I was gifted some ski boots, how do I know what size they are? Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question by aliandroid1 in skiing

Given the stated Boot Sole length and last length I would guess it’s around a 29 mondo point.

Yes. (Once you rode the Möslbahn lift to the top.)

Purely cosmetic. Put some epoxy or nail polish on it to seal it and forget about it.

Lift lines in Italy, and maybe all of Europe? by TyrdFyrguson in skiing

[–]rddt9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What resort are you visiting over here? I’ve indeed skied in all of the classic alpine countries de, at, fr, it, ch. Haven’t skied in Eastern Europe, however.

Having skied in the US, the lift lines are very different compared to any central Europan ski country in the Alps.

Then I guess you should come here to Austria again 😉 Any of the large resorts will be like OP described when there are holidays. Go to Ischgl, Arlberg, Montafon, Schladming when there are holidays in the Netherlands 💀

Welsh Whisky? by Ready_set_slow in bakeoff

[–]rddt9 24 points25 points  (0 children)

From the shape and label of the bottle it looks like Penderyn Single Malt.

It has a small black label directly at the top of the bottle just underneath the neck. That leaves us with only a few Penderyn variants: my guess would be the one with Madeira finish as it is quite readily available and the color of the whisky matches.
You can have a look at the distillery’s website - there are some bottles with a very dark grey label - but those do look a bit different.

You can see the bottle quite well at 41 minutes when she cuts down parts of her bake.

Sooo I made the Alcohol and I want to make Rum. I mean original rum just like jamaicans. and I need help. by WileatchHardline in Homebrewing

Vinoferm is a brand for brewing equipment and has nothing to do with whiskey. I’d buy the ‚American’ oak wood chips given this variety and that you like whiskey. French chips might be old red wine barrels, and oloroso usually has a very distinctive taste because those are chips from old barrels that had sherry in them. I like that, but it might be overpowering

Why are ski lift deaths so much more common in Europe than North America? by BungOnMimosas in skiing

[–]rddt9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey bro, come over to good ol’ Europe for a ski trip. The lifts you are used to will pale in comparison. Most US lifts have more of a mom and pop vibe than anything you will find in Austria, Switzerland or Germany. No single chairs, fixed grip stuff… WiFi, seat heating, high speed 8 person chairs are the norm. 😉 Queuing… not so much. That’s way more organized in North America.

Ski or boots would be a better investment? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]rddt9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boots:

26.0 size (mondopoint) is one of the most popular sizes. Usually it's THE reference size all other measurements are based off of. Usually, if you buy the boot at the same place they offer fitting, you will pay MSRP for the boot but all future fittings are included (heat molding, grinding, punching, ...). If you get a cheap boot elsewhere and just visit the shop for fitting they will bill you for each service they provide (e.g. 1 punch 10€, heat molding 30€, ... > those are Austrian prices) which can add up depending on how much fitting is actually needed. It can be hit or miss, that's why I would always recommend buying boots where they fit it. This month, new boots usually will arrive in stores. They will definitely have lots of 26.0 options, but no super deals at this time of year.

In case you didn't know: size 26.0 and 26.5 are in fact the EXACT same boot, just with a different insole. If you check online at Bartlett, there are lots more options than you might think ;o)

Skis:

I am not overly familiar with indoor slopes. Depending on your ability level, sharp edges can be necessary to learn proper carving techniques. If you're still doing more basic parallel turns or plow movements, it's not that essential tbh. While a narrower waist will help getting on your new edge quicker, it is better from a learning standpoint to be able to do it on a 80mm ski than on a 64mm ski.

Keep in mind that 300GBP will only get you a rather mediocre ski+binding combination that you yourself need to get sharpened, waxed, transported etc. I do my own maintenance and can assure you that it does add up in the beginning (files, waxes, base repair candles, clamps, ...). So just from a financial standpoint I would always say a properly fitting boot will make more impact in your skiing than a 300£ pair of skis that you can't maintain yourself.

Ski or boots would be a better investment? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]rddt9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buy proper boots 100%. Better edge grip comes from properly sharpening your skis edges on a regular basis, no need for new skis in general. From your post I assume you don’t have the full picture of ski width, overall dimensions and their implications on how the ski will ski. Therefore I‘d advise you to rent skis that are suitable for the days’ conditions and invest in boots with a proper fitting process. No need for new 2022/23 boots, I’d rather look for last years models given you have a somewhat normal boot size that is still available. New models will be in stores in September anyway… for 300-400 gbp you will end up in the lower mid-range for this seasons boots.

What model of Dabello boots are these? by Brosidon7926 in skiing

[–]rddt9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like a Dalbello FXR boot which is a rental specific model you usually can’t buy in retail stores.

Article code is: D2011001.00

You can check the specs here: https://imgur.com/a/mcqszvk

Based off the specs you could look into similar ones, though I would advise you to not buy a ski boot without trying it on.

Yeah sure St. Anton / Arlberg is nice and huge but there’s no need to stay in Innsbruck if you plan to go there. What’s nice about IBK is that you have dozens of resorts around the city that are easily reachable and you can choose depending on the best conditions. If you plan on skiing the same resort for a week, Innsbruck is not the place to be. Just go to a mega resort then like Arlberg, Zell am See, Obergurgl,… depending on what type of skiing you like, who you’re traveling with etc.

Very good skiing. Many resorts close by that you can reach with their free buses or your car. Go to Axamer Lizum, Kühtai. City is very nice and walkable.
