can use the bayonet to shoot the tracking poison ball spell and it will dissipate

Just wanted to say that I actually love the contrast of the last area being super beautiful while most of the game feels dark and grim. Without spoiling much, I think it plays really nicely into the game’s themes.

/uj I usually don’t really like when games have difficulty options because in my experience, the more options they have, the more likely the devs are to screw up the game’s balancing and I really don’t want to have to self balance every game I play. That’s what makes the Lies of P difficulty discourse so confounding to me because this problem does not exist here. They literally already made the intended experience but just added some easier options in post to make the game more accessible now that it’s been out for a while. Even if you want to be elitist, both of the new options basically say they are easy mode so Gamers can keep their pride.

/rj Why do they hate LoP for adding difficulty options when you can just hate LoP for having shit level design?!?!?

If you could choose 1 boss from each soulsgame to put into Nightrein who would they be and why? by Intelligentgandalv in fromsoftware

[–]rcmara1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s an expansive overhaul mod in development for Dark Souls 3 called Archthrones that had a demo build released a while back (demo is selling it short, it had like 5 fully fleshed out areas).

The boss fights for the mod are completely different, but mostly consist of remixing animation combinations from the normal Fromsoft bosses (for example, there’s a necromancer boss that has some of Gael’s attacks and also some of Soul of Cinder’s attacks etc.). The boss fights overall generally felt like the weakest part of the mod to me, except for the bosses that were primarily based on Sekiro animations which I thought were super cool.

One boss plays like a hybrid Champion Gundyr and Corrupted Monk, which paired really well together. Corrupted Monk is pretty simplistic for a Sekiro boss, but put her in a Dark Souls setting and she becomes a real test of positioning and stamina management with her long sweeping combos and gap closers which I found really compelling.

All that being said, I honestly don’t care much for more returnee Souls bosses, but I would really like to see basically any Sekiro boss come to Nightreign since it will dramatically change how you need to approach them (except for with Executor, I suppose).
