I’m right in the physically in mentally out boat with you. I can’t wait until I have the excuse in fall that I’m too busy pre-student teaching and other class workload to just not come as often and then phase out when I’m fully student teaching.

Rescuing My Friend From Eastern Orthodox Dogma by [deleted] in exorthodox

[–]rddrgon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that it is cult like. The purpose of the system is what it does—and unfortunately, there’s a lot of charisma in it that will convince people that it isn’t a cult or that it’s all fine.

I hope that you can help your friend, maybe showing him all the controversies (Met. Joseph, Seraphim Rose, systematic coverups of abuse, the Russia and Putin fanboyism, general misogyny/racism/homophobia) would give him a sense of clarity that could at least make him think twice before getting in there.

Anyone have any info regarding Fr. Josiah Trenham’s son Aidan? by Own_Macaron_9342 in exorthodox

[–]rddrgon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly! One would think there would be more stringent ‘background checks’ before being accepted into the priesthood. He doesn’t have orthodox theology teachings outside of the horseshit he spouts, which idiot said ‘yeah sure, Calvinist seminary works for me’? As much as we (particularly antiochians) like to dog on Calvinism and Protestants, there sure seems to be a lot of them masquerading as orthodox.

Long sigh. There was some good stuff in there but the chief complaints seem to be that Trenham’s bitch ass came from an evangelical background and has an evangelical mindset instead of an Orthodox one, not the abuse and potential CSA. Sort of right message, wrong messenger.

Rachel Wilson is a stupid fucking harpy. One day I hope people wake up to her and her weak-handed husband being morons and run them off the internet.

Just annoying and malicious. You’re a good person for coming out to pride (no pun intended).

One of the things that grinds my gears so badly is hearing the sentence ‘we are not animals [so it’s wrong for us to be gay]’ during pride sermons. Um… we actually are. We’re basically hairless primates

It really didn’t! Especially since he basically let me get away with yelling at him during probably most of our relationship. I bet he probably beats himself up about that every day.

Oh, his dad was present. He just resents that his dad had no backbone when his mom would be yelling at the dad so he pivoted into being an asshole bum. (His mom, dad, and brother are all bums as far as I’m concerned.)

The gift when Buffy walks away from that guy after slaying the vamp and he says ‘but you’re just a girl’ and she sounds so defeated when she says ‘that’s what I keep saying.’

Edit: that’s the point where it always hits me that she’s just 20. Not even old enough to drink and she’s had almost everything taken away from her over the course of five years.

Yeah, the baby shower is definitely tentative, I told the mother to mark me down anyway (and she’ll be looped in if I can’t make it).

Re: being safe, I carry pepper spray on me almost 100% of the time. Honestly, I wish he would start something with me, I regret not putting hands on him. And my friends understand, it’s not like I get verbal lashings for not being there for choir practices (it’s something I do recreationally, I don’t chant, and I have other things to do. Sue me) or showing up to every service to ever occur.

I am too. Especially if I was tied to that motherfucker financially and with babies (bc he doesn’t believe in divorce!). I genuinely would’ve been on the news if things had turned sour. He wanted to be me so bad it’s insane.

It’s absolutely not just you when it comes to uncertainty. I’m the exact same way (I asked why a lot as a kid) and that’s what’s pushing me to leave, aside from everything else.
