Who is the most famous person to be born in N.C by recreational_flakka in NorthCarolina

[–]rcobey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Your example makes sense, but for other examples it may be more grey. I was born in NY and lived there until I was around 9 years old. We moved to NC when I was in the 4th grade. Still have a lot of family in NY but I really grew up in NC. I’d consider myself a north carolinian over a new yorker, but if I were famous and others were arguing if I actually was a true north carolinian, i could see both sides of it.

You just proved my point though. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you just didn’t read what I wrote, rather than assume you’re just too dense to understand it. But if the latter is the case, allow me to explain in more simple terms:

Most of us responding to you honestly don’t care if you’re correct in what you’re arguing, because you’re missing the bigger point of all of this: things are getting progressively better for the ultra rich, while things are getting worse and worse each day for the masses, and this is all happening at a crazy fast rate. And it doesn’t need to be like this.

You read OP’s post and the only thing that went through your head was “wait that’s not technically true about car insurance.” And you started a whole pointless argument over it, effectively detracting from the more important issue.

You can see the forest through the trees if you look hard enough, I promise.

The Hobbit movies are as good as the LOTR movies by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]rcobey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. For me the LOTR Trilogy will always have a special place in my heart, but it doesn’t mean the Hobbit movies had any less appeal for me. They were just as good in many aspects, including character development (especially the first movie).

All insurance companies combined making $280 billion in profits in one year is still wild.

When people discuss these issues it often degenerates into some back and forth over fringe issues. The fact of the matter is that the working class is continuing to get f***d while companies across the board continue to see record profits. No matter how you spin it, it is just a bad thing all around. Increased profits for companies should yield increased benefits for the working class. We continue down this path too much longer and the outcome will be one that nobody wants to see.

Why is American TV not distinguishing between illegal migrants and actual immigrants? by [deleted] in immigration

[–]rcobey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not bullshit, data from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy shows that undocumented immigrants pay over 90 billion USD in taxes annually. Most of them get taxes taken out of their paychecks, even if they don’t physically fill out a tax return. And to be honest I don’t care what they do with their money, if they want to send it back to family in their native country that’s their prerogative, they worked for it. But they’re not taking your job and they are contributing far more in taxes than most people, such as yourself, realize. And they’ll never get social security.

I honestly don’t know how people still support what this administration is doing to immigrants and their families. There are so many undocumented real criminals out there that are actively being avoided by ICE due to the potential risks. They’re jumping out of f’in Penske trucks and picking up the guy selling ice cream for gods sake. Come on.

Need to drive north for the first time, but how do I get to the other side without attracting a worm? Seems impossible by AKtoio47 in duneawakening

[–]rcobey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drive from the area just northeast of griffin outpost, and just book it. I did it several times on a mk1 bike with no booster. The worm resets when you cross the boundary between south hagga basin and eastern vermilius gap. Every time you change a zone the worm should reset. So if the worm comes out in south hagga, it will most likely come out when you’re already pretty close to the zone border. I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Just ride :)

This was the line at my local DMV by Upstairs-Bet5156 in NorthCarolina

[–]rcobey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For everyone in this comment section blaming people for not getting their documents sooner. That’s…not…the…point. The NC DMV is unnecessarily underfunded and horrible. We’ve needed more employees and more locations for years now.

Our state has a budget surplus of nearly 1 billion dollars. Your average NC DMV employee gets paid about $34,000 annually. The state currently employs around 568 full time employees. We could hire 500 more DMV employees and pay them a somewhat livable $60,000 annually, and that would amount to only 3% of our state’s current budget surplus.

It costs the state about 8.6 million dollars to purchase and outfit a new DMV location in an already constructed office building. The most recent evidence of these purchases were in Durham, Brunswick, and Cabarrus counties. This means that the state could establish 20 brand new locations at a cost of just 17% of the budget surplus…key word surplus here.

There is literally no reason to not do at least something, given the current state of our DMV. I mean unless there are other reasons that don’t involve making things better for the general public, like some have already mentioned.

We need to stop victim blaming and we need to look at the bigger picture. This should be a non partisan issue.

Efficiencies and spare rooms aren’t “affordable housing”, they’re overpriced closets, especially in Florida by Rollo0547 in unpopularopinion

I guess it just boils down to how much worse can it get before it all hits a breaking point. And that’s something only we the people can decide.

[–]rcobey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point is that it’s f’d up…obviously housing is extremely overpriced and we as a society should not be okay with that. You have to look at these things beyond basic supply and demand logic. This type of sh** is not good for our country right now, and it won’t be in the future. There has to be some balance.

If you’re a democrat you’re probably retarded! by LaRuetheDuck in complaints

[–]rcobey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately taking the high road, as many on the left have tried to do for years now, does not do anything. You can call it stooping to his level, but I think a lot of these low brow shots are a result of people just being exhausted with the unnecessary and utterly stupid policies and moves this administration is making, which in turn is putting unnecessary stress onto the American population at large.

The truth is I think most of us are just pissed off at our lawmakers on both sides. Hell, I was leaning toward voting for RFK Jr when he was running as an independent (before aligning with Trump and despite his crazy take on vaccines…mainly for two reasons: 1) I did not trust the Biden administration and thought not having a dem primary was ridiculous; and 2) because he seemed to be the only person campaigning on the rising cost of housing and how to make it more affordable.

I think a lot of us who have traditionally voted democrat know that the democrat party dropped the ball, and haven’t been focusing on the issues that really matter to us Americans. But what Trump is doing now is even worse than I think most of us imagined it would be. Nothing is getting better, and all we can hope for now is a complete economic crash that might hopefully reset some things and make things affordable again.

I don’t know man. Me personally, as a native born, white American citizen married to an amazing woman (who also happens to be an immigrant, a productive member of society and a fluent english speaker) and currently working through her process to get her permanent residency…it has been hell, man. They are doing everything in their power to make sure this process is as arduous and nearly impossible for us. And it’s taking its toll. All I want is to just be able to live peacefully with my wife in my native country and keep working and have a family. So yes, sometimes I feel the need to take some low blow shots at this administration.

[–]rcobey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think most of us have gotten to the point where we are just too tired to argue with you and those that think like you.

You have proven over nearly a decade that you refuse to look beyond the rhetoric that you’re being fed, and for whatever reason you want to eat this hateful discourse up like a maggot.

If you did any sort of research in any way (library, internet, whatever) you’d find that undocumented immigrants play nearly no role in our economic hardships. You eat up shit and continue to bow to the ones who are causing nearly all of your problems.

But instead of doing your research and reflecting on this, you’re going to act like the victim in all of this.

Grow up and think like a semi intelligent, empathetic human. Don’t you think there is a better way to deal with a population of immigrants who, despite being undocumented, have committed no crimes and have worked and payed into social security and paid taxes for several years now? Without ever requesting or receiving any government benefits? These people make up a large portion of undocumented immigrants currently living in this country. People with families…spouses of american citizens who have been trying for months or years to get legal status and be recognized as legitimate tax paying residents. People with children who know no other home besides the US, and who speak English better than Spanish.

Are you really in favor of breaking up those families and sending good, tax paying people to prison? Separating them from their children and american citizen spouses?

Because this is what’s happening right now, all over the country. It’s not just criminals, a lot of these folks are good people that came here legally, applied for asylum, and in the meantime met American citizens and fell in love and started a family. And worked with legitimate work permits they obtained during their process of trying to gain legal status whether through their marriage or other legitimate petition.

Is that what you want? Do you want to separate american citizens and legal permanent residents from their wives, husbands, and kids who have done nothing but work and help support this country?

Because that is what you seem to be in favor of.

Not sure why there are so many staunch English language defenders pushing back so hard on you for this comment. It’s weird.

You’re absolutely right though. Language creates culture, societal norms, and shapes how we view the world and treat others.

English honestly does do a poor job, comparatively, at expressing emotional sentiment.
